| Zicka12-31-07, 12:35 PM | Being a DM can I have the PC's inadvertently serve the Lord of the Fith and free him from his Icy prison? One of the PC's is an Ice scorcerer but there is also a barbarian and a cleric... How might I go about doing this, I thought about sending them a Dagger with a note that says to stab the Sage of the Fire temple with it. Other ideas? Anything I should Think about? |
| The Serge712-31-07, 01:13 PM | Given that Asmodeus placed him in the ice, I don't think Levistus can be freed without The Lord of the Nine knowing that an attempt is in progress. I certainly don't think any non-epic (< 21st level) could free the Lord of the Fifth in any event. They could, however, pursue and perform a powerful incantation with the aid of another powerful devil (like a Duke of Hell) or similar entity (like Cyronax). |

Well, Frostfell had a hook where cultists of Levistus discovered created a portal to Stygia and were sacrificing Good-aligned creatures with the Fire subtype (Gold dragons being a favorite) to weaken Levistus's bonds. Perhaps not the greatest story on its own, but one can presumed that if Asmodeus is aware of the attempts, everything may still be occurring as he wills it. |
| faghter_hero12-31-07, 09:25 PM | DMG2 has a magic event that is basically a giant magnifying glass- the Burning Eye of Al Ghautra. If anything has enough power to melt Levistus out of his popsicle, a giant burning eye that starts forest fires might do it. Of course, you'd need a sun to use it, or maybe a Gate to Positive Energy (or someone directing the Eye's fire into a Gate to Stygia from a Material Plane location), not to mention the diamond lens itself, which is split into pieces and guarded by the Church of Pelor. The PCs could be fooled into gathering these pieces for Stygian cultists, maybe even be convinced that it is the only way to destroy Levistus, or work against devils who want to assemble it in Hell themselves. |
| Zicka12-31-07, 09:35 PM | thank you very much everyone, but how might I get the PC's killing fire creatures... |
| Deacon Liadon01-01-08, 11:48 AM | Mysterious stranger in a tavern. But seriously, give them a sponser. A good aligned church or order of paladins perhaps that's secretly run by Levistus. I have a campaign on hiatus at present in which Levistus features as the big bad, though the players don't know this yet. He's slowly manipulating an entire country though it's forces of good to prepare the way for a hellish invasion the likes of which have never been seen. He has an entire order of paladins serving him on the basis that he's their god (they think he's someone else). He controls the College of Magic through his cultists and followers (and much of the thanks for this one goes to the PC's) and he's slowly working on subverting the Government. |
| Habbalah01-02-08, 02:51 AM | I have evil players and I also want them to freeze the lord of the fifth... and there about the right level to try... (and fail..) but there the right level to try. Maybe a epic spell? Help the dark lord flee to the prime materail plane. |
| sciborg301-02-08, 02:16 PM | but one can presumed that if Asmodeus is aware of the attempts, everything may still be occurring as he wills it. He may be aware but I don't like the idea that Asmo can counter act everything and anything in Hell by will alone. He may be in a situation that expending resources to stop Levistus from being freed means expending resources he cannot afford to lose. After all, by most accounts Asmo replaced some other rulers of Hell so ruling Nessus doesn't confer invincibility. |

After all, by most accounts Asmo replaced some other rulers of Hell so ruling Nessus doesn't confer invincibility. Sure. I didn't mean to imply that. What I was suggesting is that one doesn't rule the Hells for as long as Asmo does without being a master manipulator, and the account of the Reckoning indicates that this is the case. So it stands to reason that if Levistus manages to escape -or attempts to- that Asmo is aware of the attempt, and is allowing it to happen for his own reasons. |

| CryoSilver01-03-08, 05:23 PM | Or has been blind sided by a superior being. I like this perspective. Just because Asmodeus is the uber-power of Hell doesn't mean the PCs can't eventually show him up. The gameis about the,, after all, and in theory, they ARE the heroes, and should (with enough power and levels) be able to do whatever they want. |
