| Gray Richardson07-22-07, 03:10 PM | Your best bet is to read the sections of the SRD regarding deities (click on the links below): Divine Rank sand Powers (http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/v35/DivineRanksandPowers.rtf) Divine Abilities and Feats (http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/v35/DivineAbilitiesandFeats.rtf) Divine Domains and Spells (http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/v35/DivineDomainsandSpells.rtf) Divine Minions (http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/v35/DivineMinions.rtf) Basically you have 4 types of gods: Demigod (ranks 1-5), Lesser Gods (ranks 6-10), Intermediate Gods (ranks 11-15), and Greater Gods (ranks 16-20). Each rank represents a rough number of worshippers, from a few hundred all the way up to a few million or more. Additionally there is a divine rank 0 that gives you some divine qualities, but not quite a deity, sometimes referred to as a hero god. The divine ranking system is a little bit like class levels, but for gods. You get more salient divine abilities and divine feats as you move up in rank. There also exist beings with divine rank 21 and above, but these are not gods. Rather, they are classified as overgods. When you get that big you sort of ascend to a higher order of reality beyond the universe. It is like epic levels for gods. But it should be stressed that overgods are not gods. They don't play in the same sandbox as gods or mortals. They move on to greater things and become pretty much irrelevant to the universe that mortals know. Overgods are not worshipped and most mortals are not even aware of them. They do not interact with the universe (with some rare special exceptions which I won't go into here). |

Deities with more divine ranks have certain extra abilities, including bonus salient divine abilities. In general, having 1-5 ranks makes you a demigod, 6-10 ranks is a lesser deity, 11-15 ranks is an intermediate deity, 16-20 is a greater deity, and anything higher than that is an overdeity. Zero divine ranks makes you a quasity-deity: not truly a god, but with the divine spark as a part of your being. RAW does not spell out how deities gain divine ranks; this is deliberately left up to the DM. In some cosmologies, deities might not be able to gain ranks at all; you're stuck with what you're born with. In others, you might not be able to gain divine ranks yourself, but another deity could give you some of his own, or you might even be able to steal them from him. In still others, it might be possible to gain divine rank through mysterious methods that only the gods (supposedly) know. In any case, it exists outside of the normal XP/leveling system. |
