I have alway feeled the superstitious Christian part of middle-age was a defining point. Everyone prayed and lived in perpetual fear. Religion was very important and church where very powerfull. Thats why i decided the human of my homebrew world would be Monotheist. Some would have "pagan rite" stuff. In other word, some village might have cleric of Kord or Pelor. To make thing interresting, this religion would be more like real world faith. In other words, gods never appear and speak to their follower

This is a very corrupted and oppressive church, whit a large fear of non-human and arcane caster. They sometime burn witch and heretics. Half-breed are sometime persecuted as impure. Its closer to middle-age ideology, i beleive.

The cleric unkowingly draws their power from a different sources. This god is the fusion of a hundred souls. Its very inhuman and barely ever sended an avatar. The last time it did was 2000 years ago.

There are also divergence of Faith, each whit different domain. Just like todays religion, the various cleric does not agrees about which faith is the "real" one. Also, cleric of this deity simple does not bother whit alignement. It is also venerated under many name, referred here as "Aspect".

The Words of Light
Greater Deity

Worshippers: Human
Cleric Alignements: Special
Domains:
-Law

-Pain (Book of Vile Darkness)

Dogma
Follower of this aspect beleive (or are forced to beleive) that eternal life is earned trough servitude. The follower of this Aspect must ALWAYS obey the church or suffer eternal damnation. They are regularly taxed. The dogma also claim that "inferios" must not be trusted. Inferior mean "non-human" and "half-breeds". Arcane caster are seen as demons. The Protector is the most commun and powerfull faith in the Word's of Light.

Clergy and Temple
Cleric of this aspect are two-faced liars. On the exterior they look kind and gentle, but they are mostly power-hungry. Only the most evil, greedy and racist have high rank. Those of low ranks are mostly good-hearthed healer. Some are born in familly whit long history of priesthood. Those cleric always select "Pain" or "Greed" as domains. Those who come from ordinary people select "Healing" or "Protection". Such cleric almost never climb up the ladder. This clergy hierachy is mostly a Theomonarchy.

Temple of the Protector are built whit the tax money. The clergy claim the "material possesion must be donated to create temple."

Dogma
Follower of this aspect beleive that the other Aspect are corrupted and amoral. Follower of the Liberator beleive in equality and freedoms. The also beleive that a true faith is only expressed in the hearth, not in temple. This aspcet is only found i remote area, because the cleric of the Protector declared this faith "heretical".

Clergy and Temple
Cleric of this aspect are mostly peasent whit some sort of enlightment. There is also a large number of druids who respect The Liberator. Cleric of this aspect have no social privilege, unlike to so-called "Protector". A few of them are ascetics. This Aspect has nore Saint then any other, and some of them are not even human.

The Liberator has barely any temple. And the few that exist are mostly small shrine in cave or statue. There are, however, many personnal shrine in followers house.

The divergent faiths and the separate temples really make your "monotheism" into separate religions, which is not what I think you wanted. More helpful would be to keep the Church as one body, but divided by cults of saints/angels who are the Protector, the Liberator, etc..

No the divergent faith reminds me of the division between Catholics and Protestants. You created a very interesting religion which can be exploited in many different ways. The Protector side reminds me of the Catholics at the time of the inquistion who persecuted thousands of people for not accepting their brand of religion. You could have the Protecor side of the religion being secretly empowered by Asmodeus. The Liberator side of the faith is empoweered by a good aligned deity or angel.
