| xpochian02-18-08, 05:29 PM | hello all, i've got a 3.5e FR campaign off to a roaring start and a question came up from a player: he wanted to know if a dwarf had to chose a dwarfen deity to worship, an elf had to chose an elven deity, etc. my initial thoughts were they they wouldn't really have a reason not to, but then again, stranger things can happen. another concern is that we're using the expanded domains from other source books, and devotion feats from complete champion, so it seems that a dwarf unhappy with the lack of domains can merely shop out to a non-dwarf deity to get the domains he wants. should i be worried about this, or let it slide? i have a single player who chose a deity solely on the basis of the domain ability of the renewal domain and now that his human died, he's thinking of making a dwarven tank-cleric of lathander to reap the same benefits. thanks in advance! |

Doesn't usually make sense for a dwarf to worship elven gods. Second, a character can't get divine powers (cleric/favoured soul/etc.) from a deity if the deity doesn't allow it. So if this is what you are asking please state so. Racial gods (RAW) can only grant spells to their race. Third, a character should worship a deity that makes sense. Moradin (idk about FR setting gods) makes sense for dwarves as he created them. If they want they can worship just about any other god that makes sense. Fourth, the strange god-worshipping is often a cool idea. I can recall a game where a VAMPIRE used to worship Palor. Bending the rules, or outright ignoring them, can lead to very interesting characters. I just want to know, does it make sense for him to worship that god outside the domain? If not then I'd say no. Other then that follow previous points. |

So a human can be a cleric of Lathander, and a dwarf can be a cleric of Lathander, but while a dwarf can be a cleric of Clanggedin, a human could not be a cleric of Clanggedin. |

I don't think it should be that way either (in another thread I ranted at length against the existence of racial deities as they are), but the fact remains that that's the RAW, so you can't do it without houseruling. |
