| DungeonMogrii05-10-07, 06:27 AM | Hello. In an upcoming adventure I'll hace my planewalking PC traveling to the Hinterlands to find a lost artifact. Right now they are in the inner outlands, near the spire, right between the first and second ring and there are a lot of magic lacking repercutions there. So, on the other side, on the Hinterlands of the Outlands....are there any special effects? What happens to magic? Any source will do, 2ed, 3ed, homebrew, I just want to know what happens there. Also, if you have any strange ideas of what may lie in wait for the planewalkers there I am more tha willing to hear them. |
| HidaAkira05-10-07, 07:26 AM | There's always this site http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/9974/hinter.htm |
| Encard05-10-07, 07:49 AM | If I recall correctly, there's no special effect on magic in the Hinterlands. As for what could be out there - anything at all. They're an infinite terrain of just about anything the DM's mind can cook up. |
| Taeldrin Laesrash05-10-07, 09:15 AM | Magic is empowered in the Hinterlands, just like it's impeded close to the Spire. You can cast 10th-level spells in the 10th ring, 11th level in the 11th, and so on (Not like Improved Spell Capacity spells. Stuff like the Netherese magic). You don't find gods in the 12th ring or beyond, since there, you could supposedly recast Karsus' Avatar. |
| Shemeska the Marauder05-10-07, 10:46 AM | There's a theory about magic being empowered beyond the ring of the gatetowns, but I can't recall if the theory was from a book, the mimir page, or develped elsewhere online. As for the hinterlands themselves, they're the place of half-formed ideals, half-formed ideas, concepts that fit nowhere else or are still developing or are slowly dying. I'm fond of forgotten pantheons huddling in seclusion, things intended to stay lost, a constant fluid shifting of the environment where things vanish and emerge from nothing yet were there all the time in a manner of speaking (something seen once might never be seen again, or might be there ten seconds later after it evaporated). The shifting pattern and structure isn't chaos, it's not instability, it's more intangibility. A pity the section on the Hinterlands I wrote for a piece in Dragon 351 got trimmed for space. I had some speculation about the place and its nature, including the notion that it held the manifest dreamscapes of outsiders, and the nature might change as you went around the periphery of the ring. I've sent my PCs into the Hinterlands on three occasions. Once to the tomb/prison of the god of the Tiere/Gautiere, once to find a (possibly fallen) guardinal daughter of Duke Lucan of Elysium living in self-imposed exile, and another time because of a horribly botched planeshift. |
| ripvanwormer05-10-07, 01:29 PM | Here's the Mimir's Hinterlands subsite (http://www.mimir.net/outlands/hinterlands.shtml), complete with theories and musings. I see the Hinterlands as a misty, subjective place, the home of those ideas too unaligned and personal to become part of the corelands - but at the same time, there are definitely realms there that are solid enough, even if they appear different to each observer. I accept most of the locations described on Alex Roberts' Hinterlands site that HidaAkira links to above, particularly the Hintersea (since Glorium has a fjord, it makes sense that there's a sea beyond it, although it would be valid to assume the fjord just leads to the unnamed river the Planescape boxed set says flows ultimately into the Oceanus). |

Once to the tomb/prison of the god of the Tiere/Gautiere, I don't suppose you've anything written up about what they found there? I could use some ideas for a planar campaign on the go. The PCs will be in Carceri to meet with an Anarchist information broker, and I'd thought of having them encounter some Gautiere on the way out--possibly having to bargain with them for exit. Have loved the imagery since seeing them in Planes of Conflict. |
| Shemeska the Marauder05-13-07, 09:00 PM | I don't suppose you've anything written up about what they found there?[/i]. It's buried in my notes somewhere I'm sure, but I'm not sure if it's handwritten or typed. The bit with the god of the tiere/gautiere will come up during the next plot arc of my first Storyhour, but that'll be some time before I get to that part. |
