| Millenia05-26-07, 09:46 PM | It's... not really theological... >>a Though I think it'd think the person would just be bisected and die soon after... *Shrugs* |
| ripvanwormer05-26-07, 09:49 PM | Portals don't work that way. As soon as you touch them, you appear on the other side. There's no "halfway through." |
| JollyRotten05-26-07, 10:06 PM | Ok if they are cut in two do they go to heaven or hell or a neutral place (what about the body parts) hell easy heaven severed limbs??, or are they sucked one way or the other, Oh and for this question please pretend portals do work this way;) And these are planes of existence not places they exist in tandem of one another ie you can enter any plane from any part of the universe, so you may not be cut in half |
| Millennium05-26-07, 10:17 PM | Honestly, there are several ways to go with this: As soon as any part of you is in the portal, you instantly appear in the other side. In this case, you're in Celestia just before the portal closes, so there's no effect. You don't show up on the other side until you're all the way through the portal. In this case, you're shunted back to Baator. The portal functions like an ordinary doorway, and so you're cut in half when the portal closes. In this case, your soul goes to its normal afterlife. |

If portals did work that way (which they don't), our unlucky True Neutral character would die, and his soul would go to the Outlands, as this is the plane matching his alignment. What happens to his body parts? The same thing that happens to all severed body parts: they lie around and rot, whereever they happen to have fallen off. |

I thought I remembered reading about a Sigil NPC who was half a person who had been split in two in this manner, and ech half was simultaneously aware of what was happening the other half. Or something. I thought he was in one of the 2e books, but he might've been a homebrew NPC. Possibly from Planewalker.com... Eh. Oh well. I liked the idea of him. |

Yeah, that's Leyruss Arn, from Uncaged: Faces of Sigil. And I like the idea of him, too. Looking through The Planewalker's Handbook, portals did work that way in 2e. They don't work that way in 3e, though (my source here is The Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting: "Creatures who touch or pass through the area of the portal are instantly teleported to the locale the portal's builder has specified... It is not possible to poke one's head through a portal to see what's on the other side."). Sure, pick whatever way you like better. I had forgotten about Leyruss Arn. |
| mythSSK05-28-07, 04:52 AM | Sigh. I wish I was able to pick up actual copies of all the old 2e planescape books. I have all the pdf's, but it's just not the same. Sucks to have only gotten into the hobby when 3e was starting up and not knowing about all these great books that came out beforehand until it was far too late to find them any more. |
| sciborg205-28-07, 12:50 PM | You could try ebay if you want to spend more than 4 times their worth. |
| Theskippingman05-28-07, 06:06 PM | There's always the new free planewalker site, where these old themes are getting re-converted to 3.5e rules all the time. Or community.dicefreaks.com if you're seeking non-canonical excellence. Theskippingman |
| Phantom Llama05-28-07, 07:29 PM | DF is down right now though. Asmodeus is trying to suppress the information. |
| ArcTan05-28-07, 11:05 PM | Ring gates do still work this way. |
