| ryuspearhead09-12-07, 06:00 PM | the plane of trash - it's the frist day of school im bored so i created the plane of trash an ever growing plane of trash (1mill by 1 mill squares and grows 100 sq. each day) any ideas? :) xd |
| malykoth09-12-07, 06:08 PM | While your description is minimalist (to say the least)...the idea might have some merit. The idea of a plane that ends up with much of the refuse of the other planes is an intriguing one. By definition, there shouldn't be anything of actual value on the plane...but as they say, "one man's trash is another man's treasure". I see it looking very "Jim Henson"-ish, with towering mounds of all sorts of broken and discarded items. The place would probably stink something aweful. Since there would be a good deal of decay, there might be some types of undead lurking in the canyons and valleys of refuse. Also giant flies, giant maggots, rats and vermin of all sorts...will-o'-the-wisps...diseases would be a problem. While I contend there shouldn't be anything of value here...rules were meant to be broken. Perhaps rumors persist of a powerful artifact buried somewhere near the center of the plane...carelessly thrown away by one of a race of god-like beings at the dawn of history. |
| GoukaRyuu09-12-07, 08:13 PM | Or as you said yourself one man's trash another's treasure. The only rule the plane could have is that someone tossed it deeming it worthless, to them being trash, and it found it's way to said demi-plane. Doesn't mean that there couldn't still be many valuable things there. And, as you posted, there would be enough living or undead creatures to keep most adventurers out. This should be developed further. |
| dfarnsworth09-12-07, 08:18 PM | Or it could also be that place all my left socks disappear too... |
| Zousha_Omenohu09-12-07, 08:28 PM | No, that would be the Demiplane of Laundry.:D |
| schpeelah09-13-07, 02:46 PM | You are talking about the 2nd layer of Acheron, Thuldanin (http://www.planewalker.com/encyclopedia/encyclopedia.php?intEntryID=2655). |
| Ornum09-13-07, 03:11 PM | You are talking about the 2nd layer of Acheron, Thuldanin (http://www.planewalker.com/encyclopedia/encyclopedia.php?intEntryID=2655). Not necessarily. That's where discarded weapons and war machines end up. Those things are only a small fraction of the actual trash of the multiverse. Personally, if I had a kingdom where magic was available, I'd just have one of my court wizards place a one-way gate to the Elemental Plane of Fire in certain cities so that the general populace could just incinerate their garbage, but I'm pretty sure the efreet would frown upon that. |
| 42009-13-07, 03:18 PM | I see it looking very "Jim Henson"-ish, with towering mounds of all sorts of broken and discarded items. I assume you mean the scene in Labyrinth (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091369/) with the Junk Lady. I see it as a demiplane, similar to the Plane of Shadow in that it has randomly opening portals of various sizes on the Material Plane. That would indeed explain where all my socks go, maybe the spinning of a dryer is a catalyst to one of these portals opening for a brief time. -420 |
| Surgo09-13-07, 03:32 PM | The demiplane of trash is certainly one of the best ideas for demiplanes I've ever heard of. Perhaps after a certain time of being discarded, things that aren't various sorts of waste would end up there...it would be a large demiplane, definitely, but still bounded. |
| Bedlamtom09-13-07, 04:11 PM | Or it could also be that place all my left socks disappear too... I thought that everybody knew that socks are the larval form of hangers. That's why you always have too few socks and too many hangers when you finish. |
| RodinGates09-13-07, 04:30 PM | Perhaps the plane of trash could simply be the destination for all objects that simply vanish without a trace. Items that people simply assume to have misplaced are instead summoned to this anomalous demiplane and have piled there for centuries. Or perhaps it could be a demiplane which is the ancestral home of the Ethereal Filchers. All Filchers could originate from this plane and come back to deposit the spoils of their hunts. No one knows why they bring it all there. Some think it's to brag and compare with their brethren, but others think its part of some grand and nefarious purpose! At present the likely plan is as follows... PHASE 1: Collect Trash from Other Planes PHASE 2: ?????? PHASE 3: Profit! |
| timidbarbarian09-13-07, 05:45 PM | What would work great would be an elemental from the demiplane of Trash. The garbage-mental. Just take the earth elemental, take away earth glide, replace that with garbage glide, get rid of the DR and replace it with Regeneration/something (representing the garbage-mental's ability to absorb nearby refuse into itself), and attach a disease to the slam attack. For even more fun, you could have the type of damage done by the slam (piercing, slashing, bludgeoning) randomly change, since the thing is made of an assortment of garbage. |
| ryuspearhead09-13-07, 05:55 PM | ok this is what i got knowone knows who it formed but it did form within the last age . there are two main figures a construct dragon the belives in destoring trash LE , and a semi- crazy but very powerful sor. - CG - who is loves making machines he - he lives in the junkyard the resting place of mechanics which takes up 1/4 of the demi plane he has also created collectors weak constructs made of fabric that port to the planes to gather trash every day , and bring him the mechianics . ( in reality hes not that crazy and really horads magical items that people have thrown away, not knowing what they were , he's human but hes at least 200 years old but does look over 50 or 60 ) |
| awaken_D_M_golem09-13-07, 05:59 PM | You are talking about the 2nd layer of Acheron, Thuldanin (http://www.planewalker.com/encyclopedia/encyclopedia.php?intEntryID=2655). Bingo. There's also the "possibility" that everything Disintegrated ends up there, too. Alas, that doesn't explain what happens to anything neither war trash nor disintegrated. Juiblex and Zuggtmoy are the logical extension of garbage, even if their behavior is more Pazuzu-esque than anything else. Taken seriously, a Plane of Trash would have to be a strange middle ground or even a triangulation away from Thuldanin and mega-Oozes. That's a good point for what magic spells are suppressed. Have fun. |
| Rinian209-14-07, 03:20 AM | Everything that was ever discarded would be in a Plane of Trash. This would include weird forms of magic that were replaced with normal forms, old religions and perhaps old gods, the light from the souls of Blacknights, the minds of the insane, and of course the innocence of children. There might even be forgotten directions like Nouth and Sorth, Widdershins and Bacund, that would make finding anything in the Plane that much harder. Some things get discarded even if they are still needed. I really like the idea though. I can imagine immense quests to find anything through a landscape filled with dinosaurs and floating mountains and things best left in the trash. |
| goldomark09-14-07, 03:36 AM | Its a really cool idea that concepts and symbols can be discarted too. Nice idea Rinian2. But how do they manifest in the demiplane of trash? I mean physicaly. It seems very close to the demiplane of inventions, from that 2ed book, the Vortex of Madness, I believe. |
| Rohano09-15-07, 04:27 AM | There's lots of Planes of Trash. Acheron, Arcadia, the Abyss, Baator... all of them are trash. Why? Because the d20 material on them is too vague! *throws stuff* Actually, I'd say the Abyss is trash. A bottomless pit can't help but be a giant trash can. |
| Zousha_Omenohu09-15-07, 04:07 PM | Would I be correct in assuming that you haven't read either of the Fiendish Codecies? Those go into quite a bit of detail about the Abyss and The Nine Hells (Though I think they did better with Baator, since they have a finite number of layers.) |
| Another_Poet09-15-07, 05:05 PM | I would add a strong presence of Tatterdanaminals (spontaneously occuring junk constructs from MMII) to such a plane. ap |
| Zousha_Omenohu09-17-07, 08:00 AM | Not to mention the other kinds of Raggamofyns (probably butchered the spelling there). |
| malykoth09-17-07, 09:04 AM | Would it best be an outer plane or inner plane? Somewhere in the ethereal? It's kind of like the opposite of an elemental plane. |
| Skritz_the_Lizardmen09-17-07, 07:32 PM | I like the idea of "The plane of trash" so i began working on it, for fun... Normal Time Infinite Size Mildly Chaos Aligned I worked on some of its inhabitant, but i don't have time to write all the stuff here and now. |
| malykoth09-18-07, 03:51 PM | The Elemental Plane of Refuse It is well understood that the Inner Planes provide the building blocks of the rest of the multiverse, but less known is the existence of the Plane of Refuse. This quasi-elemental plane doesn’t produce anything at all, but it does act as a depository...a place that embodies the fairly new concept of “garbage”. It should be noted that not all of the garbage of the multiverse comes to this one plane...clearly, other planes do accrue their own. Probably only a very small percentage actually seeps through, but a very small percentage of an infinite number of planes equals an endless stream of trash. The Plane of Refuse has the following traits: Normal Gravity: Erratic Time: Natives call this effect “wasted time”. When subjective time increases, you have found someone else’s wasted time, when subjective time contracts, you have wasted your own time. The effect is rolled when one first arrives, and rolled again at the end of each indicated “Erratic Time” duration listed on page 10 of the Manual of the Planes. Size: Infinite Mildly Chaos-Aligned: Lawful characters on the Plane of Refuse suffer a -2 penalty on all Charisma-based checks. Magical Traits: Most of the plane reacts normally to magic, but zones of dead magic are common, covering roughly 10% of the plane. Most are rather small, but some patches take a full day to march across. Features of the Plane of Refuse: For travelers arriving in Refuse for the first time, the first thing they invariably notice is the stench. The odor of fetid rot is almost palpable. Plumes of smoke, some of titanic size, are seen in every direction, drifting up into the dark green, overcast sky. The plane is in a perpetual state of twilight, with no visible source of light in the sky. The air is thick with ash and air-borne particles of filth. Frequently, the dark clouds will drizzle down showers of gray, oily rain. Dust storms of rust also blow through on occasion, as do especially dangerous acid storms. Most impressive though, is the continuous fall of rubbish...debris from all over the multiverse. In every direction, as far as the eye can see, one is likely to see nothing but endless hills and mountains of garbage. Everything from table scraps and broken pottery to shattered hulls and abandoned buildings. It forms deep valleys and towering plateaus of twisted metal and crumbling bricks. The acrid yellow and gray rivers cut out deep canyons and flow into sludge choked deltas. Paths and tunnels appear throughout the plane, and areas near the few inhabited places become warren-like labyrinths. Huge swarms of flies, cockroaches and other vermin, from normal mundane species to monstrously giant ones, infest the land. A few mundane animal species have adapted to life here, notably rats, seagulls, pidgeons, feral cats and a mangey breed of wild dog. Unfortunately, many such animals develop tumors, lose their fur, or show other signs of disease and general bad health. Indeed, disease is rife in this plane, and one would do well to take steps to prevent infection or infestation. As with most elemental planes, obtaining food and water can be problematic. By its very definition, trash has no value, but as the mortal saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” A few brave individuals (blessed with strong stomachs and hardy constitutions) sift around looking for just such treasures. Though few ever find anything of real worth, rumors and tales always circulate about this treasure or that artifact, always just waiting to be found by some lucky scavenger. Burning Slag Mountains: This particularly range of junk and slag is larger than many mundane mountains. You know you’re getting close when you see the sky darkening, and you can start to smell the smoke over the omnipresent stench. Ash drifts begin getting deeper, and the horizon takes on an orange glow. Innumerable fires, some larger than a human nation, burn over the entire range. Eventually, the smoke (which even rises out of the ground) blocks all normal vision, and the wet heat becomes more than a mortal can withstand without magic. Church of the Salvage: A young faith that hopes to appeal to sentient constructs, especially warforged. They have a small order of constructs here known as the Seekers of the Steel Prophet. Their leaders believe the founder of the faith, the Steel Prophet, was destroyed on their home plane, and that the parts of the Prophet's body were scattered on this plane. They seek these holy relics, to one day properly restore the Steel Prophet, as per the Celestial Diagram. Hogwash: This village of dark ones (Fiend Folio) exists behind a torrential waterfall of slop. In addition to the normal practices of dark ones, they also raise blind pigs and sell the meat (at exorbitant prices...especially considering the quality) to some of the nearby communities. Liberty: A small community of mongrelfolk (Fiend Folio) whose exact location is unknown, as it can quickly be broken down and moved. Said to be led by a powerful oracle that is never seen, as she never leaves her large, wicker basket home. Scraphaven: The largest settlement on Refuse, this tottering collection of shanties and tents is home to a large group of determined (and slightly mad) scavengers and trash-miners. They scour the piles looking for the rare bit of worth amongst the dross. Several unsavory “taverns” can be found, the most popular being the Soiled Tart. Humans, tieflings, dwarves, gnomes, goblins and kenku are the most common races encountered here. Skitterskreep: A village of inbred halfling were-rats. They have a grudge against the mongrelfolk of Liberty, but have been unable to successfully locate them. They would pay much for this information. Valley of Broken Toys: Hundreds of discarded toys and dolls have somehow come to life (as per the animated object spell, but with the sentience rules of the awaken spell) in this place, and have formed a primitive society of their own. They are very antagonistic towards living humanoids, especially children, as the toys blame them for their current forlorn condition and wretched circumstance. If any of the toys leave the valley, they become lifeless within a few hours. They have been known to risk this danger to go on 'rescue missions', finding more broken toys to bring back to the valley. Wastewater Ocean: The largest body of “fluid” known on this plane is filled with the brackish run-off of a billion worlds. Foamy waves of sullage crash down on the greasy clay shores. Of special note is the region called the Sewage Sea. This stretch of septic fluid is arguably the worst location on the whole plane, as it is fed by countless, offal-belching sewer pipes all along the coast. Vast herds of otyughs like to swarm here. Plane of Refuse Inhabitants: This plane is not very hospitable to most life forms, with a few notable exceptions. In nearly all cases, the specimens found here will be bedraggled and often diseased. The following creatures could potentially be found: • MM I: animated object; ankheg, athach, basilisk, bat (normal and dire), belker, carrion crawler, cat, centipede (monstrous), chuul, dog, ettercap, fungus, ghoul, gibbering mouther, goblin, grick, hag, harpy, mephit (dust, fire, ooze), mohrg, ooze, otyugh, phantom fungus, purple worm, rat (normal and dire), roper, rust monster, skeleton, skum, swarm (bat, centipede, rat), thoqqua, wight, will-o’-wisp, wraith, xorn, zombie. • MM II: ash rat, avolakia, bone ooze, catoblepas, darktentacles, flesh jelly, fomorian, grell, jermlaine, leechwalker, megapede, morkoth, myconid, raggamoffyn, rukarazyll, vaporighu. • MM III: brood keeper, dust wight, ephemeral swarm, odopi, otyugh (lifeleech), rot reaver, seryulin. • MM IV: corrupture. • MM V: deadborn vulture, demon (adaru), fetid fungus, ruin chanter, ruin elemental, rylkar, spawn of juiblex. • Fiend Folio: aquatic ooze, chwidencha, dark one (creeper and stalker), devil (filth imp...though the plane is mildly chaotic, the filth imps simply adore the ambiance), lucent worm, mongrelfolk, phiuhl, slaad (mud), sporebat, swarm (plague ant, scarab beetle), tunnel terror. • Manual of the Planes: paraelemental (ooze, smoke). • Heroes of Horror: boneleaf, elemental (taint). • Liber Mortis: bone rat swarm, boneyard, corpse rat swarm, dire maggot, raiment, skin kite, skulking cyst, tomb mote. • Lords of Madness: gas spore. • Planar Handbook: shadow jelly, unraveler, void ooze. • Sandstorm: ashworm, dunewinder, jackal, mephit (sulphur), termite (giant), vulture (normal and dire). • Stormwrack: albatross, crab (monstrous), leech (giant), snapping turtle, swarm (leech), uchuulon. Trash Elementals*: These creatures are unique to this plane. Use the rules for ice elementals (MotP), but with the following alterations: remove Air and Cold subtype, damage reduction, and Chill Metal, change attack to slam and remove cold damage, but gain the following: Trash Glide (Ex): as an earth elemental's Earth Glide, but only through garbage. Regeneration (Ex): each round that a trash elemental is in contact with a pile of garbage, it can heal a number of hit points. A Small-sized elemental does not have this ability. A Medium-sized elemental gains regeneration 1, and each size increment after that adds one to the regeneration rate, to a maximum of regeneration 5 for an elder trash elemental. It cannot heal fire based damage in this manner. Diseased Slam (Ex): Once the elemental has gained at least 8 HD, it can inflict the effects of a contagion spell on any opponent that it makes a successful critical hit against with its slam attack. This has an effective caster level equal to the elemental's hit dice, and the save is Constitution-based. Variable Damage (Ex): As a free action, at the start of its turn, it can decide if it inflicts bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage with its slam attack. It will inflict the same type of damage until its next turn, whereupon it can switch types or retain the same type as it sees fit. Constructed (Ex): Spells, effects, powers, and abilities that affect or target constructs also affect trash elementals (in addition to those that affect elementals). They gain no other traits associated with the construct type. * Thanks to timidbarbarian ;) Entities of note: • Acolyte 008 of the First Series: A warforged cleric of the Church of the Salvage, and the highest ranking member of the Seekers of the Steel Prophet. • Boruk Rustbucket: This eccentric and powerful dwarven artificer makes his home here. Inside a giant sphere of rusted iron, he has set up his cluttered, chaotic lab, which he shares with Vod. The area around his lab is crawling with all manner of functional (if unattractive) constructs, most notably a trio of shredstorms (MMIII). He is aided by Verdigris, his corroded nimblewright (MM II) assistant. • “The Emperor”: This colossal teratomorph (60 HD; MMII) can be found in the depths of the Wastewater. It is always encountered with several smaller specimens (40 to 50 HD), though they have been known to attack each other occasionally while fighting any perceived opponents. • Grungla: A unusual fey that claims to be the first "trash nymph". At a distance, she could easily be mistaken for a half-elf. She has an oddly beautiful face, but a bit hard and bedraggled, surrounded by dishwater gray locks of lank hair. She always wears a long, dirty burlap cloak and hood. When the cloak is removed, you can see that her body is actually composed of muck and rubbish, molded into a humanoid shape and wrapped in discarded clothing. She's enigmatic, and has been known to drive away travelers from some locations, even to the point of using dangerous force. On the other hand, she's been known to save lost travelers from certain doom. • Iclapolis*: An undead gynosphynix, who appears to have undergone a process very similar to the one used to create a necropolitan (Liber Mortis). She is thin, and her skin is stretched tightly over her frame. She guards the smoldering remains of what was once a library. Inside is said to be fragments of scrolls and shredded books that hold concepts, ideas, philosophies and goals long since discarded by all living civilizations. She has yet to allow any to enter, though she'll be formal, even polite to those who approach her, as long as they don't seek the discarded knowledge. She is aided by a flock of a dozen blackwings (MMV). When one is destroyed, another will soon fly out of the darkened entryway. * Thanks to Rinian2 ;) • Karg the Unfortunate: The self-proclaimed King of the Beggars in Scraphaven. He maintains his position solely due to his odd friendship with Leatherhead. A sycophantic human (though something of a bully amongst his own kind), he knows a great deal about the daily activities of his home turf. • Leatherhead: A sentient, hulking flesh golem that works for Karg. No one believes Karg could have built him, but he seems content to follow the Beggar King’s lead. Still, some note a tiny hint of fear in Karg’s eyes when he tells Leatherhead what to do, as if he always fears one day the golem will turn on him. When not on a mission for Karg, the golem often just sits around and fiddles with various bits and pieces he picks up from the ubiquitous junk. • Muskmor: the dark stalker (Fiend Folio) leader of the town of Hogwash. Also said to be a master poison brewer. • Old Muck: An advanced corpse tearer linnorm (34 HD; MMII), makes her abode on a large mesa just south of the Burning Slag mountains. No other creature knows more about the Plane of Refuse than her. • Pops Seriano: A grizzled old human ranger (favored terrain: garbage) that claims to know the area around Scraphaven like the back of his filthy hand. He has a small swarm of rats that act as his animal companions, though he is no ally of Skitterskreep. • Rumble: This enormous juggernaut (54 HD; MMII), is known to endlessly trudge over the foul landscape. It is said to have a glimmer of evil intelligence that compels it to roll over any living thing it encounters, though luckily it cannot stay in any one region too long and usually leaves any encounter after a minute or two. • Tatters: A ragged gray jester (Heroes of Horror) that holds court in a dilapidated, mildewed theater outside Scraphaven. Luckily for him, a fairly well known portal is located very near his theater. He uses illusions to brighten the facade and to make his bleak-one servants appear friendlier. He likes to offer a “brief respite” to those who are overwhelmed by the foulness of the plane...and occasionally feeding on a patron here and there. • Vod: Reputed to once have been a beautiful woman, this 'brain in a jar' (Liber Mortis) is a brilliant artificer, and shares a giant yet cluttered lab with the dwarf Boruk Rustbucket. She would prefer a more ordered workspace, but this goal always eludes her; she can't tidy the place as fast as Boruk makes a mess of it. She has placed her jar inside the body of a customized iron golem. |
| GoukaRyuu09-18-07, 04:06 PM | Really well crafted. You took the idea and really fleshed it out. Keep up the good work! |
| malykoth09-18-07, 10:07 PM | Added some stuff to features and entities...and a monster list from MMV. |
| Rinian209-19-07, 03:48 AM | Size: Infinite ... and getting larger? Any wasteful civilisation will produce more garbage than it can deal with effectively. Could this mean that the Elemental Plane of Refuse might eventually erupt into the scrap heaps and garbage dumps of the Material Plane? Overflowing through spontaneously created gates into discarded parts? Wastegates and Broken Portals might be behind the disappearance of many that scavenge from the trash piles of the Material Plane. I think that some Trash school spells are needed though... I don't think that a broadly scoped Locate Object would be a good idea in this Plane. |
| xXOblivionXx09-19-07, 02:33 PM | The Elemental Plane of Refuse... This is awesome! it's one of the best things I've seen here :) |
| ArgulFraster09-19-07, 06:41 PM | Now one wonders-what happens if a god uses a maximized, empowered, divine Prestidigition (clean) on the place? Or is this the place to which things cleaned by Prestidigitation go, or from which things sullied by the same come? Divine Prestidigitation brings in a lot more fun to this plane. |
| locustechpriest09-19-07, 08:14 PM | I thought that everybody knew that socks are the larval form of hangers. That's why you always have too few socks and too many hangers when you finish. Which is exactly why I don't wear socks. Would you like it if someone were to step on your children all day long? Luckily those larvae are sturdy buggers. The Elemental Plane of Refuse Excellent idea (actually, the idea wasn't that amazing, but it captured a lot of imagination, and then brutally bent it toward it's filthy ends). I see this plane has evolved from demi- to outer. I've seen it said here a few times that "all discarded objects" find their way here. That can't be so! If every discarded thing came here, there would be no discarded things not here... which I'm sure doesn't need saying. With that in mind, are there any conditions that must be met (unattended to be sure, perhaps unseen and forgotten would help) in order for the plane to "select" an object? Would this defeat the idea of looking for a specific object whisked away to this endless dump? (Forgotten things are rarely missed.) I love and support the idea of it being the endpoint of all disintegration and cleaning prestidigitation. I envision the Bloodstain Vale; perhaps filled with some sort of gore elementals originating from the discorporated remains of living things? ^,,,^ How about sub-garbage communities? If this plane is truly infinite, one would guess that those tunnels run deep. Are there any special sub-races that have developed on this plane? The mongrelfolk are an excellent match, but maybe a template could describe the "evolution" if you will, of new species more fit for the rot of the plane. An interesting fact that many of you may be unaware of is that burried trash is preserved perfectly. Only the garbage on the surface has the needed exposure to air, so digging is a great way to find non-rotting organic matter. A method to accelerate decomposition is to run airated water through the heaps of trash. This negates the situation that I just described, and causes a vastly increased rate of rotting, producing wonderful mulch. In actuality, given some care, this plane could become one of the most fertile in the multiverse. How's that for irony? |
| malykoth09-20-07, 01:09 PM | To those that complimented, thanks for the compliments! :D I had fun writing it...glad you enjoyed it! If anyone wants to add anything to it, please do...I'd love to see what other people come up with. |
| ArgulFraster09-20-07, 07:38 PM | Gore Elemental? Hmm. There was a monster by Vorpal Tribble called the Gratuitous Gore a while back...that might be a possibility. |
| stmaher09-21-07, 04:13 PM | You might want to consider posting that here: http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/DnD_Environments If you'd like to give it away that is. |
| ArgulFraster09-22-07, 01:14 PM | http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=13869010#post13869010 One Gratuitous Gore, as promised. |
| Japan_the_cougar09-24-07, 10:44 PM | Now, I love this concept, but I keep expecting an orange golem with the ability to turn into a motorcycle and a voice made of pop culture quotes to pop up and claim leadership. Now make it so, Number One! |
| Disciple_of_Salsa09-24-07, 11:20 PM | Cool Idea! The plane could be a finite sized planet, but the planet itself is a solid sphere of garbage. Trash builds up on its surface, so it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. The trash gets on the surface through periodical garbage "rainstorms", where trash falls from the sky. Older communities have been buried by trash and now live in a network of tunnels deep within the planet (kind of like the underdark). At the center of the planet resides some awesome quest objective for some epic characters. |
| locustechpriest09-25-07, 01:01 AM | This garbage plane seems... unnatural. Perhaps the core has some connection to it's beginnings. I like Neth, the living plane, so this might be an interesting extention. Perhaps magic is drawn to this core, some arcane reactor designed for unknowable and ineffable purposes. Cores are something that can be spectacular, that's for sure. |
| malykoth09-25-07, 11:22 AM | More features and entities: Geysers and Sinkholes*: When a location on another plane gains a massive amount of garbage, especially when the amount increases suddenly, it can have the effect of opening up a small, one way portal to the plane of Refuse. The vast majority of garbage that arrives in Refuse falls from the sky, but when such a portal opens, the trash shoots out of the ground in a great, smelly plume, arching dozens of feet into the air. These geysers don't happen often, but the average inhabitant will see one or two a week. Less frequent...perhaps encountered once every few months...is the reverse, a one way gate that opens out of the plane. The trash in an area suddenly implodes, often causing sinkholes. The displaced garbage then jets out into an existing trash heap somewhere on another plane. It appears that even living beings can be transported by one of these spontaneous trash-gates. Unfortunately, few indicators predict the appearance of either a geyser or a sinkhole. If a pattern exists, and if one could figure it out, they would gain a free way of traveling to other planes. * From an idea proposed by Rinian2 The Forest of Light: In a deep valley not far from the shores of the Sewage Sea sits an eerie "forest" of luminous fungi and lichen. The moist, hot air is thick with spores. Tribes of myconids choose to live just outside the forest, but treat it with an almost religious reverence. They strive to keep all non-myconids out of the forest, even using deadly force. Even if you could get past them, you should still consider carefully before entering....nearly every type of fungus, ooze and slime can be found here, in vast numbers. Etra Wilt-Blossom: A portly tiefling (with curling ram's horns and milky-grey eyes) that claims to have figured out the pattern of the sinkhole-portals. Her excavated cavern lies half way between Old Muck's mesa and Scraphaven. Inside, she has set up a bizarre orrery, and the torn and soiled sheets that cover each wall are scrawled with arcane formula and equations. She seems to be wrong more often than not, but the fact that she can predict any at all is an indication that she's on to something. Tinker's Damn: A bustling village of displaced tinker gnomes. They have a not-so-friendly rivalry with Boruk and Vod...in the past, open hostility has even occured, with both sides sending war constructs to battle it out in the no-man's-land between them. Each still accuses the other of espionage and sabatoge. Mayor-for-Life Gribblegrim Coal-Burner: The leader of Tinker's Damn...a bit of a tyrant, but also their finest artificer. He has recently figured out a way to capture and compress garbage elementals into fist-sized balls. With a command word, the ball will expand back to the normal elemental. The gnomes fling these with back-pack-catapults, circling any opponents in hostile forces. Jerath Redmar: More commonely known as "The Powder Man", this human ranger is one of the few who can make trips into the Forest of Light with little difficulty. He goes every few months to harvest fungus and spores. He sells these for any number of uses, the most profitable being a type of hallucinogenic called "dream powder", used by some as a recreational drug. He's thin and pastey-skinned, with thinning, long gray hair usually worn under a turban. Unknown to all, he has been infested by and fallen under the influence of a strange, fungal intelligence...and a new ingredient has recently been added to the dream powder. |

| Zousha_Omenohu09-25-07, 03:41 PM | How about this: A druid scavenges the place for bio-degradable materials to add to her compost pile, and she uses this to grow actual plants, which is now a small grove that she live in and protects. She allows people to visit and rest, but any littering sends her into an almost murderous frenzy! |

She allows people to visit and rest, but any littering sends her into an almost murderous frenzy! Possible, but I think it would have to be covered somehow. Remember the nasty storms and swarming vermin. Actually, having it inside a greenhouse would be pretty cool. The glass panes would be cracked and dirty on the outside, with quite a few boarded over or replaced with different types and colors of salvaged glass. Inside, though, it would be as pure, green and vibrant as one would want...I think it had better be hidden, too. Lots of folks would raid it just for the building materials and foodstuffs. Perhaps she has an alliance with certain other parties. For example, she could trade compost to myconids, or have the use of "shambling mulch mounds". |
| locustechpriest09-25-07, 07:10 PM | Malykoth, you mentioned "patterns" in the sinkhole appearances. Also, if there are regions of similar wastes (disintegration dust, caches of biological matter) rather than a random spread, this would imply some kind of control mechanism, wouldn't it? Otherwise it seems that there would be no pattern, or it would be dependent upon concentrations of reactive matter or ambient energies. Is it possible that this plane, or just this world within the plane, is an artifical world controlled from within by some artifact, intelligence, or civilization? @_@ I know I have mentioned something like this before, but it just seems more pertainent all of a sudden. ^_^ |
| malykoth09-25-07, 07:39 PM | I didn't think it that far through...I guess I was just using it as a plot device/story hook. Perhaps the tiefling is simply using a malfunctioning divination device, or is a good guesser? Indeed, perhaps there is no foreseeable pattern at all, and only divination/temporal magic has a chance of predicting the next garbage-geyser/sinkhole portal. I guess a DM could use any version, of course... ;) |
| Thrivol09-25-07, 07:51 PM | Heh. Can't believe this hasn't been posted. The Mountain of Pens- All worlds have a way of writing. Unfortunately, the instruments for writing always seem to disappear. For some reason, the plane of trash draws all writing utensils into it. These all converge upon the Mountain of Pens. A brave explorer could make a fortune by selling these pens, but unfortunately, a warforged artificer called the Lord of Ink traverses the mountain, making sure no one steals even a single pen. |
| Rinian209-25-07, 10:53 PM | Nice work malykoth. I'm thinking that a creature that did discover the way that the Sinkholes worked would be a heck of a nuisance because, whenever he wanted to go anywhere, there would be a huge surge in rubbish spontaneously created at his desired destination. Or would it be that rubbish would simply be gathered into a pile large enough to allow a Sinkhole to cross the boundaries between the two planes by the inhabitants of his destination without their knowing why? |
| malykoth09-25-07, 11:44 PM | Well, I didn't see Etra as conjuring the portals, so much as getting a glimpse at a sort of time table of potential sinkholes. It's luck of the draw to see if they go anywhere useful...or even safe. The destination point is always in an area of massive waste and decay (a landfill, large garbage scow, city dump, necropolis, etc.). I can't believe I'm put this much thought into this thing... I'm thinking of a war now, between a horde of goblins (a centipede worshiping cult that has come to the notice of an unknown demon lord) and a tribe of nezumi (Oriental Adventures ratkin). An old PC of mine would go well here, too... Cobweb: This attractive young dust genasi is the classic local girl makes good story. She grew up in the warrens of Scraphaven, and learned the craft of the rogue. Accidently falling into a sinkhole-portal one day, she found herself in the Outlands. Today, she's a infamous thief of rare gems and magical items. She's wanted in over half of the gatetowns for grand larceny, fraud, and resisting arrest. Rumor has it Cobweb keeps a cache of treasure in one of the dead magic zones back on Refuse. |
| Japan_the_cougar09-26-07, 03:48 PM | (a centipede worshiping cult that has come to the notice of an unknown demon lord) Obox-Ob. There, done. |
