| Kenzuki01-10-08, 11:03 PM | I was looking through the Deities and Demigods gallery today when I saw a few deities in the very bottum of the line that seemed kinda strange. I had never heard of these and was wondering what religions do they come from. Taiia Dennari Elishar Toldoth I especially want to know more about Toldoth and Taiia. |
| sciborg301-11-08, 01:29 AM | I don't think anything has been done with either (or really all four) of those gods since the DDG was published. I kinda wanted Toldoth to be more representative of darkness and death as a force of nature, relating to how some Koreans see the god Kud - the manifestation of the darker parts of the subconscious without being actively evil. But yeah, Toldoth is a really cool looking deity. |
| Kenzuki01-11-08, 08:49 AM | Toldoth somehow sounds jewish. I wonder if there is a connection. |
| sciborg301-11-08, 10:55 AM | The words is, though I have no real idea what it means. |
| Kenzuki01-11-08, 02:28 PM | Being that I don't have D&DD just what are these guys supposed to be? |
| sciborg301-11-08, 02:53 PM | I don't have the book with me, but here's blurbs based on memory: Taiia - The most powerful god in DDG and iirc 3e. She is meant to be a representation of (iirc) a monotheistic god, with creative and destructive powers. Her flavor is in some ways reminiscent of Hindu (some branches, not all) ideas of deities that have good/evil (really positive/negative relative to humanity) sides. Dennari - Nature goddess, based around (iirc) ideas of mystery religions meaning faiths with initiatory levels where one learns more. Whether this learning is experiential or fact-based or some combination I don't remember. Elishar - A good god of light. Toldoth - A bad god of darkness. |
| Taeldrin Laesrash01-11-08, 07:11 PM | The gods were invented specifically as examples of monotheistic religions, dualistic religions, and mystery cults. Dennari, I think, is supposed to be like Demeter and the Elysian mysteries. |
| Kenzuki01-11-08, 10:18 PM | Off hand do you know the portfolios for each so I could get a feel for them? |
| stealth_monkey01-11-08, 10:44 PM | Toldoth somehow sounds jewish. I wonder if there is a connection. Unlikely. Literally, the word toldoth means generation (as in, generations of people), it's also sometimes used as a word for family tree or genealogy. In the torah, it is also used to mark a significant jump in time, kind of like how after a flashback in a movie you'll have something like "several years later". Doesn't sound like it would have much in common with a death god. |
| The Ubbergeek01-12-08, 12:24 AM | Elishar - A good god of light. Toldoth - A bad god of darkness. It's a two gods religion, who is quite inspired from ancient iranian (and whos till exist in a way) religions... Manicheism, Zoroastrism... That kind of duality. They sounds generic maybe, but excellent for my setting in ever working, and I made them indeed a sort of Manicheism/Zoroastrism equivalent. |
| Optik04-26-08, 06:18 PM | Off hand do you know the portfolios for each so I could get a feel for them? Elishar: Portfolios: Positive Energy, light and prophecy. Domains: Good, Healing, Luck, Knowledge, Protection and Sun. Toldoth: Portfolios: Negative energy, darkness and destruction. Domains: Death, Destruction, Evil, Strength, Trickery and War |
| ripvanwormer04-27-08, 10:00 PM | Elishar, and presumedly his counterpart Toldoth, are worshipped in the world of red trees accessible from Lolth's Demonweb in Expedition to the Demonweb Pits. Dennari is a chaotic good dwarven goddess of earth, liberation, and suffering. She is portrayed as a dwarf, and her faith emerged first among the dwarves, but it has spread to many other oppressed peoples as well. Taiia is a monotheistic sun goddess resembling a four-armed, three-eyed woman with red skin and golden hair. She is both creator and destroyer, and has a lot of interesting feuding sects. |
| Orchomenos04-28-08, 11:13 AM | Check the Living Greyhawk Deities v.2.0, you might find something useful... See the link to download the PDF in my sig. |
| ripvanwormer04-28-08, 02:17 PM | Check the Living Greyhawk Deities v.2.0, you might find something useful... See the link to download the PDF in my sig. There might indeed be something useful there, but none of the gods Kenzuki was asking about are in it. |
| sciborg304-28-08, 06:07 PM | Rip, is any new detail about Toldoth given in that adventure? thanks. |
| navar10004-28-08, 06:09 PM | I find it interesting that Wee Jas looks a lot like Kate Mulgrew. |
| ripvanwormer04-28-08, 07:03 PM | Rip, is any new detail about Toldoth given in that adventure? thanks. No, he isn't mentioned. I just assume he's worshipped on the same world that Elishar is, since they were designed to be used together. No new detail on Elishar, either, except now he has a world associated with him rather than floating about in generic-space. |
| Frozen_Flame05-05-08, 12:15 PM | Toldoth means history, chronology etc. in Hebrew, No point... |
