Hey. I thought the oculus demon in Expedition to the Demonweb Pits would have made a great obyrith due to its flavor. So I remade it at one. Check it out, lemme know what you think. It isn't too different from the original, since I turned its paralyzing gaze into its form of madness.

Alignment: Chaotic Evil

An oculus’ natural weapons, as well as any weapon it holds, is treated as chaotic aligned and evil aligned for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

Eyebolts (Su): As a free action every round, an oculus can project 3 separate beams of pale gray negative energy from any three of the eyes that cover its body. Each ray has a range of 70 feet. On a successful ranged touch attack, an eyebolt deals 2d8 points of negative energy damage.
A creature damaged by an eyebolt must make a DC 25 Fortitude save to avoid the mind numbing fear and nausea the energy inflicts on living souls. On a failed save, the victim’s body becomes wracked with pain and fever-the creature becomes sickened for 1 hour. This can be removed by anything that removes a fear effect.
A creature that is already sickened by an eyebolt becomes panicked for 1d4 rounds if is struck by another eyebolt and fails its save.
A creature that is already panicked by an eyebolt is rendered unconscious for 1d4 hours if it is struck by another eyebolt and fails its save. A DC 20 Heal check or any form of magical healing restores consciousness immediately.
The additional special effects of the eyebolts are mind-affecting necromantic fear effects.

Form of Madness (Su): A creature within 60 feet that observes an oculus must succeed on a DC 18 Will save or be paralyzed as their mind shuts down for 1d4 rounds. A creature that makes its save cannot be affected again by that particular oculus’ form of madness for 24 hours. This is a mind affecting ability that does not affect chaotic evil outsiders. The save DC is Charisma based.

Spell-like Abilities: At will-blindness/deafness (DC 13), detect law, dimension door, dispel magic, greater arcane sight, protection from law, tongues, vampiric touch; 3/day – chaos hammer (DC 15), dispel law, mirror image. Caster level 15th.

All Around Vision (Ex): An oculus’ many eyes allow it to look in any direction and provide a +8 racial bonus on Spot and Search checks. Opponents gain no benefits when flanking an oculus demon.

Negative Energy Affinity (Ex): Any negative energy spell (or spell-like ability) targeted at an oculus heals the demon 1d10 hit points per level of the spell. Non-spell negative energy damage heals the oculus the damage it would normally deal.

Thanks. I wish they would have done them originally as obyriths. I hope they include some (and some loumara) in the MM5....because you can't ever have too many demons.

yeah it seems like some of the book people have must have been a little absent-minded recently, like with the obyriths. but hey, what can you do?

When Wolfgang first did up the oculus in Dungeon magazine (back in issue #129), the idea of the obyrith race was still in its germination stage; Erik Mona had already blazed the trail with the qlippoths in Armies of the Abyss, and when we began working on Fiendish Codex I we took the idea of the demonic precursor race further. The obyriths were the result.

The oculus certainly fits the idea of being an obyrith, but its shape doesn't; obyriths are from a time before the gods and before mortals, and therefore they generally shouldn't have humanoid forms. I see the oculus more as sort of a missing link demon between obyriths and tanar'ri... if I were involved in the development of the oculus demon today, I'd probably leave its stats unchanged and order art that was for an inhuman demon, rather than a humanoid one.

Anyway, them's my thoughts. The oculus certainly COULD have been an obyrith, but it was about 6 months too early to be one.

I figured something like that happened. The curse of working within an ever evolving world of flavor and mechanics is that nothing is ever as perfect as it could be.

I do agree that they have too humanoid forms for the obyrith, I almost thought they were pit fiends before noticing the eyes in EttDWP. On the other hand, Pale Night and Pazuzu (who you guys described as the same sort of 'missing link') also have humanoid-ish forms. So I don't think they work too poorly as obyrith. And they also work well as a missing link. If you did want to change them over to a less humanoid appearance, I would say nothing more than a mass of eyeballs. Perhaps some tentacles, in order to hold their swords.

If you note my obyrith stats for them, the only real differences between the two are the following.

1. Immunity to mind affecting
2. The former gaze attack now harms creatures that are blind, due to being an obyrith form of madness.
3. Damage reduction Lawful.

None of them really are enough to increase the CR, in my estimation, even taken together.

I also improved the negative energy affinity to include non-spell negative energy, such as that from a negative dominant area.

I've seen mention of this creature before, but have yet to know what the heck it is. So what is an obyrith?

A demon created before the dawn of mortals, spontaneously arising from The Abyss. They are also known as the qlippoth (at Green Ronin and Dicefreaks). Pretty much, they were all that it meant to be demon until the tanar'ri showed up. (Who are created from CE mortal souls)

Obyrith = raw abyssal demon
Tanar'ri = CE soul demon
Loumara = dream of vile god demon
