Is there even a god out there with these Domains? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hi, I've been looking high and low for a deity that has either the Death and Destruction domains, or the Death & War domains, and if not, can I just go with being a Cleric of a cause, and if I go as a cleric of a cause with the war domain, can I pick my own favored weapon?

I'm assuming you're going with Greyhawk deities, so... (opens up the Living Greyhawk deities PDF)

Death and Destruction -- Falazure, Incabulos, Laogzed, Mictlantecuhtli, Yurtrus

Death and War -- Mictlantecuhtli

Odd that the death and war combination is so rare. You'd think they'd go together like peanut butter and jelly.

As for war domain without a deity, one view is that you can pick a martial weapon. A somewhat narrower view is based off of the spiritual weapon spell -- that if you don't worship a deity but have the war domain, you gain a favored weapon based on your alignment:

Chaos: Battleaxe
Evil: Flail
Good: Warhammer
Law: Longsword

If you have two of these alignments (e.g., you are chaotic evil), then you can pick either of them (e.g., light flail or battleaxe). If you are true neutral, then you can pick any of the four.

I was hoping to make the Favored Weapon a Warhammer or Mace, so if I go with a Cleric of a Cause I can go with the Favored Weapon of Good. Thanks Jules!

If you're actually going to be good, then death might not be the right domain for you, since you'll be unable to cast 4 of the domain's 9 spells (death knell, animate dead, create undead, and create greater undead). Death and destruction combined means that you don't have any spell to prepare in your third level domain slot -- animate dead (death) and contagion (destruction) are both [evil], and thus can't be prepared by good clerics. Well, at least you can prepare a lower level domain spell like shatter in your domain slot. At least with death and war, you'll always have something of the right spell level to prepare for your domain slots.

Of course, if you're neutral, you could also wield a warhammer by my proposed rule, since neutral clerics can pick any of the four. Or if your DM doesn't go by the spiritual weapon rules, he could just get a warhammer as his war domain weapon regardless of alignment.

Mictlantecuhtli's favored weapon is a dagger, by the way. Kinda lame.

Well rats, there goes the concept for a Neutral Good Cleric of War & Death. The backstory explained the domains, I know it doesn't exactly scream 'good guy'.

Well, if it's death and war, rather than death and destruction, at least you'll have a solid domain spell to prepare for each slot: spiritual weapon instead of death knell, magic vestment instead of animate dead, blade barrier insted of create undead, and power word stun instead of create greater undead. It'll kinda suck not being able to prepare half of the spells from one of your domains, but you'll be alright overall. It's not like monks and soulknives are going to be laughing about how weak you are.

I'm going to see if my DM is willing to houserule that I can use all the domain spells, assuming I use them with good intent. IE using Death Knell against an innocent would be evil, but my character is Neutral Good with a background to support the Death domain. So I'll cross my fingers and hope the DM is lenient.

I was thinking about this a bit more, and decided rather then ask for a houserule, I'd edit the character's backstory a bit, instead of Death and War, he'll go with War & Destruction as a Cleric of Retribution. Neutral Good, and doing good for people everywhere, and doling out justice where needed. :D

If you aren't limited by Source Books, you could shoot for the Repose Domain. Its in Sandstorm and Spell Compendium, and Complete Divine, IIRC. Osiris (LG) and Anubis (LN) both have it.

It looks like the "good" version of the Death Domain and may even be fed into a backstory of a good character easier, ie Tomb warden, Valkyrie(sp?)-type person.

Hope that helps.
