| maddog071403-19-07, 06:58 AM | what prevents elves or humans on the prime plane from visiting elves that have passed on to arvandor all the time if they have planeshift ability? like teleporting to another kingdom and visiting a loved one? Would those souls have the same stats as they did in life? I've made a rule that when elves from the material plane enter Arvandor, every hour they must make a save or want to stay there forever. I don't know if there is some rule or reason they can't. It just seems strange they could go there and visit a soul that has passed on any time they want. It's as if they never died at all. |
| Dunamin03-19-07, 08:19 AM | What's the point? People don't remember their former identity after dieing, why would you try to track down your dead relative only to find a stranger? That must be a heartbreaking experience indeed... |
| Shemeska the Marauder03-19-07, 11:22 AM | There's nothing nominally preventing you from doing that, unless of course the petitioner of the relative you're visiting happens to be inside a deity's deific domain, rather than on the larger plane that domain is within. If they're inside the domain of a particular deity, that god can prevent anyone they want from waltzing in. However as Dunamin said, expect in exceptional circumstances, petitioners lack their memories of mortal life that might potentially hold them back in their goal of growing closer to their alignment or patron deity. You might visit them and find that they don't have a clue who you are, though they still have the same core personality, just no superfluous memories of mortality. |

It would seem strange to me, if you could simply cast scrying at your uncle paladin and get a picture of a lantern archon on Celestia (at the very least, the bonuses associated with relation to the subject would be diminished). I'd think you'd have to break out some of the more fancy divinations, if you want to efficiently track down petitioners, based on you having a relation to them in life (of course, it would still be easier than if you had no relation to them). And even if you do find them, as Shemmy pointed out, you're out of luck if they're in a divine realm or the realm of some planar lord who doesn't open his/her doors to all planewalking primes who happen to drop by. And there are also plenty other virtually inaccessible locations across the Planes, or simply ones that are too hostile for a poor mortal sod to visit. |
| ripvanwormer03-19-07, 05:13 PM | Would those souls have the same stats as they did in life? No. They lose all the class levels they had in life and gain the petitioner template. They may look completely different, depending on the plane they go to and the whims of their deities, if any. They won't remember much of their mortal lives, any more than living people remember what existence was like before they were born. |
