| crimsonwolf03-14-07, 01:23 AM | what exactly would Io rank on the greater deitys power scale? |
| Kain Darkwind03-14-07, 02:15 AM | I've always thought sort of like this: Io Colossal+ Dragon (Extraplanar) Hit Dice: 81d12 + 1792 (2754 hp) Initiative: +0 Speed: 100 ft., burrow 50 ft., fly (perfect) 450 ft., swim 100 ft. Cosmic Entity: Io is entitled to rank checks against deities and other cosmic entities. Io has a +20 to rank checks. Cosmic entities are not subject to the +4 strata differential. Draconian Lore: Io knows all nonepic spells in existence. He benefits from a +9 bonus to the DCs of his spells. Io may make special untrained knowledge checks for subjects he does not have ranks in, with a +60 bonus on the check. Io may craft epic magical items and artifacts as if he had the prerequisite feats. Regeneration (Ex): It is unknown if any type of damage deals lethal damage to Io. Presumably a specifically designed epic spell cast upon him after his nonlethal damage exceeds his hit points by 100 points could prevent him from regenerating the damage. Specific major artifacts may also be capable of dealing Io lethal damage. Possessions: Io typically carries nothing on his person, but should he need a particular magic item, he can procure any magic item, epic magic item, or minor artifact within the space of an hour. Io also possesses countless major artifacts. |
| Shemeska the Marauder03-14-07, 02:53 AM | Either near the high end of Greater Deity, or an overpower of the Draconic Pantheon. I'm in favor of the second actually based on Io's history. Io is something transcendant beyond the deities of his pantheon. |
| ripvanwormer03-14-07, 12:44 PM | I'd say 19, actually, the same as Corellon Larethian and other racial creator gods. The dragons think he's a bigger deal than he actually is. |
| CantripN03-14-07, 12:54 PM | Over 9000! |
| danzibr03-14-07, 01:09 PM | CantripN, what's the scouter say about his power level? Over 9000! What, 9000!? Dan |
| awaken_D_M_golem03-14-07, 04:26 PM | ... racial ... The dragons think he's a bigger deal than he actually is. Gee , ripVW , that's kinda humanoid-o-centric of you , and not very multi-specie-al either. heh. Wasn't IO somewhat of an Overdeity in 2nd Edition ? Kinda like Asmo , and Jaziran ? And don't the Rakshasa say his special Magic resistance came from their big wig ... shacking up with a Really Advanced version of the Lizard that spooks all Dragons ?! |
| ripvanwormer03-14-07, 06:19 PM | that's kinda humanoid-o-centric of you It isn't humanoid-centric to avoid putting dragons on a pedestal above all other species. I think you're being kind of dracocentric. Wasn't IO somewhat of an Overdeity in 2nd Edition No. He wasn't credited with doing anything that Moradin, Ra, Izanagi, and Annam weren't also credited with. inda like Asmo , and Jaziran ? They weren't overdeities either. And don't the Rakshasa say his special Magic resistance came from their big wig ... shacking up with a Really Advanced version of the Lizard that spooks all Dragons ?! Sure, why not? |
| awaken_D_M_golem03-14-07, 07:43 PM | I think you're being kind of dracocentric. Frustrated Post-Modernist says " How do you know what my intent is ?! " { ... insert mock-horror smiley ... } Thanks for casting EpicSpell+SDA : Jog the Faulty Memory , ripVW. and it's 5/8'ths Rakshasa , 3/8'ths R.A.L.D. those were the days of chaos. |
| Gray Richardson03-14-07, 08:27 PM | I would agree with Rip that Io is probably up there around 19. He should be comparable to Corellon and Moradin and Annam. Io is probably trying to ascend to overdeity staus. I infer that there are several paths to overdivine ascension. One path would appear to be gathering enough divine power to create a universe or crystal sphere. Other paths might include destroying a universe or crystal sphere (we know of at least one shattered sphere) or possibly slaying an overdivine entity. The many racial gods seem to be pursuing a path that involves spreading their chosen race across the multiverse, helping those races to settle and proliferate in new crystal spheres. We might surmise that there is a critical mass (of population? Biomass? Petitioners? Prayers or belief?) that once reached may allow the racial god to ascend. It is speculated that humanity has exceeded that critical mass allowing the racial god of humans to have ascended to overdeity status. Whether this happened so far in the past that his name is forgotten, or whether the knowledge of him and his name have vanished from racial memory with his ascension (not uncommon for overgods) we can only theorize. Io is known for being an absentee father. Not unlike the cukoo that lays its eggs in other bird's nests, he tends to establish dragons in a new crystal sphere and then moves on to the next one. He seems to be a little more serious than some other racial gods about spreading his seed across the multiverse. He doesn't tarry long with each new brood, much less stay to watch over them. Unlike Moradin and Corellon or even Gruumsh, Io does not seem to evince any filial affection for his children. Perhaps his draconic brain views such considerations differently from humanoid deities. It is in a dragon's nature to be self-centered and obsessive in their pursuits. Or could there be some deeper more intriguing mystery for Io's speed and drive in propagating his race? Why such urgency? Perhaps Io is getting near to accomplishing his overascension. Or maybe he is impatient. Or maybe he has a pressing need to complete his task swiftly, motivated by fear of an enemy, or contemplating the imminent reward of ascension, or needs to ascend quickly in order to avert a catastrophe or other threat to his race. Some people believe that Io has already achieved his ascension. There appears to be some confusion about the matter. Even some fans on the boards espouse his overdivinity. Perhaps that is an intentional ploy to aid Io in his ascension. It is likely that Io boosters are spreading the rumor that he has already ascended in order to further such belief. For beliefs have power in the outer planes. In the outer planes, belief shapes reality and what is believed becomes true. :dragon: |
| sciborg203-14-07, 08:27 PM | No. He wasn't credited with doing anything that Moradin, Ra, Izanagi, and Annam weren't also credited with. Whoah! Manling, Io is the Ninefold Dragon, whose very blood shed in the true Void created the Shadow Void where the other creators could exercise themselves. Io is the potential of the multiverse....if you believe what the dragons apparently do as per Monster Mythology, the greatest god book (though On Hallowed Ground is a close second) ps. Since I'm a cocky mother-- *WATCH YO MOUTH* -- and its taking up memory on the HD, I might as well post this, kinda relevant: Ionian Mysteries How do dragons come to realize the ultimate nature of the dragon Io? Those who join move more and more towards neutrality. It is important to realize that in their majesty, the humility of submission does not come easily. Io does not begrudge his children for this, as he created them to have no need of priests. Still, as the multiverse begins to move to a new age, one which the place of dragons seems more and more uncertain, many dragons feel lost and isolated despite their incredible powers. The draconian gods who more actively work in the planes are all lesser powers, save for the fairie dragon lord who has grown apart from his brethren. In fact, while the goals of these dragon gods are far reaching, they do not speak to the draconic need for a superior power that reflects their own superiority over the biped races. This void in dragon spirituality has led elder dragons and their younger proteges to look to their ancient heritage and the Void that Io brought the potential of existence to through the shedding of his own blood. Similarly, the leaders of the mystery teach, Io will fill the emptiness in their hearts. The faith is appealing because it places dragons as the highest creations of the multiverse, and suggests a greater destiny in which their kind will once again be given the chance to be its kings and queens. Most of those who seek to join are draconic elders who have begun to question their place in the multiversal tapestry. As the mental, physical, and magical nature of these pseudo-reptiles can be quite different from the shorter lived biped races, their religious ideology varies as well. The Ionian Mysteries are based on rituals and reenactments, similar to other mystery religions, but the rituals and length of initiation can go on for a century or more. Good and Evil dragons take longer, as they must go against their indoctrinated alignment and move towards true neutrality. The first part is being accepted into the cult. This requires that the dragon refrain from its natural tendencies, proving its discipline. This trial period is done under a low level acolyte. After a few years, any dragon that has shown reasonable effort is allowed to take the first initiation. The goal of this trial is not to completely change one's personality, but to prove that one is willing to do so. At this point, the initiate is allowed to eat a meal that celebrates their passing of this first test, as well as prepare them for the next one. During the feast, in which other dragons take part, the highest ranking acolyte will relate the story of Io's creation of the universe, how he made the Void, which was bereft of potential, into the Shadow Void, a nothingness from which something could arise. After the meal has been completed, the dragon is taken to a cavern deep within a sacred mountain. (This mountain is considered the property of the cult, and tresspassers are warned simply to turn back as they approach. Any who continue to move toward the mountain are attacked, though they are rarely killed as that would only draw more attention to the holy site.) The cavern is deeper that the base of the mountain, actually within what some would call the Underdark. The dragon is forced into a small, cramped space, then sealed within with boulders and the combined magic of those gathered. The symbolic meaning of the cavern is a representation of the Void, the emptiness in which only Io existed. The cavern is warded against any attempt to escape, and only a dragon with the power of an archmage or two could have any hope of doing so. The length of time any dragon must stay within the cave varies, though by the time they are let out the dragons are definitely close to starvation and desperate for freedom. The acolytes are not just testing the dragon, however, they are also waiting for a highpriest to arrive. This can take several months, as the dragon in question may not even be on the same plane. Once this dragon does come to the mountain, he draws out some of his own blood, pouring it into a natural or carved out basin near the peak. The bottom of the basin always has the Nine-Fold Dragon's symbol scratched into it. In the following days, various spells of purification and conscecration are cast on the liquid, as the dragons offer prayers to their elusive power. The ritual culminates with an atonement spell cast upon the blood. The reason for this is that having passed through the initiations, the highpriest's blood is closest in nature to Io's, yet not truly holy. At this point, the blood is taken in the mouth of the acolyte who watched over the initiate during his trial of entry, and cannot be swallowed or spilled. As all dragons are Io's masterpiece, there cannot be a more holy receptacle so nothing else is appropriate. In a tunnel directly above the initiate's prison, the blood is poured through a slight crack to the dragon below. At this moment, the blood that belonged to the Highpriest is thought to become the blood of Io, a memory of those first drops that created the Shadow Void from the True Void, and allowed the powers of other races to fashion the multiverse. The prisoner, assuredly ravenous, drinks as much of the blood as possible on instinct, as it has been reduced to the animal state of its reptilian heritage. The moment the chamber is opened, acolytes wait to see if the dragon attacks or is too weakened to move. Regardless of its state, every dragon there including the highpriest casts a spell of blindness designed to over come the natural spell resistance of their race. If necessary, the dragon is wounded to bring it into submission. At this point, the intiate is forced to crawl through the tunnels, even if it takes days, eventually arriving at the top of the mountain. In the cool mountain air, the dragon's sight is restored gradually, coinciding the birth of the present multiverse from the Shadow Void with the dragon's rebirth as a disciple in the Ionian Mysteries. From this point forward, the dragon has entered into a new life. Of course, the initiation does not end here, but further tests vary to an astounding degree depending on the dragon herself as well as the nature of her overseers, who themselves are undergoing the intiation process and still not purified of alignment and bias. More serious tests involve flying or swimming through a dangerous environment unprotected, stunning the dragon's wings in midflight, or being subjected to the breath weapons of her fellows all at once. Many of the trials involve humliation, as the dragon must come to fully accept its submission to the will of her creator. Other trials prevent the dragon from using any magic or ability save the spells granted to her as a cleric of Io, meant for her to come to trust the Nine-fold dragon. As dragons have centuries in which to learn the path, there is less of a sense of urgency and instead the initiation is seen as a continuous process. While many biped initations seek to create a psychological break that produces understanding, the dragons combine such trials with more ongoing ones that serve to refine the initiate. This allows the dragon much room for growth and for failure, and many of the cults secret revelations come to her over time, until they seem to have been ever-apparent. It's said that by understanding that all dragons are linked by the essence of their great creator, higher initiates can use abilities and even breath weapons of other species. Those who realize that all the planes are merely a vehicle of Io's great majesty may even be able to fly across the multiverse at will. What one can state definitively is that known members grow disinterested in their hoards, and begin to spend more time wandering the true neutral Hinterlands to seek communion with their god. These dragons are suprisingly approachable, though most conversation focuses on the greatness of Io without any real revelations of the groups desires. Such meetings are exceedingly rare unfortunately, as the cult is not a large one even by the standards of dragonkind's relatively low plane-wide population. The faith meets rarely, and much ongoing business is in fact conducted during a new wyrm's initiation. What little information that has been gathered suggests that members seek to promote cooperation among dragonkind, stressing that inclinications to Good and Evil, and even to Law and Chaos, prevent the mind from being impartial enough to direct creation to serve Io's will. What ultimate goal those enlightened in these mysteries wish to steer the multiverse toward, however, is unknown. |
| Kaldar_the_Summoner03-14-07, 09:07 PM | Over 9000! WHAT?!! 9000???!!! |
| Taeldrin Laesrash03-14-07, 10:39 PM | Io is probably trying to ascend to overdeity staus. I infer that there are several paths to overdivine ascension. One path would appear to be gathering enough divine power to create a universe or crystal sphere. Other paths might include destroying a universe or crystal sphere (we know of at least one shattered sphere) or possibly slaying an overdivine entity. I like this idea. It'd make a great campaign, especially Spelljammer, to find a new crystal sphere completely populated by thousands of dragons, possibly some refugees from enroaching humanoids and their gods. Maybe Io could be their god-king, or an avatar of it could be. Another idea would be if they spread from a point from known space to overwhelm other nearby planets, like Edill in Greyspace. I personally believe that Io is very close to overgodlieness, and given that it's older than the humanoid creator races, I'd put it at DvR 20. |
| crimsonwolf03-15-07, 02:40 AM | as for the part delaing with how he treats his dragons now adays .. its becuse he didnt creat them .. *accroding to races of dragon and dracomica* he created one dragon of such great beuaty yet was slow so taking the idea he created twins tiamat and umm behamut? due to there natural riviral between twins for there fathers attention and unable to beat bahumet in valor like ways timat skeemed and killed the first born blaming it on bamut. but instead of reling on Ios rage like most creatureshe instead investegated it and saw that it was Timats fault .. therefore bansihing her form his house... Timat jelous and angery created the evil dragons ...bamut to combat this created the good dragons.... Io I guess got disenchanted after taking such a long break screwd up and created kobolds |
| Gray Richardson03-15-07, 01:31 PM | I am sure there are many different myths about how Io created dragonkind, and these will vary from world to world, not to mention from dragon to dragon. Io came to Faerûn as Asgorath. One myth in the 2e Draconomicon says that Asgorath flew up to a crystal sun in the sky and "bent her form around it". Touching her breath to it, the crystal sun shattered and its many shards pierced her flesh, killing her. But where the drops of her blood fell upon the ground, dragons sprang up and the spawn of Asgorath was loosed upon an unsuspecting Toril. |
| johnwhitmyre03-20-07, 04:49 PM | In the forgotten realms isnt he responsible for allowing deities to be created. and didnt he rule over the court when cyric was tried for his crimes? i would put Io at a divine rank 21+ he is the lord of the gods in the FRs. and i think he is much more powerful then Corellon and Moradin. |
| Khael03-20-07, 04:54 PM | In the forgotten realms isnt he responsible for allowing deities to be created. and didnt he rule over the court when cyric was tried for his crimes? i would put Io at a divine rank 21+ he is the lord of the gods in the FRs. and i think he is much more powerful then Corellon and Moradin. | Khael03-20-07, 05:07 PM | Strange... I've always assumed everyone here (or indeed on a forum) was probably at least slightly crazy... If its any help though, I made the same mistakes when I first took a look. |
| Mirtek03-20-07, 05:12 PM | I think DvR 19, too |
