Deities and Demigods is a fairly old book when you look back across 3rd Edition as a whole. I was flipping through the pages of Deities and Demigods the other day when I realized that (in my opinion) many of the deities presented would probably be better served (both mechanically and flavorwise) by having different classes now that there are more classes available.

So, now I'm curious what others think about the subject. With all the new classes that are available, are there some dieties that you would give different classes? If so, what classes would you give them? Would Heironious and Hextor still be fighters or would they have some levels of Knight? Perhaps Vecna would be a Beguiler?

Personnally not only would I switch the classes of quite a few deities, I'd add more levels! Meaning Epic level feats and abilities

I once tried updating a few gods for 3.5 a few weeks ago and here's what I came up with (Greater gods have 100+ levels, intermediate around 70-80, minor 40-50 levels). You'll notice that several gods have PrC for worshipers of these dieties, this reflects not that they worshipt themselves but that they have access to the abilities of these classes.

Although I like the idea of rebuilding the deities classes, I am genuinely unsure how to build something that could still be formidable at whatever high level the party is dealing at.

I'd also assume that the gods had a lot fewer levels than that. With the ELH describing Hecatonchires as 'Pantheon Killers' on value of the 57 CR only (come on, what deity is actually going to be killed by throwing 100 rocks at it?)

I suspect that the weakest deities are something like 15 Levels +1 Divine ranks, and they gain two levels for each divine rank they recieve. An Overdeity would then be a Lv 55/DR 21 at a minimum.

Lastly, I dislike the silly builds of Wizard Cleric or other designs; the Deities might still have to fight adversaries of their caliber (other deities come to mind), so such silly builds would not survive.

I'd suggest that the Pelor (DR 17?) be something like Cleric 39/Radiant Servant of Pelor 10, and that Vecna (DR 10) be a Wizard 31. The odd, non-syngerizing builds seem to be a staple of divine design, but they shouldn't have to be.

I'd want a deity that could hold their own with excellent class level choices. Kord should have Frenzied Bezerker 10 in his build, and Olidimarra might well have the Perfect Wight PrC.
