| robot_flux10-22-07, 02:03 PM | Is there anyone to give me more lore about the troglodyte god Laogzed? So far I've searched through wikipedia and tried to google it as well, but all I have are these things: Laogzed - very disgusting looking toad-reptile mix clerics: * topaz-colored vestments & bone belts * sacred animal : toad * sacrifice : burnt human corpses The thing is, I am wanting to create a campaing built on the Norse pantheon (from Deities & Demigods) and make the nordic adventurers stumble upon a cavern with troglodytes worshipping their own god. Also, what is or would be the "holy" symbol of these troglodytes? The more lore I could get my hands on, the more I thank you guys! Robot Flux |

Monster Mythology only mentions further that it loves to eat, and will devour anything, including trogdolytes if they get in the way. It's symbol is a lizard's head. |

Could there be some relationship between Laogzed and the slaad (or slaadi..not sure about the pluralization, actually)? Or at least, between the grey/death slaad transformation and the troglodyte deity? Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the a grey basically disappear for a time, then come back transformed in a death slaad? Could they actually be actively seeking out Laogzed in the Abyss for some reason, and upon surviving (meaning they weren't immediately devoured), learn some dark knowledge that allows them to turn into a death slaad? Maybe they learn how to better control their hungers, changing them from being physical in nature to a hunger for power, or some such. It could go a long way in explaining why some death slaad end up evil. |
| ripvanwormer10-23-07, 06:11 PM | Ramenos (the bullywug god who also dwells in the Abyss) is a closer match (that is, he's more toadlike, while Laogzed is more of a lizard), and I think Orcus is more likely to be behind the death slaad taint (because of the death aspect; this is unsubstantiated, though). Ramenos is explicitly connected to the batrachi of Toril, who migrated to Limbo to become a race of slaad-like beings. A likely inspiration for Laogzed (and possibly Ramenos as well) is Clark Ashton Smith's version of Tsathoggua (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsathoggua). |
| Ornum10-24-07, 08:21 AM | Actually, reading that and some other stuff, Ramenos was, in fact, the one I was thinking about. Simply put, I'm an idiot. As far as Orcus is concerned, I really hate to attribute the death slaad to him. As it stands, when something happens in the Abyss, it's usually because of either Lolth, Orcus, Graz'zt, or Demogorgon. I'd just like to see some of the lesser known deities and abyssal lords get credit for something. |
