So, my thought. How would this function as an actual in-game religion or philosophy? How would it be based without one central figure? Would it be pantheistic? Mainly I am looking for terms the order could use to describe itself and the faith. That sort of thing. This is for my character, an aasimar paladin, in a mostly undeveloped setting - so I have free reign to design my own faith and background (the local area is done in detail, but the rest of the world is left blank). |

That is pretty much the appeal - the paladin order would emulate angels and aspire towards them in heart and deed. And the angels would assist with this, providing teachings for the mortals to live by, that they may better themselves. Check out Book of Exaulted Deeds if you want more information on celestial patrons, though typically they don't accept worshippers. I did, unfortunately the info there only helps if I plan on fighting them. :P |
| sciborg206-04-07, 03:11 AM | makes sense to me - paladins (even clerics) devoted to the racial cause of the celestials. one can also say that celestials themselves with clerical special abilities and/or spellcasting powers of a cleric derive their power from this Source. |

Then you simply set up a grouping of religious strictures and your paladin becomes the embodiment of that angel and what the angel stands for. It really is a patron and as such you could be the chosen of that angel (making your character rare and unique) and allowing you to draw upon your extraordinary powers. But if you are looking for something similar to a church, traditionally angels (or even saints) don't have churches and are typically honored through good, just deeds. Then simply treat the strictures of the angel as the paladin's moral code. You may even think about looking into "channeling," the positive aspect of possession where you draw upon a holy entity to bond with you and give you power. Good luck...I like the sound of it. |
| HellflameArcanite06-05-07, 06:40 PM | In the PHB, it says that Paladins need not worship any one deity - devotion to righteousness is enough. Why, then, look to angels as anything other than brothers and sisters, for they are also champions of good and justice, while paladins are merely their mortal equivalent, just as blackguards can be described as mortal fiends. |
