Is the Plane of Shadow considered a place of evil or is it just a plane that has no light of any kind? I read up on it, and I can't find anything that specifically says if the plane is one of evil or not. I would think it would be an evil plane, because I havn't found a creature that resides or is connected to the plane that isn't evil.

OK here are my 2 cuprum pieces

First of all Light =/= good and dark =/= evil
The plane of shadow is a mirror image of our world but more psychologically stressfull for the characters, because is a place that is not known

maybe most of the inhabitants might be evil... but there are the "shadows" oof the good ppl in the material plane, but more... complicated
so maybe the plane might have evil monsters but the plane of shadow can be as good or evil as your DM wants it to be

hope it helped n_n

In my opinion, not so much "evil" as vaguely sinister...sort of dark and gothic. It can't be denied, thought, that creatures of evil do seem to be attracted to it, and that certain regions (darklands) are quite malicious in nature.

Officially, it's mildly-neutral aligned.

What about in like say....Forgotten Realms where Shar, the Shadow Weave and the Shades live. It seems to be evil, especially in the Realms, which is where we will be playing.

An easy way to tell is to look at the planar traits. If it says the plane is mildly or strongly evil-aligned, then it's a plane of evil.

In the case of the Plane of Shadow, it's listed as "mildly neutral-aligned." That means it's not a plane of evil, for sure.

No, not in the Forgotten Realms, either. One or two deities aren't enough to taint an entire plane, or the Material Plane (where Gargauth, for example, lives) would be evil.

I would think it would be an evil plane, because I havn't found a creature that resides or is connected to the plane that isn't evil.

There are a number of non-evil creatures there, actually. The khayal genies are usually chaotic neutral, dusk beasts and ecalypses are both "usually neutral," gloamings can be of any alignment, shadowswyfts are any chaotic, dark creepers and stalkers are usually chaotic neutral, shadow asps are always neutral, shadow spiders are always neutral, dark creatures are "rarely good," illumians can be any alignment, beacon moths are neutral, and I could go on.

The problem is that monsters in general are more often evil than good, so that PCs can kill them with impunity. So there are a lot of evil things on the Plane of Shadow, just like there are a lot of evil things on the Material Plane.

Alright, fair enough. Thanks everyone for the input.

I agree with what Rip said before, but I'll two minor points:

I'll point out that the Shadow Weave doesn't exist on the Plane of Shadow. Magic there operates independant of either Mystra of Shar, both of who only have power over the Weave and Shadow Weave respectively on Toril itself. Both weaves are specific to that planet and potentially the other planets around Toril's star but nowhere else on the prime or in any other planes.

Shar being on the plane of Shadow is a 3e retcon, where she'd previously had her divine domain in the Gray Waste. If you don't use the 3e FR cosmology, the plane of shadow has nothing much to do with her, and even if you do use it, her influence over the plane isn't monolithic. Even in the 3e FR cosmology, Shar only has a discrete domain there (so does Mask), and the Plane of Shadow as a whole has the same traits as it would prior to the retcons (they go out of their way to state this in Faiths & Pantheons) so the plane itself is neutral.

Let me add that shades aren't always evil. They're "always nongood," but they can be neutral.

Also, I seem to recall reading somewhere that the Plane of Shadows is also a connecting point between realities; traveling through the Plane of Shadows can allow one to enter other realities (such as going from Greyhawk to Faerun). I'm not sure which book I read it in, though it's either the DMG or the Player's Guide to Faerun...I'm just not sure which. So I'd say that implies some level of neutrality, at that.

This is right, it's like the Astral or Ethreal plane, it is connected to all the prime worlds.
