| Pitiless_Interfector05-30-07, 08:16 PM | I have a question: it says the Astral Plane is timeless with respect to aging, correct? Then how do githyanki grow up?It would seem to me that a society on the Astral Plane would basically do nothing in terms of kids; every time one of them died from violence, they'd knock somebody up then send them packing to the Material for a year, then bring 'em back, pay someone to look over the brat, then pick them up when they were twenty-something. Basically, my beef is this: as written, it is impossible to have a stable society on the Astral Plane. The only reason they don't all starve to death is because their metabolism stops completely; no healing, no aging, no hunger, thirst, poison, disease, etc. If your metabolism's stopped, there isn't really much you can do to maintain a stable society; no procreation, no nothing. Actually, amend that. It's possible to have a stable society on the Astral Plane; it'd just be a society so different from earthly ones that very little of our knowledge of demographics would still apply. |

Actually, if I remeber the old Dungeon magazine correctly, that is something like it works. I believe it goes like this: There are many, many githyanki outposts on many material planes. Many of these are rearing colonies. The parents come onto the plane and lay the egg or eggs The eggs are raised by other 'yanki's, who are assigned to this position, until they hatch and reach maturity. During this time they are trained in the arts the 'yanki's need, depending on whom has been killed recently. Then they are sent on missions on the material plane, led by slightly older veterans. As they near midage, around late twenties or thirties for us, they have a clutch of eggs to be raised on the Primes They then go to the Astral to be accepted into society and start to take part in the Astral warfare and life They most likely will never set foot onto a Prime again, because of the retroactive aging affects. That's how I remeber it, at least. Some of it is probably my own thoughts, but you can tweak it. Also, look for issue 100 of Dungeon magazine, which you can get at the Paizo.com shop. They cover this pretty well, and they also have a pretty good adventure dealing with the 'yanki leader. |
