I use a tree format instead of the great wheel. No differences in game effects, just presentation. The tree's body is the outlands, roots are the outer planes in the standard order, the 6 upper branches are the inner planes, with the top the material plane. There are 3 middle branches for Midgard, Muspellheim, and Jotunheim. Midgard is a giant chain of islands, Muspellheim is mildly LE and fire-dominant, Jotunheim is mildly CE and cold-dominant. You can reach the Norse cosmology and the Eberron cosmology via the plane of shadow. I use every deity in Complete Divine. All the planes with exactly one mildly- aligned trait get a lightly aligned trait to the part of the dual aligned plane they're next to which grants a +1 bonus on charisma based checks. Example: on Ysgard, I gave it the lightly-good aligned trait in addition to it's mildly chaotic aligned so good creatures get a +1 on charisma based checks.

i like the idea....but I'd make the trunk the Material, the roots the inner planes and the branches/leaves the outer.

If we could see your reasoning as to why you placed the planes in the position that you did?

My reasoning behind their positions is that the inner planes should still be close to the material, the Outlands are expansive, and the Outer planes are part of the place where alignment energy comes from.

I like the idea but I would love to see a diagram if possible. :)

How do I do that?

Do it in PhotoShop, though this might actually be too much work. :D
Take a pen and a piece of paper and scan it or make a digital photo of it.
Use Paint and draw a crude sketch.
Or make a diagram using ASCII. :D

Then upload the file and post the link here.

Also, I think there would be much more particiation here, if you would actually ask a question.

Thanks. What do you think of the lightly aligned trait? how about connecting to other cosmologies via plane of shadow?

Depends...

Mostly on how much work you wan't to spend for all this. :D
I am compulsive orderly and just realized I work on my setting for more than 3 years now and I think I just have set the basic framework. :D

I started with the, I don't know? 40? Plane-System of Planescape, too, but now reduced it to 3 Core Planes, 4 Inner, 8 Outer and the Astral Plane. Reaching other settings per Shadow sounds nifty at first, but I think it makes the world feel less unique. It doesn't really feel like ones true own world, but just like another small dungeon in an established world, most people will never know of. But it's a question of priorities. If you hust want a couple of villages and a castel to play, it's not worth to create a whole cosmology with gods, mythology, unique creatures and whatever.

I made a small ASCII diagram of your desciption. :D

To me it feels strange to think of the Outer Planes as roots. I think of them more as leaves on branches, the endless planes of imagination and belief. The inner planes support the material plane which supports living beings whose belief forms the Outer Planes....

I like the Idea of the Inner planes being the foundation of everything, so that would be placing them at the bottom, with all other planes "growing" out of them.

Good point, just switch the inner and outer planes.

I wonder if there would be an infinite number of infinite planes for leaves of the Tree? And now if there was a dragon gnawing at the roots, would it be a god of entropy eat the inner (root) planes that are the foundation of existence?
Runepriest

Possibly.

You could make the main branches the outer planes, and the smaller twigs all the demi-planes, that exist in this multiverse. Since a mulitverse is made up of a numer of inifities, there would likely also be an infinite number of demi-planes.
