Yeah, you can easily guess that I am interested in creating a deity, possibly a Demigod of DvR 5, who is known as the God of War. Based on the dark figure that appears in many album covers of a Metal band, Manowar, this being is an entity of immense power. He is Chaotic Neutral and resides in the Heroic Domains of Ysgard. His levels are: Barbarian 20/ Frenzied Berserker 10/ Legendary Dreadnaught 30. His domains are Chaos, Destruction and War. His ability scores are : Str 50, Dex 28, Con 32, Int 24, Wis 25, Cha 27. Finally, he has three favored weapons, the Greatsword, the Bastard Sword and the Warhammer.
My point is, have you guys thought of any SDAs that match his style? I believe that Divine Rage, Divine Fast Healing, Increased Spell Resistance, Divine Inspiration (Rage), Divine Weapon Focus (all his favored weapons) and Divine Weapon Specialization (all his favored weapons) would be ok.
Oh, by the way, the last two SDAs are unique, but I don`t know if it is too much. Any opinions are welcome. :)

you mean this guy? where is his neck?

Yep, that`s the one. He is one bad-ass. His neck is transculent, as is his shadowed face with the exception of his gleaming hateful eyes. Noone has ever seen his full face, noone knows his true name and noone has ever heard his voice. He is so full of mystery... :D

I kinda see him as someone with less DVR, more like an abomination from the epic level handbook that is incredibly powerful but still acceptable walking in the world...that's just me though plus his avatars could always come to fight in the world while he's in Ysgard.

I dunno.. Maybe. Maybe not. Nevertheless, I wanted a deity to be the "True" personification of a bloodthirsty warlord, the very definition of Barbarian. Plus, a Barbarian PC in my group dislikes both Kord and Erythnul, so I had to make something to match his style.
I hope it turns out ok...

Molly Hatchet has a few album covers that might offer inspiration as well.

Good luck with creating what you need. I wish I could offer better advice, but God creation is something I'm new at as well.

From the pic, he seems kind of evil, but maybe that's maybe the murderous look in his eyes and the apparently torn-off bloody heads in his hand.
Zalakhiel

06-06-07, 09:28 AM
He does have murderous intentions in his eyes, but that is just because he simply delights in battle. In order to catch the mood that accompanies him, you should listen to the song Hands of Doom, by Manowar. You will then understand what I mean and what I seek to create.

Give him an axe/bass guitar as his favoured weapon ;)

He should be a Barbarian, Frenzied Berserker, Berserk, Legendary Dreadnought (nice prestige class BTW). This would give you a potential +20 to your strength and constitution when you rage, battle fury, and frenzy. As for salient abilities-every deity needs Divine Blast, Divine Fast Healing, Divine Shield, Increased Spell Resistance, Instant Move, and Supreme Initiative. :)
Zalakhiel

06-06-07, 04:22 PM
Thanks for the input lad! Hmmm... Berserk gives you the Battle Fury... Quite a nice addition I must say. How come and instant move is on the list? I understand why you mentioned the others but, don`t you think that Irresistible Blows would be better? Anyway, please keep it coming. Thanks for the attention! :)

Instant Move is one of those abilities you never think you would need, but the simple fact that it lets you do dimension door at great range as a move action is very useful. Using Instant Move in conjunction with Dire Charge is also fun. :) Remember that crafting a deity is an art, and you should always tailor them to your taste. Irresistible Blow(hehe) is also good- I never mind being able to overcome damage reduction and most object's hardness. Another good one is Divine Dodge, any demigod of war loves a 55% (since you're DvR5) miss chance against all attacks. Let me know if you need help with anything else.

Oops... I completely forgot Divine Dodge. Damn! I will probably give him Divine Fast Healing, Divine Dodge (I will boost his Dex to 29), Divine Rage, Increased Spell Resistance, Instant Move and Divine Weapon Focus (all favored weapons) as a unique SDA. But I am willing to see if Divine Rage could be replaced. Supreme Initiative is good, but our campaign stretches up to level 30-35, so I don`t think he will need it.
The barbarian PC in the Party wants to go to the Heroic Domains of Ysgard and participate in the famous battles that take place there. There is also a 1% probability that they encounter him (The God of War) in the battlefield, and he wants to test his character`s strength by lasting against his god as much as he can. So, considering that the God of War has DR 50/- and a +13 Initiative modifier, I guess I won`t be needing Supreme Initiative much.
Finally, I know that normally Divine Blast and Divine Shield is a must-have, but this is not a typical god. He won`t shoot Divine Energy at his foes, but instead charge them and tear them limb from limb with his bare hands.

My character was the champion of Kord's planar tournaments, which we also played at level 30ish:) , and it was really fun. Angus, my god dwarf, had to fight the current champion-his own father as a petitioner. Kord said that the winner could have whatever they wanted, so I asked to compete against Kord in a jumping contest. It felt good to beat the god of strength.

Just a thought, but how are you generating this guy's stats. We use the Divine Array from the Deities & Demigods FAQ. You can use them to replace a character's starting ability rolls. The divine array also lets you add 1 point to a single ability score per divine rank. Then you add your stat increases per level, racial mods (if applicable), enhancement bonus from magical tomes (up to a +5 per ability score), random bonuses from classes( like dwarf paragon or warhulk), and bonuses from epic feats (thank you great charisma):D . The array itself is based on the stats of a titan- the numbers are 35, 28, 25, 24, 24, 24. It helps make some great stats for a deity character. :)

I will just give him the feat Great Dexterity once. I will see what to remove. As far as ability scores are concered, I use some ways inspired by the Dicefreaks. Oh, and I kept rolling till I got six 18s as a start. :P

Ok, that's fine. I just wasn't sure if you were struggling to get that 29 Dex for Divine Dodge. I'm still working through the Dicefreaks material. Like I said, if you need help with anything else- don't be afraid to ask. Its nice to find someone on these deity threads who isn't trying to bite my head off.:)

Thank you my friend. I appreciate your help.
By the way, I just finished his stats, they are Str 50, Dex 29, Con 34, Int 24, Wis 25, Cha 27.
Last but no least, his favored weapons are complete and are as follows:

1) Vengeance: +8 Cold Iron Ghost Strike, Anarchic, Vorpal Bastard Sword.

2) King`s Sword: +8 Silver Ghost Strike, Speed, Implacable, Wounding Greatsword.

3) Hell`s Last Grudge: +8 Adamantine Ghost Strike, Sonic Burst, Stunning (DC 53) Warhammer that deals 1d10 base damage.

I am not sure if the name for his hammer is suitable though, as I couldn`t think of anything better than that. He also wears his Demonic Chained Bracers that give him a +16 bonus to AC, and he wears The Ring (from "The Crown and the Ring", if you know what I am talking about ;) ) that gives him a +10 bonus on all Saving Throws.

Personally, I´d change the greatsword into an axe. Quoting "the warrior´s prayer":
"There appeared a lone rider, holding a sword of steel. Then from the South came another, bearing a battle axe. From the east came a third, holding a spiked club, and finally, from the west, a rider who wielded a great hammer of war".
This way you cover the three "big groups" of weapons, i. e. swords, axes and maces, and you are more in consistency with the themes of the band´s songs, plus many people call their guitars "axes".
I never stat deities, so I´m not any help there... Just one idea you may want to consider... Perhaps giving him some unique ability called "sign of the hammer"? ;)

I would actually consider getting a polearm of some sortlike a glaive so he can attack adjacent foes. But other then that he looks sweet. May I also request a copy of his stats.

Thank you all for your replies. I will post his stats in this thread when I am done. One last question: Is it possible to use the Instant Move SDA as part of a full-round action in which Dire Charge can also be used and thus allow this fellow to perform a full attack? I am not sure if this is possible, but if it is, then this guy will be a terror to behold (like he wouldn`t be so otherwise!!! :D ).

Ok, here we are fellows. I am done, but I am yet to see how this buddy will do. You are free to use him in your campaigns as you desire. Any thoughts about his build are more than welcome. :)

The God of War

God of War
Demigod
Symbol: A mighty hand holding a warhammer
Home Plane: Heroic Domains of Ysgard
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Portfolio: War, destruction, conflict, chaos, vengeance, rage, strength.
Worshipers: Barbarians, fighters, warlords, warriors
Cleric Alignments: CG, CE, CN
Domains: Chaos, Destruction, War
Favored Weapons: Bastard Sword, Warhammer, Greatsword

The God of War appears as an enormously powerful and muscular human male, with long dark hair covering his shadowed face. His top half body is naked, and he wears tights, boots made from dragon`s hide, two chained bracers and a spiked belt around his waist. He promotes conflict and war, and delights in the joy of battle. No one knows what his face looks like, as it is always covered in shadows, save for his gleaming hateful eyes. No one has ever heard him talk, and no one knows his real name, so everyone refers to him by his title.

Dogma: The God of War promotes battle and conflict. He holds these as his highest principles, and he teaches that only through battle can someone be found worthy for a place in the world. He also promotes rage and chaos, for it is through this uncontrolled state of the mind and soul that an individual an individual can find salvation from the "chains" imposed to them in life.

Clergy and Temples: The God of War`s clerics are always in top shape, and the vast majority of them are Clerics/Barbarians in order to emulate their god`s raging state. They are usually dressed in battle attire, and when they aren`t occupied with their duty as clerics, they are always found in their temples` gymnasioums excerising. Adventurers will get a cold welcome upon reaching their temples, unless they prove their worth in battle in a wrestling match. Their temples are usually located in places where great battles took place in the past.

The Save DCs are 23 + spell level: Chaos Domain - 1st: Protection from Law, 2nd: Shatter, 3rd: Magic Circle against Law, 4th: Chaos Hammer, 5th: Dispel Law, 6th: Animate Objects, 7th: Word of Chaos, 8th: Cloak of Chaos, 9th: Summon Monster IX (cast as a chaos spell only); Destruction Domain - 1st: Inflict Light Wounds, 2nd: Shatter, 3rd: Contagion, 4th: Inflict Critical Wounds, 5th: Mass Inflict Light Wounds, 6th: Harm, 7th: Disintegrate, 8th: Earthquake, 9th: Implosion; War Domain - 1st: Magic Weapon, 2nd: Spiritual Weapon, 3rd: Magic Vestment, 4th: Divine Power, 5th: Flame Strike, 6th:Blade Barrier, 7th: Power Word Blind, 8th: Power Word Stun, 9th: Power Word Kill.
Divine Weapon Focus (all favored weapons) (unique salient divine ability): The God of War is so well trained in the use of bastard swords, warhammers, and greatswords, that he receives the benefit of any feat or SDA that improves his prowess with one of these three weapons to all of them simultaneously. Thus, he receives the +4 bonus of the Divine Weapon Focus SDA to all his favored weapons.
Divine Rage/Frenzy (unique salient divine ability): The God of War can enter a rage or frenzy 5 times per day each, after suffering damage from a weapon. Both last for 1 hour (and the God of War can end both effects at will). When raging he recieves a +10 bonus to his Strength and Constitution and a +5 morale bonus on Will saves. His Spell Resistance and Energy Resistances increase by +10, and he can make an extra attack at his highest attack bonus when using the full-attack action. When he rages he suffers a -5 penalty to AC and cannot perform acts that require patience and concentration, such as moving silently, casting spells, and using salient divine abilities. When he enters a frenzy, he recieves yet another +10 to his Strength and a -5 penalty to AC, and cannot die due to hp loss. He does not suffer non-lethal damage every round, and his DRs both increase by +10.

Other Divine Powers

As a Demigod, the God of War treats a 1 on an attack roll or saving throw normally and not as an automatic failure. He is immortal.
Senses: The God of War can see, hear, touch, and smell at a distance of five miles. As a standard action, he can perceive anything within five miles of his worshipers, holy sites, objects, or any location where his title was spoken in the last hour.
He can extend his senses to up to two locations at once. He can block the sensing power of deities of his rank or lower at up to two remote locations at once for 5 hours.
Portfolio Sense: The God of War is aware of any upcoming battle involving one thousand people or more. He is also aware of any feat of great rage or grand act of violence performed during frenzy.
Automatic Actions: The God of War can use Intimidate, Craft (Weaponsmithing), Craft (Armorsmithing) and any Strength-related skill as a free action, as long as the DC for the task is 15 or lower. He can only perform tasks that would normally be accomplished with a simple Strength check as a free action. He can perform up to two such free actions each round.
Create Magic Items: The God of War can create any type of weapon or armor, as long as the item`s market price does not exceed 4,500 gp.

Edit: I am sorry, I forgot his possessions.

Possessions: Apart from his three enormously powerful weapons, the God of War also possesses two other magic items, his Demonic Chained Bracers that grant him a +16 Armor bonus to AC, and The Ring, which grants him a +10 Resistance bonus on all his Saving Throws.

Yup, it is a move action, and you can take a double move as part of a charge- including the full attack action you get from Dire Charge. But it does have the DvR6 prerequisite, as you said. He turned out really cool, let me know how your PCs do against him- should they run into him on the plains of Ysgard.

Oh my god... Taking a better look at this, he is really powerful, but if he had one more Divine Rank... What a nightmare!!!
Anyway, thanks for the comments. My players are expected to last about 1 minute against him, I have playtested their power against the God of War. He received 3 strikes, a critical hit from the party`s Half-Dragon fighter for 178 damage, an epic spell from the party`s wizard (he rolled a 20 to overcome his SR, lol) for 231 damage, and a Sneak Attack from the party`s rogue via Telling Blow for 95 damage. All the party members are lvl 34. After that, the wizard was torn apart from a critical hit for 541 damage, the fighter recieved a full attack and fell, the cleric was killed when the God of War charged him, and the rogue... well, the God of War grappled him and tried to break his spine in pieces. Poor little rogue... But I had to use Unstoppable at least once!... ;)
Well, you get the point. I use this guy in the Heroic Domains of Ysgard in order to not hold back. Since they get resurrected every morning, they have nothing to lose and I have no fun to miss! :P

Sounds pretty good. I´d only make two comments... The symbol should be two human arms, one of which is holding the other by the wrist, making a T of sorts (if you´ve ever been to a Manowar concert, you´ll know what I mean...).
Also, this guy really reminds me in many things of Tempus, the Faerûnian god of war... Maybe he´s an aspect of Tempus? ;)
