| JiCi02-27-07, 04:00 PM | Has anyone tried to convert the 13 animals of the chinese Zodiac into D&D deities ? - Rat - Ox - Tiger - Rabbit - Dragon - Snake - Horse - Sheep - Monkey - Rooster - Dog - Pig - Cat |
| Doom_Linnorm02-27-07, 04:05 PM | Uhm, its 12, Cat isn't in the Zodiac. Order of the Stick anybody? Still though it's been used before, interesting idea. |
| Sledgerosaur02-27-07, 04:16 PM | lol i did not notice the cat up there... i think as said before do it oots style and have them all as one sort of set together and a cleric could pick an "aspect" of the zodiac for his special powers... |
| JiCi02-27-07, 04:32 PM | Well, according to legends, the cat was supposed to be in the Zodiac until the snake deceived it. I got the ideas from Okami, where the Zodiac is depicted as gods... if it,s good for a PS2 game, it could good for a D&D game, right ? |
| Joni-san02-27-07, 06:46 PM | Actually, it was the Rat that deceived the Cat. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origins_of_the_Chinese_Zodiac) |
| spncrbrrtt02-27-07, 07:04 PM | [QUOTE=Doom_Linnorm;11609243]Uhm, its 12, Cat isn't in the Zodiac.[QUOTE] Says you! worship Hatsuharu and Kyo. and Banjo. :D |
| WarDragon02-27-07, 07:45 PM | You mean, anyone aside from Rich (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0407.html) Burlew? (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0273.html) |
| PunkRockBard02-27-07, 09:50 PM | i am playing Okami right now......what a beautiful, sensitive game. More should be like that. Chinese zodiac is a great idea. Go for it. |
| JiCi02-28-07, 08:14 AM | Thank you. My idea is to create a new D&D pantheon, like the racial pantheons, based on the zodiac. Since all are animals, except the dragon, and that they have a strong tie to nature, I'm aiming a Nature pantheon. What I need now is each animal's portfolio, so I can get domains out if it. - Rat: leadership, control, law, obedience - Ox: prosperity, hard work, patience, sincerity, strength - Tiger: authority, exploration, instinct - Rabbit: good manners, scholarship, minuty - Dragon: strength, luck, destiny - Snake: intelligence, thoughts, judgement - Horse: freedom, cunning, honesty, inspiration - Sheep: art, creation, sympathy - Monkey: versatility, mischief, talent, stamina - Rooster: observation, bravery, love, gromming - Dog: loyalty, empathy, helping others - Pig: friendship, food, nature - Cat: curiosity, vengeance, games How does it look like ? |
| Anubis.c.k02-28-07, 12:29 PM | what about protection for dog man has used dogs to guarded them for years |
| ArcTan02-28-07, 02:40 PM | Since the Cat is an exiled or disgraced member of the pantheon, it might serve as an "evil" god or outsider god, as with Loki and the Norse pantheon. Also, since this is based on the zodiac, the animals more represent abstract human personality traits, not things the animals do in real life. |
| blackjackg02-28-07, 02:48 PM | It is with a small amount of shame that I post this, because I know it's not quite what you asked for, but I accidentally missed part of the OP's last post until after I finished, and I think it looks pretty cool. This builds on Sledgerosaur's idea that the gods are worshipped as a unit, and a cleric follows "the Path of the Rooster," "the Dragon," etcetera. So I figure the collective has twelve domains, and a player chooses a path associated with two of them. I've excluded the cat since, as Arctan noted, he ought to be an Outsider deity. So without further ado, the twelve paths of Zodiac worship: Rat - Fate, Knowledge Ox - Strength, Creation Tiger - Nature, Travel Rabbit - Celerity, Community Dragon - Strength, Luck Snake - Knowledge, Trickery Horse - Celerity, Travel Sheep - Creation, Healing Monkey - Trickery, Fate Rooster - Protection, Luck Dog - Healing, Protection Pig - Nature, Community All the domains above are found in the PHB, the Spell Compendium or Oriental Adventures. I figured if this was the only pantheon in the campaign, you could bend the rules and make all twelve Neutral and allow a cleric of any alignment to worship them. Anyway, sorry it's not what you asked for. I present it as food for thought. Good luck. |
| swallowyersoul02-28-07, 03:20 PM | dude, that's a really interesting idea. you could probably get into too many goofy arguments about whether your portfolios are right or not, so trust your own lights on that score. the only thing i'd mention is you don't have a lot of the 'bad guy' traits listed there yet: tyranny, cruelty, suffering. do you plan to have a different pantheon for evil clerics? but overall, good idea and great work. |
| Melpomene02-28-07, 05:38 PM | Rat - Fate, Knowledge, Law Ox - Strength, Creation, Wealth Tiger - Nature, Travel, Law Rabbit - Celerity, Community, Chaos Dragon - Strength, Luck, Glory, Dragon Snake - Knowledge, Trickery, Inquisition Horse - Celerity, Travel, Charm Ram - Creation, Healing, Destruction (or Compitition) Monkey - Trickery, Fate, Chaos Rooster - Protection, Luck, Knowledge Dog - Healing, Protection, Good Boar - Nature, Community, Law Cat - Evil, Chaos, Trickery Adding to Blackjack... |
| Doom_Linnorm03-01-07, 10:54 AM | About the Cat. It wasn't much of a legend, more of a folktale that got out of hand. I believe it started as a children's story to why there wasn't a cat in the Zodiac. Well in China, cat's weren't pets as early as the origin of the Zodiac I believe, next to that the Tiger is part of the Cat family. (Its just a very big, ferocious, somtimes human-murdering cat :D) |
| The Ubbergeek03-01-07, 04:13 PM | The constellations as deities is a cool idea... It have an Hokuto or Saint Seiya feels. |
