Nothing wrong with worshipping two deities right? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Sometimes there isn't one particular deity that fits a person's exact views. However, he may find parts of two different deities' outlooks and portfolios to be very attractive. Is there anything preventing someone from worshipping two different deities?

As long they are in the same pantheon or the worship of both is in the region where the character grew up I don;t really see a problem

I'm thinking Malar + Sune or Malar + Selune

Truly a unique combination. I'd be fascinated to hear what outlook brings such choices about.

I'm thinking it has to do with the OP needing domains from both of those deities for a build of some kind.

Generally, the two gods are related somehow or at least share a pantheon. Your Selune/Malar faith seems pretty far-fetched, and may be one of those things where your own faith is powering the spells (I doubt one would want to give spells to a worshipper of the other).

From the FRCS, I didn't see anything about Selune and Malar hating each other, even though I may have missed it. Basically, my character values the compassion, friendship, and whimsicalness of Sune. Being a Druid, she also knows the importance of blessings from the goddess of travel, Selune. At the same time, she revels in the thrill of the hunt and the contest of the physical that Malar represents, while not really caring for the evil side of Malar.

In a way, she believes in survival of the fittest, but she's willing to help the weak become stronger instead of going with the culling the weak mentality. The teeters between Neutral Good and just Neutral.

In Forgotten Realms you can worship the Triad - Tyr, Torm, Ilmater.

A NG cleric worshipping Heironeous/Kord sounds interesting. Heironeous and Kord don't always see eye-to-eye, but you just know they pal around togeher at the Celestial Tavern. Pelor is with them too, but tends to  a lot.

I'd love to see Heironous and Kord

1) Arm wrestle
2) Play drinking games

That's because he's planning to kill them (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=846926).

I wonder how long it is before this becomes a banned topic? :D :P

The Selune/Malar combination might show up among some lycanthropes, though typically they're either for one or the other, since the two gods espouse rather different outlooks for the lycanthropes involved. I could see some strange sect showing up which tries to blend both, though.

The problem with your choices is that Malar is horribly evil, while Selune is incredibly good, and Sune is good too. Malar and Selune are direct competitors when it comes lycanthrope as Selune is patron of good were-creatures while Malar is patron of the evil ones. I'm fairly certain they hate each other.

Regardless, if your talking cleric wise I doubt you could get domains from multiple deities unless theres a specific case for it (the Triad example), no way in hell could you be getting spells granted by a good and evil god at the same time.

Note: in forgotten realms clerics can only get their spells from deities, not from their own belief.

This is FR though. It's horribly black-and-white. Malar's probably buddies with the rest of the evil gods, and Selune's on the side of all the good gods, lycanthropy or not.

Oh it's a Druid, so it's more she getsher powers from within herself, but she worships these two different ideas equally.

Not in forgotten realms, in the realms Druids need a god just as much as a cleric does. And I'm not sure you realize how opposed the two are, Malar is vile evil, while Salune is exalted good. Worshiping both seems slightly...insane.

I think the root of the problem may be an incomplete understanding of the deities in question. Selune has travel as a domain, yes, but she is not the deity of travel (that would go to Shaundakul a CN god) she was the first god of good and is still one of the, if not the most, "good" deity of Faerun. She is mostly generic good with a thing for lycanthropes. Malar on the other hand is the embodiment of evil in nature, he not only enjoys the hunt but the terror it brings to those being hunted, which often includes sentients. Its possible to worship him and even get spells from him without being evil (have to be CN, and then your probably an oddity amongst his clergy) but there isn't a snowballs chance in hell of Malar and a good deity favoring the same individual.

Note: It should probably be pointed out that in The Forgotten Realms when you die your primary deity (or pantheon, only actual pantheons, not random deities you choose to worship) take your soul to their planar home. Many people pay lip service to a variety of deities (divine casters don't because of the nature of their power), but still choose one deity or pantheon to venerate above all others because otherwise they get shafted when they die. This is common knowledge and anyone that doesn't venerate one deity or pantheon above all others is viewed as unbalanced.

i will go by this quote i heard once not sure from where if you know i thank you if you tell me
"a man can not have 2 masters. he will hate one and love the other"
so taking it to dieties a cleric, druid or whatever will love one god/goddess and hate the other so i would say no to 2 god/goddess

and don't malar followers make wine using the people they kill blood?
if they do aint that 100% evil and the other goddess will forsake the cleric

It's from the Christian's Bible. In the Gospels, Mathew or Luke I think.

I don't know that much about FR, but can't a Cleric think they are getting spells from one source when they are actually getting them from another? For example, Gnoll Clerics who worship Yeenoghu but actually get spells from Erythnul. So, if this Cleric was worshipping two contradictory Gods, couldn't they actually be getting spells from a third God they are not aware of, but who they fit more?

Picard has a point. It could work that way.

I was going to run a cleric before the DM bailed on me. FR as well, with two gods, no less.

But my choices were Denier and Sune for a cloistered cleric. He was born with red hair and purple eyes, a beautiful face and powerful mind. He may have been dang squishy, but a pretty and poetic cleric works for the god of writing and the god of beauty.

I plan on using him.

Long story short, the further your character from the deitie's alignments, the better an explanation you'd better have.

Malar/Sune and Malar/Selune would probably be a no. But, hey, what about Sune/Selune? That combo seems okay in my book.

That doesn't really apply in FR, though, because each deity doesn't have their own separate religion wherein they are the only god. They know that they are all divine powers, with Ao on top, so in theory, if the two deities don't hate or oppose each other, one could worship two gods.

For example, if you were a pirate, you might worship Garagos (god of battle) and Umberlee (goddess of the ocean).

Serving multiple gods is not unheard of.
But Malar & Selune? It sounds not much better than worshipping both Corellon and Gruumsh.
If you want more ferocious god of nature, Fenmarel seems to be the one.

I don't recall saying that it did apply. If you check my response to the OP, you'll see that I think it is more than possible.

In the book Deities and Demigods, they speak of Dual worship. I don't know about same pantheons, however I would think that your alignment would have to carry qualities of each deity, and you would choose one domain between their domains. Also whenever you would praise your deity, you would try to ensure that you are always giving both deities an equal amount of praise. I like to include them in the same sentence for a praise.

I had dual worshiped once, I played this gnome cleric, he worshiped Garl glitter gold and Apollo (deity with a disruption bow!), I was hoping my DM would allow me to get a disruption bow, just because that is so funny, yet awesome at the same time. Anyway my gnome would always praise Garl and Apollo in the same sentence.

As for why I did this, because I wanted to try something nifty out, mostly because I thought the idea of a disruption bow being awesome, and I too wanted one. I would allow this in my games, as long as the player can show that it is for good reason, not just to get some cool powers, and to prove that they praise both deities and such.
