I have never understood exactly what the planes were, so needless to say i have some questions about them. Are they different dimensions or just places, how do you travel between them without teleport spells, and what is the name of the plain that our characters live in? All help appritiated

Most campaigns take place on the prime material plane, which is without getting into anything complex, like our own universe, full of stars and planets in orbit around them. Toril the planet for the Forgotten Realms setting, Oerth for the Greyhawk setting, Krynn for Dragonlance, Athas for Darksun, etc are various planets within the prime material plane, alongside an innumerable number of other worlds.

The planes are effectively different dimensions that personify the physical elements (the Elemental Planes and Energy Planes), that personify raw thought (the Astral), that personify raw probability (ethereal), that exist as a warped reflection of the prime material (shadow plane), and that personify the alignments of Good/Evil/Law/Chaos/Neutrality (the Outer Planes).

Planeshift and Gate spells, as well as naturally occuring portals are ways to travel between the various planes.

This assumes that you're using the standard D&D cosmology (aka the Great Wheel cosmology). Your own home campaign might or might not use that cosmology, and might use something different or have its planar structure undefined, plus some people might use a modified or different cosmology for their own FR or Dragonlance campaigns.
