| Shiftkitty07-31-07, 03:46 PM | I've created a homebrew deity whose principal activity is to respond to spontaneous requests, whether well-though out or not. I got the idea while in traffic. Someone cut me off and, like most drivers, I grumbled something about revenge, like "Oh, just give me a clear shot to ram that SOB!" (I'm in an older, big heavy full-sized truck and could really mess up a Mazda Miata's day, trust me.) Like the answer to a violent prayer, traffic suddenly fell off and I had a clear shot at this guy's rear-end. Well, I'm not THAT stupid! I figured the powers that be had just called my bluff. So that got me to thinking. What if there was a deity who might or might not answer spontaneous requests for revenge or any other passionately felt urge? This would be impulsive stuff on the personal level, like "Oh please make so-and-so notice me," or "Stupid mage! Thinks he's so hot! I hope the next thing we meet in this dungeon takes his head off!" The deity I named Rouke (pronounced 'rook'), but haven't gone too far into the rest of his info, except t hint that Wee Jas might be his mother. I'm sure he'd be of the Neutral bent, CN maybe? Whether or not the prayer got answered would be on the DMs whim. I'm not sure if this domain, which I call Spontaneous Passion, is covered by any other deity. Some things might be fine and dandy, like an innocent request a child might make to find enough money to buy a toy or something, but his primary interest would be towards impulsive people. Let them make their spontaneous prayer, then open up the path for them (such as mine in traffic) and let them damn or redeem themselves. Do you guys get the idea? How would you write Rouke up? |
| Sliver_Slave07-31-07, 06:01 PM | Lots of Charisma and Intelligence, good skills(if this sounds retarded its because i've never seen a diety stat block:P ) maybe the domain would grant 1 impulse per day inceresing at 5th, 10th and 15th and such. |
| Shiftkitty07-31-07, 06:09 PM | I was thinking that visually he'd be a very seductive looking male or female (depending on the sexual preference of the supplicant, to represent temptation), red head for feistiness, dazzling silvery-blue eyes, is default appearance would be human, but he could be anything, depending once again on the supplicant. |
| Sliver_Slave07-31-07, 06:39 PM | Would he be an intermediate deity? Favored weapon? How about improvisational weapons? Maybe the Madness domain(from Lords of Madness)? Would his Clerics be Chaotic Neutral? Worshipers? |
| Shiftkitty08-01-07, 10:23 AM | Ooh! I forgot about Madness! Impulsiveness can easily fit there, and I have some old info on Tharizdun I can scavenge things from! I was thinking of making him a Lesser Deity because while everybody has such impulsive moments, actual worshippers might be fairly low in numbers. He's also kind of specialized, although I could simply have impulsiveness be only a small part of his make-up. |
| Sliver_Slave08-01-07, 01:22 PM | Off topic, isn't it hilarious how whenever they refer to the Book of Vile Darkness they say(For mature audiences., like its a TV show? Anyway, I think improvised weapons are good for a favoured weapon (like a badger). The symbol should be asymmetrical and weird. But with the Madness domain you lose some intelligence and wisdom and can use phantasmal killer. Do you really want that? Also off topic I'm going to change my avatar, but it'll still be me on this thread. |
| Shiftkitty08-01-07, 03:01 PM | I can think of a lot of books that should have that warning label, but that gets waaaay off topic and way too controversial. But yeah, it's hilarious. Nothing will make a kid want to watch a show (or read a book, listen to a CD, etc.) than a warning label. I forgot about the loss of intelligence points, but now I'm thinking. Impulsiveness doesn't require much intelligence. Being a deity, I could pretty much set Rouke's INT where I need to, but as followers get more and more impulsive, they would tend to act more and more without thinking first. Argh! I need the weekend to get here so I can sit down and hash this out! |
| Sliver_Slave08-01-07, 07:49 PM | How about improvisational weapons for the favored weapon? Also, the Madness Domain also allows something to be added to an intelligence based skill check, once a day. Maybe a re-hashed Madness Domain would be best. |
| Ell08-01-07, 08:50 PM | He is most certainly chaotic neutral, I'd say, and he could be a son of either a Lawful power deity (not physical power, obviously), deity of destiny or even a deity of love (you could use mischievous Eros with a slightly broader agenda). As his favored weapon I would use something light and probably ranged. Shortbow, throwing knives or even a hand crossbow (representing his adjustable nature) would do. One of his other duties may be to escort dead to the underworld (then maybe your idea of Wee Jas as his mother will be handy). You may also add an unusual flavor and make hem oversee mad and mentally disabled people (it can be believed that madness is a sign of divine favor). Or maybe make him a deity of dreams - good or bad. Actually, there's pretty much stuff that can fit in "chaos and passion" concept. If you want some real-life inspiration, you could research on "trickster" deities, such as Hermes and Loki. |
| Sliver_Slave08-01-07, 09:12 PM | I still say improvisational weapons should be favored. especially the badger. |
| Ell08-01-07, 10:09 PM | Sliver_Slave And you have every right to say so :D Just not three times in a row :P If you're going to incorporate the god in your world, you can do whatever you like with him. Shiftkitty asked for ideas, and the whole purpose of ideas is to have many answers on one question ;) |

| Shiftkitty08-02-07, 12:24 AM | If you were raising drow children, I'd send the SWAT team over for you. I hadn't thought about the trickster aspect. Loki, Coyote, all of the trickster gods enjoyed setting up humans, giving them enough rope and letting them hang themselves. Favored weapon... I really like the improvisational weapon idea, because it does represent things used in the heat of the moment, but the hand crossbow, particularly with its ties to the notoriously impulsive drow, is also attractive. Hmmm, thinkity thinkity think think think... |
| Ell08-02-07, 01:11 AM | If you were raising drow children, I'd send the SWAT team over for you. It is the best compliment ever, I guess  I just thought, he may be also a plane traveller(if you use the concept of planes)... Just because sometimes you just want to get very far from that angry Greater god... there really are tons of domains you can fit into trickster :plotting: |
| Sliver_Slave08-02-07, 12:30 PM | I wonder what his clerics do?.... |
| Drow6408-02-07, 01:38 PM | His holy symbol should be a christmas-style gift-wrapped box and he should appear as a human wearing mismatched clothes carrying a sack. |
| Drow6408-02-07, 01:42 PM | I wonder what his clerics do?.... His clerics should be wandering guys with sacks on their backs. Whenever some guy wishes for something, a cleric chucks a box at his head that contains a hostile [insert Tiny or Diminutive-sized animal here] or a Miracle spell. |
| Millennium08-02-07, 02:50 PM | I once read a Slayers fanfic containing a demon who was responsible for responding to people who say "What could possibly go wrong?" by ensuring that something did go wrong. This sounds sort of similar. |
