I have found stats for the Modrons in the Manual of the Planes Web enhancement and was wondering how to create a Rogue Modron character. I haven't found any 3.5 material regarding Modrons or a 3.5 version of the WE. Can anyone help?

Also, are their any pictures of the different types of Modrons, I have seen the Monodrones (from an older book cover and the WE) and the Quadrones (from Planescape: Torment), but no others.

One last thing, has there been any mention of "Gear Spirits" other than from Planescape: Torment? Are they supposed to be similar to the Moignos in the WE?

I appreciate any and all help regarding these questions. Thanks.

Dragon magazine #354 (the one with the modron on the cover). :)

Yes, Gear Spirits are a form of petitioner in Mechanus. They're mentioned in the Planes of Law box set, and they've got a writeup therein as well IIRC.

What is this Planes of Law box set? Was there one made for 3/3.5 Ed. or is this from 2nd Ed.?

It was a 2e box set that covered Mount Celestia, Arcadia, Mechanus, Acheron, and Baator. Most of the 3.x material on those planes comes from or builds upon it (as it greatly expanded upon the slim bits of detail on the planes from 1e).

So there is no 3/3.5 reference to Spirit Gears?

In name not that I'm aware of (with the exception of FC:I, 3.x WotC books aren't exactly known for the depth of their planar offerings).

You could honestly just use the petitioner template, as gear spirits are just a specific form of petitioner of Mechanus.

go to www.planewalker.com

Chapter 2 of the PSCS has them in 3.5 edition.

If not in name, is there creature that resembles them? They appear to be able to change form (i.e. Nordom's Crossbows and the ocular gear spirit "Optix".

I have not found any reference to "gear spirit" in that chapter. Is it under a different name?

planewalker.com was for modrons 3.5

Gear spirits Might be somewhere else in planeswalker.com

That chapter, specifically, has the rogue modron (I believe PW calls it a modron outcast).

Are there pictures of the different type of modrons in Dragon #354?

There's also the Web Enhancement on the Wizards website for Manual of the Planes. I actually prefer this to what I've heard of the Dragon article (Modrons, to make any sense at all, should be Outsiders, not Constructs).

Making them constructs IIRC was an editorial decision from what I heard (initially seen in Dungeon 144 when the modron therein was added during edits and made a construct). Usually I agree with the Paizo guys on tons of planar things, but in this case I have to distinctly disagree. They're outsiders, not constructs, and they don't make any sense to me as constructs even if they might have some superficial resemblance to them in some ways.

FWIW in my own games I have them as outsiders with a slew of construct immunities.

I should add that I think Inevitables *do* make sense as Constructs, but that's because, from a 3.5 planar perspective, Inevitables aren't the native denizens of Mechanus, they're the emissaries Mechanus constructs to impose its will on the outside world.

they could be outsiders with construct traits. they did similar in the Epic Level Handbook with the Atropal abomination.

I've always loved the quirky little modrons! Do you have a handy link to that web enhancement? Thanks. :)

Is that an old Planescape box?

I'm looking at page 159 of Epic Level Handbook, and the atropal is a large undead and evil outsider. Do you mean the anaxim (page 158) which is a medium-sized construct and lawful outsider?

Heh. :D I'm not sure if anything in the game other than the abominations has two types.

So I guess you could make modrons both outsiders and constructs. I never really though of modrons though as being like golems. They seem more like geometrically perfect life-forms.

theres a template that does, and at least one PrC, im pretty sure does.

i'd make them outsiders with some of the contruct immunities.

Do you recall the names of the template and PrC, and what sources contain them?

Which construct immunities would you give them, and why? I take it that the modron Dragon article didn't give the modrons the immunities already?

i know the template was the Woodling template in the MM3, grants the plant traits among other things.

im sure most of the "transformational" PrCs change all the way into a type. but its possible the Thrall to Zuggtmoy (drag#337) may change to partial plant traits... i dont remember offhand

i would have it be similar to the fortification of the warforged, seeing as they seem to be made of metal in the pictures ;). probably some more immunities but they do have a Constitution score

I'm pretty sure changing your type or gaining some (or all) of the traits of a new type don't actually let you be two creature types.

the Woodling template does not change your type, but grants you the plant traits.
