Mystra dies for 4E.

How do you think this happens?

I'm going with Shar's success with the Shadow Weave.

Well, fromm what I've heard she gets knocked off by Cyric, lemme see if I can find some proof.

Edit: Well it turns out I can't find where I heard it, so take it as you will.

Shouldn't we change the title to "Mystra, RIP...again"

I mean how many times must she die for an edition change?

I don't know what happens to her after the edition change, but her latest death was revealed in Grand History of the Realms.

Agreed. Geez. I wouldn't want that job as a deity. How long does the average Mystra hold her job anyway? Was it the third or fourth Mystra that just bit the bullet?

However, I mostly blame it on a lack or originality on WotC's part. So much for new ideas.

Mystra dies for 4E.

How do you think this happens?

I'm going with Shar's success with the Shadow Weave.

Supposedly Cyric and Shar murdered her - in Dweomerheart, no less. GHotR features that, and more, in their future events "chapter."

You want my opinion? Shar's "success" has nothing to do with it. The designers decided to make some changes in preparation of 4E, and rather than simply a translation of 4e into the FR they decided to give the pantheon, and the setting, in general, a face-lift - or what would a face-lift amount to if you did it with a flamethrower and a chainsaw. Heavens forbid that the new wizardly paraphernalia works with the current Realmsian magical system!

Seriously, it makes no sense, and by any normal stretch of reason it shouldn't have happened. In ten years or a hundred, the Shadow Weave will be much less used than the original one, and CoV shows that Mystra's clergy and allies have begun working to mess up the SW, if not destroy it. Of course, that presumes that Mystra doesn't find a way to deal with the SW itself - and as a personification of the Weave, as well as a divine entity created of Selune and Shar's essence, she should be able to figure out how to shut down an anti-Weave fairly easily. it's almost as absurd as the other infamous deity death (Helm's).

That Mystra would be caught off-guard and killed, on her own plane no less, borders on the absurd. She's been on the warpath with Shar for as long as she knew about the Shadow Weave, and she's got enough clerics/friendly mages/allies to the chance of a surprise attack close to, hmm, zero. She's got the best diviner among the gods as her groupie, she herself is not bad at all (supposedly she created the Seven because she foresaw her death in the ToT couple of centuries before the ToT), and she's got Selune, who is also a deity of divinations, on her side. Heck, as the Weave, she knows every spell Cyric casts, or if he decides to go for the Shadow Wave - which, of course, would be one hell of a tip-off. 4E FRCS will probably have the details.

Agreed. Geez. I wouldn't want that job as a deity. How long does the average Mystra hold her job anyway? Was it the third or fourth Mystra that just bit the bullet?

Third: Mystryl sacrificed herself during the Karsus debacle, Mystra died at the hands of Helm during the Time of Troubles, and that was Midnight/Mystra

Anyway, I'd avoid any games that take place after the entire idiotic affair. If the DM decides to have Mystra killed anyway, I'd either change the DM or find a way to bring her back

Good riddance. Too bad they didn't kill the entire FR pantheon. I like some things about the setting, but others I despise.

Well, good for you, I guess - there will be a lot of cutting and scrapping, so you may like 4E a lot more than I will. However, one way or another, the way they've been handling the fluff part of it in GHotR has been absolutely absurd.

Agreed. Once again business takes precedence over quality.

Helm's gone too?
:headexplo

Why is it never an evil god who gets killed off?

Yeah, there is Takhisis, but at the cost of Paladine's divinity.

There can never be a Good just wins scenario. Only Evil is allowed that.

Okay, seriously, it's probably because killing an evil god lessens the challenge or something along that line.

Not yet, but it's quite likely he won't be around... Although tbh a few evil deities are also being cut as the demihuman pantheons are being rearranged as well, and a few evil deities are being cut from there. Still, I could care less for, say, Selvetarm. I want to that nut Cyric disposed of... ideally by having a certain someone push Stealthwhisper so far up his back the tip probes out from his chest.

Geez, given all the disasters Faerun's been through, I expect nuclear fallout come 5E.Possibly they'll just have a major arc to explain how they'll prevent the apocalypse that's the result of all the other apocalypses like they did in Dominaria in Magic: the Gathering in the Time Spiral arc.

Which is utter bull, considering that the 2 deities would have been no match for her in the first place.

I have no qualms with heaven-shaking events taking place which rewrite the realms, but at least keep them believeable. Good gods slaying each other in a jealous fit...

Does this mean that there will never be another goddess (or god) of magic? Also, is it just me, or does this whole "Spellplague" thing seems to be the "Time of Troubles" revisited, but on a grander scale?

Wait, wut? Doesn't a new one pop up every time?

If no new Mystra is appointed, what is WotC gonna do when 5.0 comes out? (No. I am totally serious here.)

edit:
Oh, is this how they are explaining why the magic system is completely different, and why magic users are going to be even more powerful than before?

I was referring to the Spellplague as being the super-ToT.

Actually, from every bit of info WotC has released, spellcasters are going to be far, far weaker than they were before. I don't know why you think otherwise.

That isn't entirely true. Laduguer and Deep Duerra also got snuffed senselessly as well for 4e.

-Yes, it does explain the hows/whys of why mages work differently in 4e. Chris Perkins said in an interview that in order for the new system to be integrated, the Weave needed to be removed. It is also being used to explain the Spellplague, and about 80% of the other changes going on in the setting.

Who?
