In my epic game I'm setting up an invasion to Greyhawk from Hell. In my Greyhawk realm they were invaded by "outsiders: from the Far Realm. Long story short - the heros were able to expell them after a long time, but the land got all warped. The "Wizards" stepped in and set up a bunch of "protective towers" and basically took over the protection of the entire world. Now 100 years later, their word is law, and society is very LN.

So it seems like it would be rip for an invasion from Hell. The wizards running everything have become very arrogant, and don't believe anything could harm them again. So what I was looking for was ideas on how this might take place.

I'm thinking it would be Dispater or Meph who would be in charge of the invasion - just wondering how you think this might all go down. Any input or ideas would be appreciated.

An invasion from Hell would ideally be led by the Dark Eight, not the Lords of the Nine. If one feels that one must have a Lord involved, the warlike Bel seems to be the best choice. Paranoid Dispater and icy Mephistopheles aren't likely to take the rash moves of directly invading a Prime World, particularly one with so many active gods and pantheons.

That's if he's not using WotC. If he's using WotC's cosmology, both Dispater and Mephistopheles make as much sense as Bel. Given the tone Mephistopheles exhibits in WotC material, he'd be very much interested in the machinations of a bunch of wizards and would gleefully get involved if he thought his power-base could grow. I would recommend that the wizards actually discover that their towers are failing and a powerful minority make a deal with either Dispater (for greater defense) or Mephistopheles (for greater magic) to reinforce them. Thus, there are some wizards who would try to oppose this new order and create some conflict for the PCs to sift through.

Dispater is as paranoid as ever in WotC. Fawning and making alliances with all Lords. I don't think he'd have the guts to make such a move, especially in WotC's portrayal of him, where it is more fear based paranoia rather than DF's pragmatic and cautious paranoia.

And an outright invasion still doesn't seem to be Meph's style, fire or ice. If you've read Hellfire Mountain (a Dungeon adventure featuring minions of Mephistopheles) Meph is still one to work and corrupt from behind the scenes.

Now, if it is a subtle corruption from within that paves the way for the invasion, I can definitely see Meph or Dispater behind it. However, I'd still champion Furcus of the Dark Eight, who heads the Ministry of Mortal Relations, as the mind behind the madness. And if using WotC's recent retcon of them as Dukes of Avernus, this still then places Bel behind the entire affair. Perhaps the Lord of the First has grown tired of being called a pretender and is displaying the same cunning that he did during the Four-Cross. A bold move designed to silence his detractors once and for all.

PCs might then attempt several scenarios in such a campaign, including trying to free Zariel the former Lord of the First from her prison. Such would greatly weaken Bel, perhaps even deposing him and leaving the First leaderless for sometime.

Ok I like the idea of using Mephistophles to corrupt the wizards and having some of their "defense" towers suddenly "go off the radar - being corrupted." I also like the idea of using a Dark Lord as the 'behind the scenes' in charge guy. Now I also like the idea of the War Like Bel, or one of the Dark Eight being in charge of the physical invasion - perhaps after some of the towers of defense have gone down. Perhaps Meph is manipulating the others into doing his dirty work until he can come in himself, once the place is 'softened' up.

Any other game ideas?

Who says the Iron Duke's not up to an invasion of the material plane? What if he flips out and thinks the wizards are trying to f*** with his head? Some of those guys could be Disciples of all his enemies. And that continent over there? Looks like a staging ground for an invasion of Dis. And that mountain range? It's full of Celestial WMD's in disguise. And that forest full of elves? Those aren't elves, those are tanaari spies on Az's payroll laughing at the Duke behind his back because they think he'll just sit there all day while they put weaknesses in his city WHO'S CRAZY PARANOID NOW? Meph is a good idea, his overview has always ben to usurp power from Asmodeus and ultimately gain control of the Hells. Being the shifty 'devil' (pun) that he is a little corruption / influence upon the right mortals (read some of your displacent wizards.

Here's an idea - often where there are no enemies without (external ones), eventually the power players turn within, complacency may make them susepatable to influence if pushed the right way. Meph is a pretty smart guy, he could devise a way to have an agent do the ground work.

A gate gets open - the Dark Eight general step through with the legions of Hell following behind.

Establishing a beachhead by betraying the wizard/s who open the gate, and through shock and awe tactics. With the base of Operations set up Meph begins a ritual to create a permanent gateway from the Eighth level of Hell to the Prime.

The characters role of course, is once they are aware (somehow) to prevent the initial gate opening, which they should fail and be ridiculed / defamed for by the powers that be.

Then move on to fight the oncoming inferal war, a few wins, a few losses.

Lastly, move in to assault Meph directly and prevent the permanent gate from being established and creating a Hell on Oerth. he he

Meph designing the plan and ultimately establishing direct links to the prime would greatly increase his power and forsee him challenging Asmodeus for Overlordship.

any feedback ?

P.S. Hey Kihon - there is someting very 'fundamental' about your name.

Sorry to nitpick, but I always thought the Dark Eight were more bureaucratic schemers rather than beings who'd lead a frontline charge for the "Hell" (haha) of it.

I think an "invasion from hell", or rather the fear of one, could help precipitate the actual invasion....let me explain. :embarrass

The fear of cultists seeking to consort with devils would likely terrify the populace, making them more likely to surrender control to the LN wizards. At first the wizards might be all to happy to keep rumors about devils invading stealthily to get the populace to toe the line....but then they start having dreams. And real fiends are found not among the cultists, but in the government. The LN beings feel they are losing control and thus exert more control with more force. They build walls against the devils who are supposedly massing in dark forests and seas. They enact laws based on these mad whisperings, laws designed to root out suspect cultists and enforce worship in the forces of order and likely good until the people are afraid, the rulers are afraid, and all those iron walls make it seem like Dis...if only it were hotter...

Baalzephon of the Dark Eight is already worshipped in Greyhawk´s Great Kingdom as Baalzy, where Hextor, the Herald of Hell, is worshipped as state religion. The clery of these two created the animuses, the Fiend Knights of Oerth. You could say the Devils already established a beach-head on Oerth. The Great Kingdom´s ruler Ivid and his line the Naelax on the other hand carry the fiend-sign and are in league with Pazuzu iirc. Demogorgon is said to have created the Death Knights from a fallen Knight of the Great Kingdom, St. Kargoth. So the cold war between Hell and the Abyss is rather hot in the Great Kingdom. In recent times Ivid has gone more and more mad and in Living Greyhawk history the capital of the Great Kingdom, Rauxes, has dissappeared in a magical catastrophy of planar proportions.

Read the Ivid the Undying pdf (http://www.io.com/~wmallman/ivid.html) and the Hell on Oerth ( http://www.canonfire.com/cfhtml/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=453) article on canonfire. 2E´s Guide to Hell does offer some interesting info on Devils and Devil hunting (Cuthbertine) organizations on Oerth. 2E´s Bastion of Faith has detailed info on Hextor´s clergy and their chief antagonists the Heironeans.

Hmm, I probably haven't explained well enough, the idea is actually to have infernal consorts and assistants broach the gap with offerings of whatever motives. The invasion should be an unknown and ennacted as a betrayal to the mortals. Hence wen the hellish legions step through the summoner/s are slaughtered and it's on!

You're probably right about a Dark Eight man not coming through initially, perhaps a senior servitor.

Anyway, the plan was to find a weakness (displacent, perhaps jealous wizard) and exploit it to Meph's advantage for another ultimate aim. The betrayal (by Meph and friends) is just the sweetener . . . . . . . .

Always liked Meph, an ambitious sort who just wants to make more of himself, unfortunately at the expense of whoever happens to be in the way. But you have to admire a man who is big on progression and self improvement. No?

A lot of this is true, but it doesn't change my position that both WotC versions would be responsible and in-charge of an invasion of the likes the OP's stating. WotC Dispater is associated with generals and warriors who are very much defense and strategy-minded and Mephistopheles is very much into intrigue, magic, and has a lust to expand his mortal holdings. Both Lords would be very much interested and involved in such an opportunity if it presented itself. Bel, not so much. His focus, and therefore the Dark Eight's focus, in the Blood War would limit his interest and even resources to such a conflict on the material plane.

I don't disagree with your ideas regarding DF's material, though.

How's this then if I recall, the basic (pun) translation is the fundametal eight methods. This is a term used in the practice of ninjutsu / ninpo. The techniques are said to be the pivotal start and return point of ninjutsu training.

Got a few ideas in this area / lingo.

Look at an invasion from Hell not by who is leading it but who is fighting it.

At first, some weak devils would arrive and corrupt some, kill others, but basically be pre-pre-invasion.
Then stronger devils come as the pre-invasion, weakening the opponents.
hen finally the invasion where the strongest devils and even some Archdevils come through.
What you must decide is A) the devils them selves and B) there tactics. If you have heavily armored steel devils using primarily defensive tactics, then Dispater has his hand is this. If you have ice devils stealing unbinding spells, then Levistus is trying to get free. The lord should match the soldiers.

Ok so let's say that Meph. is the one ultimately behind the invasion. He has taken a personal dislike to the arrogance of the wizards on this particular plane. I was thinking that "pre-pre invasion" would be a "behind the scenes" with devils influencing powerful wizards, and corrupting powerful individuals that would make any counter attack fail. Any thoughts on what types of devils these would be?

Then comes pre-invasion planning - getting an idea of the strengths of the plane. Perhaps Eryines using their female powers to lure males into giving them info? Also some other type of 'spying' devils? Perhaps assassinations devils used at this point as well? Thoughts?

Finally comes an actual invasion force. Something like a massive portal is formed between Hell and this particular prime world - and in comes a marching force of - let's say 10,000 shock troops (what type of devils would these be?). This is to establish a beach head of sorts.

Then the main army - maybe 100,000 devils (10 groups of 10,000 each) led by powerful pit fiends? What the other 10,000 are - thoughts?

Finally the Arch-fiend himself steps through with his million devils (main army) - thoughts on their type? Of course the leaders of this would be pit fiends - and his personal body guard - advanced pit fiends, and he'd be riding on his dragon (ancient red wrym - highly magical).

How's that sound? Can anyone help me fill in the questions asked in this post? Also - would that be accurate, or do you see it another way?

Falxugons (harvester devils), erinyes, brachina (pleasure devils) and remmanon devils form the best for this sort of thing. Imps and spinagons could work as well.

The dogai (assassin devil), osyluth and gelugon (ice devil) all can work for this, as well as the ones mentioned above. Keep in mind that erinyes are more warrior women than the brachina, which are better equipped to use 'female powers'

I've detailed my thoughts on the armies of Hell in Dicefreaks' publication The Gates of Hell (http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gth669h/TGoH/). Even if you aren't using the exact numbers or DF archfiend stats, Chapter 6 can provide you with useful information regarding troop breakdown, goals and such.

I would suggest a couple Dukes precede Mephistopheles himself, each with their own impressive contingents of troops. Duke Hutijin has stats of some sort in both the Tome of Horrors by Necromancer Games and in the online Dragon magazine articles.

So how many people does "Greyhawk" have total?
The Earth now has about 6 billion, and I can't see Greyhawk having anywhere near that - too many monsters out there killing the humans and all.

Regardless - you have Hell invading it, or to be specific one plane of Hell looking to invade it. I do have a whole plot line that spells out why Meph. wants to invade, but that's besides the point.

Using the info from Dicefreaks write up - there are "Trillions" of devils which could be sent, but then I'm sure one of the other "Lords of the Nine" would see something going on. So if Meph wants to invade 'Greyhawk' - but wants it to remain off the radar, how many devils does he send with his main invasion force?

Yes I've come up with some numbers for the pre, pre-invasion forces, etc... but when it comes to the actual - here comes the massive army (once the 'stable' gate is formed) - how many could Meph. send without the others getting wind of it? Thoughts?

Without any devil, including Baalzebul who is master of intrigue, or Bel who is the superior of Duke Corin of the Dark Eight (and thus minister of espionage) knowing about it? Probably a tiny invasion force of around a hundred.

Without exposing himself to counterattack and overthrow? Probably a couple million. If I was doing it, I would decide if I wanted the invasion to succeed or to fail, and send the appropriate amount.

I don't know how many people Oerth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oerth) has, but I would guess that 1 billion is a fair number. However, keep in mind that a single pit fiend can slay millions of 1st level commoners and even probably thousands of mid (6-11th) level adventurers without ever being threatened due to regen, high damage reduction and armor class, plus at will fireballs.

Meph is pretty cautious - being that he's been around for nearly forever. He would never expose himself to 'counter attack' or a possible 'over throw' - so lets say he's going to send 1 duke and 500,000 devils into the Greyhawk world - that has about 1 billion people (most of which are low level). With that type of invasion force - assuming that they are dominating and charming monsters as they go - could they expect to succeed? Other then "devil" worshipping groups, any other major groups willing help them?

Yes Greyhawk has some epic people - but the duke and a few advanced pit fiends would take them on. Just wondering what you all thought of the chances of success?

It sounds to me Greyhawk has little to no chance but for a few epic characters to kill or banish the duke and take on the upper devils. Greyhawk stands no chance in army vs. army terms.

A force of 500,000 devils, led by a Duke of Hell. Just so we're clear, this isn't 'under the radar' by any stretch of the imagination. This is a massive direct invasion, the likes of which has never been seen, even in Myth Draenor. For comparison, keep in mind that the entire U.S. Army, reserves and national guard included, numbers less than 500,000. Wikipedia on troop numbers of Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_active_tr oops)

So let's break this down. A force of 500,000 pit fiends would run roughshod over our world of 6 billion, let alone this world of 1 billion. A force of 500,000 barbazu would be very lethal, and could probably conquer nations, but not stand forever nor hold territory. What we have is something in between those two extremes.

Only erinyes are going to be capable of charming monsters, so I'd assume any monster with a Will save of +10 or less stands fair game of being charmed.

Devils sometime use mercenary yugoloths troops, you may or may not wish to add this complication in.

I think it stands a very good chance of crushing the world.

After reading the lengthy (and highly informative) dicefreaks write up on Hell- I found that the numbers of devils are amazing, as is their plotting, backstabbing, intelligence gathering, planning, etc... So if Meph. wanted to take out Greyhawk (due to a personal snub), and had already inflitrated his pre-(preinvasion force) in high places around the lands, a few cults here and there, and then set up a "stable portal" from Hell to Oerth. At that point I would have others in Hell get wind of his portal and plans.

But Meph. wants to ruin/destroy most/all of Greyhawk - enslaving millions - and dragging hundreds of millions of souls to hell (all increasing his power) - but not enough by itself to challenge or change anything permanently in hell, otherwise they might unite against him.

So he sends in roughly 500,000 total devils + 1 duke to lead them and take care of any epic level characters that Greyhawk can bring to bear against him. Think 1 duke, several advanced pit-fiends, maybe a couple of thousand pit fiends at best, 10,000 eryines, 50,000 Ice Devils (it is Meph) after all, and the rest would be 'lower rank' devils. Yes a significant force - but not the trillions that are engaged in the BloodWar, or even enough of Meph's personal forces that could threaten him. What's the result of that?
Witch

01-04-08, 04:12 PM
This is tremendously powerful. I'd recommend using more lemures or barbazu, and reduce any devils above that to a few thousands. Cornugons and pit fiends to a few hundreds. The invasion force will still be incredible, but not as overdone, in my opinion.

Hmm. At some point, you'll want to be deciding what your epic party is going to actually face. Everything else is just background...there's no fundamental in-game difference to a trillion or a thousand lemures.

I'm thinking around 20 unique devils, not unique as in their own form, but in the sense that they may have class levels and such. Various base devils could be used here, from the lowly barbazu all the way up to a pit fiend. The important thing here is to give them enough levels to make them effective challenges for the PCs. Don't waste time with a barbazu fighter 5....he'll die just as quick as a regular barbazu against epic level characters.

Then, I'd figure a couple hundred 'advanced devils', which would be just base line HD advanced fiends. These elite troops would be leaders and generals, but also serve to actually be more than mere speed bumps to the PCs. The reason you'd have a couple hundred is not to put the PCs against every one of them, but to spread them out so they are likely to be encountered regardless of where the PCs are.

After that, you've got 499,700 devils to play around with. I'd say 1 in 1000 devils are pit fiends, 1 in 500 are gelugons, 1 in 250 are cornugons (assuming those are the three most powerful devil types you use...you get the picture) and so on until you get done with your army. Any remaining devils, name them lemures and move out.
EaterOfTheDead

The number of troops does not seem to account for mortal conspirators. Any army will draft a large number of foot soldiers from the existing populace. The demon cults from the initial stages should form the rank and file of the army. The duke then needs a significantly smaller amount of devils for the invasion to be successful.

This logic also will cut down a lot of those 1 billion citizens of Oerth that need to be defeated. A lot of them will have joined up willingly.

Of course, this assumes that the devils want to rule Oerth and not perform a bit of mass genocide and take the planet for themselves. Of course they could still draft the mortals into the army, defeat the resistance and then capture and slaughter the adherents.

Just some thoughts.

Good Question...

What would Meph ultimately do with a plane? Suck it dry of magic to fuel his own power? Turn it into a tortured section of the universe he rules? Pull the whole world or Oerth into his unlimited plane? Thoughts on what Meph would do if/once he conquers the world?

Suck it dry of magic, channel it into an epic spell designed at imprisoning Asmodeus and take the Serpent's Throne for himself.
