plane shift [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-26-07, 05:31 PM im trying to create a table for consequences if plane shift fails

ex: like getting teleported to a random location on the plane your in or getting sent to a different plane , getting damage dealt or picking up traits of features form your friends or enemies.

any ideas ???

07-26-07, 06:31 PM There are random planar tables in Manual of the Planes and Spell Compendium (and maybe even the DMG, I can't recall). But what types of error are you anticipating with Plane Shift? After all, it ain't teleport, and it's not all that accurate to begin with.

07-26-07, 07:32 PM anythings good, im thinking if it can teleport you to a new dimension basically it should have a some really bad consequences like a plane shift on the abyss a possibility of getting infused with a demonic aura or weaknesses ,or in the beast lands gaining plant traits , or turning into a magical beast or just taking damage ect...

07-26-07, 09:51 PM Random consequences for the caster, or the target? Don't forget to clarify this -- many people forget that you don't have to Plane Shift yourself when you cast the spell (making it a great save-or-die, but that's offtopic).

07-27-07, 04:43 PM I would think if the spell went wrong, it would go wrong in a similar way for whoever is involved. If the caster targets himself, and it goes bad, the consquences shouldn't be any worse (or better) than if he targets someone else, and it goes bad.

Also, as noted above, Plane Shift isn't all that accurate anyway; IIRC, it puts the target down up to 500 miles from the target destination. That alone could be dangerous enough; if the destination was the coast, the target of the spell could end up 500 miles out to sea, or on another continent altogether.

The destination could end up causing the damage, rather than the failure of the spell.

If the spell does fail for some reason, I would think being on a different plane than intended could be punishment enough. Tried for Bytopia and hit Carceri instead? Whoops...
