| Jindar04-28-07, 03:49 PM | The Infinite Layers of the Abyss has always fascinated me in the sense that it is an endless source of villains and evil to use in my campaigns. I have checked the Fc1 and found that there are hundreds of layers and only a slight few are detailed. What about the rest? The purpose of this thread is to invent and describe to us your own made up layer of the abyss. Describe what it is like, what inhabits it, and anything else special about it you think you'd like to add. To start, here's mine: Layer 13408: Scab This layer is a series of collosal platforms big enough to build a city onto floating in a void with a bright green sun overhead. The platforms are giant scabs and are connected to each other with rope bridges. It is inhabited by a type of demon which looks like a floating balor head surrounded by a cyclone of whirling bone who oversee hordes of fiendish undead:tiphat: . |
| Janusunaj04-28-07, 04:20 PM | Layer 8000. Bastion of Satans: 10,000 of the most powerful lawful evil creatures rule this layer, with millions of lesser demons. With 1,000 Senators in control of their own specific ministry. These creatures infiltrated the Abyss millenia ago in an attempt to slowly build up their forces without notice and invade the Abyss. |
| LordMhoram04-28-07, 05:05 PM | Phobius, 1,666th layer. An endless plain of quiet & cold, covered by a plant whose sickly sweet smell gives rise to hallucinations of a person's greatest fears. Ingestion of the plant causes permanent insanity. The demonic inhabitants of this plain cloak themselves in shadow, awaiting visitors to torment and consume. |

This layer is unbelievably hot, just barely tolearble to humans. Leaden skies which rain acid, though fortunately the heat often evaporates the rain before it reaches the ground. Most life is on the mountains, which are a number of degrees cooler; the lower one goes, the hotter it gets, and the deepest canyons are hot enough to melt lead. The air has a sulphrous stink but is breathable. Vast, labyrthine monolothic towers encrust the higest peaks, built in eons past by unknown powers. They are haunted by roving bands of demons and undead, though even they don't know what the dark conceals in these towering fortresses. |
| Mrloki04-28-07, 06:08 PM | 2361 Plain of Blades This is a vast open area where grass once grew, swords, axes and daggers and spears now seemingly grow. The blades are now rusted due to extensive rain and blood. The field has seen more battles then any single plane of existance. |
| Return of the Flumph04-28-07, 07:47 PM | The field has seen more battles then any single plane of existance. *cough* Acheron *cough* Layer 76,594: the Eternal Trenches This layer is made of nothing but deep trenches cut and dug dozens of feet into the muddy ground. Trenches cave in and new ones appear frequently, making the maze impossibly to navigate. The sky is always dark and acrid, and polluted rain falls constantly. The mud walls are full of undead that wait to reach out and grab passerby, pulling them into the quicksand. The maze itself is roamed by various camps of demons, warring for a reason none of them remember. |
| zook1shoe66604-29-07, 12:03 AM | Layer 1,313: Endless pool of melting Care Bears, ruled by an evil *gasp* Black Care Bear. Use your imagination. |
| Paneki04-29-07, 12:30 AM | Layer 1355: Dante's Den Any non-chaotic creature percieves diferent images that makes them rave in madness. At first, they hear voices, see objects move harmlessly and see past painful memories. After some time, the images become reality for a brief time. They see how "accidentaly" they attack themselves, how they blow their heads with spells and such... The whole places is sorrounded by Undead remanants of slain creatures that drain the sanity of adventurers even further. The line between Illusion and reality becomes completely real after someone gets less than 6 WIS. |
| Cthulhu312504-29-07, 10:26 AM | Layer 2971, the layer of arbitrary Melf's acid arrows. Any visitors have 1d3 CL 18th acid arrows targeted at them per round, touch attack bonus +15. |

| M1kh43l_P4r4d1s004-30-07, 12:37 AM | Layer 34,845,9720,826,856,938,827,042: Trasque This layer looks and acts just like the material plane. Creatures that are normally present here can be found here, but with a slightly evil bent. Unfortunatly, this land is filed with 1d% Trasques at any given time. When the Prime Material plane version is destroyed, the largest of the species is teleported here to wreak havoc on the world. |
| Lanoitakude04-30-07, 01:17 AM | I will post a layer I created and used in a campaign I run. Layer 150 (approx): Gintis This smoggy layer has unremarkable terrain. It resembles a red desert with occasional crags. A thick haze permeates the layer, reducing visbility by half. Two powerful entities reside in Gintis: Naer Nin Calibos (which translates to Calibos the Impaler in demonic), a demon lord of exceptional power; and Domiel, a Solar who is attempting to muscle his way into the Abyss. The most important feature of this layer is an artifact of immesurable power known as the Demon Forge. It is the demonic attempt to harness the power of Hellfire. A demon (who was completely mad, of course) created this forge and was then later killed by Naer Nin Calibos. The Forge is fueled by the souls of other demons and evil mortals, it is used to create powerful weapons and other armements of war. Fortunately, the Mad Forger was unable to recreate Hellfire, but the Demon Forge is nonetheless powerful. Naer Nin Calibos gaurds his Forge with paranoid mania, brutally impaling anyone who would attempt to take it or destroy it. Domiel the Solar and his reckless band of angles have a keep-church that they conjured from Celestia, and have been attempting to kill Calibos and destroy the Demon Forge, but with no successs. The raw corrupting power of the Abyss has tainted them, cutting off the ties to their holy power. |
| neilthrun04-30-07, 01:43 AM | Layer 2971, the layer of arbitrary Melf's acid arrows. Any visitors have 1d3 CL 18th acid arrows targeted at them per round, touch attack bonus +15. Ah, I miss read this at first, and gave rise to an interesting idea Layer 2,034 This layer is a comprised of one large grassy savanah, marked with small watering holes. Any creature with an intelegence score of at least 12 gains the ability to cast melf's acid arrow at caster lvl 18, every 1d4+1 rounds as a spell like ability. The layer is inhabited by a seemingly infinite amount of fully advanced half green dragon elephants. |
| bloodpheonix04-30-07, 01:55 AM | layer 1,992 Malshivor An endless desert of sand completely soaked in Blood. It houses 6 suns of various colors that burn out the eyes of any good aligned creature that dare gaze upon them. During the day the entire plane is ravaged by mindless violence wrought by its seemingly endless number of inhabitants but, during the night temperatures drop so low even gods have trouble keeping warm and those who sleep under the moonless sky are visited by "Shivers", incorporeal demons that invade dreams and find the most emotionally crippling thing's that that person could witness and force them to watch them until the sun arises the next day. They have no hope of awakening without the suns burning light. It is said that the demon lord who rules this layer Keal'Jikit knows of all visitors to his realm and has a habit of picking "special" tourists and keeping them alive for eternity, day and night to torture them relentlessly. |
| Ariath Ska'Vhor04-30-07, 04:39 AM | Layer 490: Archinvolk This layer is perhaps one of the most foul of all the layers of the Abyss. It is an endless expanse of nothing but what is devoured by all of demonkind. Demons do not need to eat, but often do, but they lack a digestive system. Achinvolk is where this chewed and half-digested food goes. Miles and miles around in all directions there is nothing but mountains of rotting and half-digested food and corpses. The sky above is just a putrid yellow haze froma combination of methane and other deadly gasses. Many manes, dretches and fiendish devourers roam these lands feasting on the endless rotting carrion (which often just means they maintain the balance of the plane, as where food goes into a dretche's mouth, it reappears in an infinitely random place somwhere else on the same layer). |

You're mistaking me for someone who gives a damn, I already knew about that when I posted this. | Luis_Dragunov04-30-07, 12:56 PM | Layer 1999: The Inexistant Expanses of Paradox This layer is only accessible by a small, abandoned water well in Layer 1998. As you climb down the well, you find the ladder built into its rocky side to end and, as you glance down, you see a black, void expanse filled with tiny silver spheres evenly spaced. In the distance (DC 40 spot, DC30 search) is a small orb, green and blue. You can fly at incredible speeds in this void, taking you only 1d3 days to reach that distant orb. As you get closer and closer, you realize that it's a planet - and you realize it is your planet. The moment this realization hits you, the gravity of the planet starts sucking you in and you are drawn harmlessly through the atmosphere, passing out and waking up in a random location of your material plane. |

Actually, I'm more like, in case you're interested in having a huge collection of layers of the abyss to work with here's another resource. Use it or don't... |
| Nilbog04-30-07, 05:30 PM | Layer 34,911 Pit of Eternal Roaring This layer resembles a normal Material Plane subtropical grassland, complete with flora and fauna. The only difference is that the air is constantly split with the noise of roaring beasts, even when there are no creatures in sight. This sound is extremely unnerving, and all nonevil creatures must make a Will save (DC 20) each hour spent on the layer or be shaken for 1 hour. The layer is inhabited by lions, leopards, bison, rhinoceros, elephants, and wild horses, all with the Fiendish template. True demons are rare on this layer, but a patrol of babau might be encountered. |
| maddog071405-01-07, 03:20 PM | layer 667 Realm of the unforgiven The plane is littered with floating earth bergs that were once kingdoms of various material plane worlds, that when they renounced their gods, if the gods were angry enough, they would cast the entire kingdom into this layer of the abyss, sometimes leaving a crator like hole in the ground. Over time, the kingdoms become occupied with various demons and the survivors over time become planetouched, with a half fiend template. There is no current ruler, though a powerful Molydeus exhiled from the blood wars rules one such dwarven vault, inside a mountain that was cast into the abyss by Moradin when the dwarves renounced Moradin and began to worship a god of elemental evil. This of course is according to legend, don't hold me to it. |

| Dracomortis05-03-07, 07:29 PM | Layer 999: Gravatia Gravatia appears exactly as the Material Plane - for every single point on the Material Plane, there is an identicle and corresponding point on Gravatia. However, there is one major difference: everything on Gravatia is covered in a bright pink, acidic substance that exudes its own gravitational pull known as otherin. Due to the extremely high quantity of otherin, any creature that travels to Gravatia must succeed on a DC 30 Fortitude save or be pulled against the nearest solid surface, utterly unable to move. Regardless of whether the save is successful or not, creatures take 2d6 points of crushing damage each round as the unbearable force strains against their bodies. Nonmagical flight is impossible on Gravatia. Bodies of water on the Material Plane are mirrored by pools of otherin on Gravatia. Creatures attempting to enter these pools must succeed on a DC 40 Swim check to remain on the surface. Failing that, the creature is drawn to the bottom of the pool almost instantaneously and begins taking 20d6 points of crushing damage each round as literally thousands of tons of gravitational force push and pull on their bodies from every imaginable angle. The only known inhabitants of Gravatia are horrible, ooze-like demons called groths. Groths have adapted to the terrible gravitational pull of the otherin and are able to move through it without hinderence. In fact, the groths will sometimes eat otherin when food is scarce, although they far prefer to eat sentient beings. In appearance, a groth looks like a mound of amorphous, purple jelly shaped roughly like a humanoid, although it is devoid of most features. It has no discernible arms, legs, or other appendages and instead moves about by extending a plethora of pseudopods, which it can extend and retract as it wishes. Several attempts have been made to cultivate otherin outside of Gravatia, possibly as a weapon, but all such experiments have ended in failure. For whatever reason, otherin seems to require the environment of Gravatia in order to grow. In fact, it is because Gravatia is, in its natural state, utterly devoid of gravity and it is in such zero-gravity environments that otherin must grow, or it essentially implodes; although otherin has tremendous gravitational strength, it possesses very little outward pressure and collapses under even the slightest outside force, save for that of other clusters of otherin. |
