| WombleHunter02-11-08, 07:40 AM | I'm playing a high-level Greyhawk game and the party has recently encountered the works of Dalt, god of Keys (not to mention Mordenkainen). As I'm playing a Rogue I thought that this might be a cool god for him to start following. Sadly there isn't much information on him that I could find online and I don't have any Greyhawk sourcebooks - is there anything the mighty brains here can tell me? I'd much appreciate it :). |

It is said that is why he created his artifact key(s) and went on trying to find and release his imprisoned brother. He's originally mentioned in the module WG 5 Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure which presented the Maure Castle for the first time. That adventure also mentions the artifact the Silver Key of Dalt, which Mordenkainen carries. There's a Bronze Key of Dalt mentioned in the adventure Return of the Eight, hidden in Tenser's citadel. This could imply the existence of a Golden Key of Portals. There is more info on Dalt in The Scarlet Brotherhood I think he's also mentioned in WG6: Isle of the Ape. Perhaps the artifact is inspired by Lovecraft's The Silver Key. Rob Kuntz has mentioned having something interesting in mind for Dalt with future Maure Castle installments on the PPP boards: Link1 (http://p085.ezboard.com/References-in-the-original-Zayene-series/fpiedpiperpublishingfrm10.showMessage?to picID=13.topic) Link2 (http://p085.ezboard.com/Eightpointed-star-triangle-piece-found/fpiedpiperpublishingfrm35.showMessage?to picID=3.topic) |
| WombleHunter02-13-08, 08:06 AM | Good tips both, thanks. Hmm. Linking Dalt with Lovecraftian mythos makes him a little less down-to-earth than I would like. Which is a shame. (For note: In the game I mentioned in the OP, we have actually freed Vatun with a little aid from Dalt.) |

| WombleHunter02-17-08, 07:31 PM | We met up with Loji, the Great Bear, who was Vatun's favoured Chosen (Anarchic Paragon polar bear or somesuch), and allied with him. With his knowledge and our own we determined that the five Blades of Corusk are mountains, on which the seals to Vatun's prison were set (the bit about them being actual swords was a red herring). Through the use of powerful magic we also determined that Mephistopheles had had a hand in imprisoning Vatun, and that a unique Aspect of his along with some minions were his gaolers. Loji summoned the remaining few Chosen of Vatun to aid us and then broke the seals. We fell into the prison chamber; Vatun, bound by baatorian greensteel chains had had his heart ripped out and eaten, while pain devils chanelled lava into the wound to stop it closing. The Aspect of Mephistopheles - his femininity, in fact, carven of ice - was draining liquid pain from Vatun aided by her best Paeliryons. The entirety of the Arcane Order turned up, without our request, to help. They used Co-operative Metamagiced spells to blast the Aspect apart and a uniquely researched kind of dimensional lock to prevent it's essence leaving the plane. We had the key to Vatun's chains from bargaining with the mightiest frost giant hero who had ever lived, a demigod who wanted his artefact axe back (and which we had, after it had been stolen from him by the greatest treasure hunter that there ever was, who we defeated in combat). We freed Vatun. The Arcane Order are an order of mages based around sharing magic via a Spellpool. They had brought the actual pool with them, in the form of a great leaden coffin - turned out Dalt himself had founded the Order and temporarily sacrificed a divine rank to power the Spellpool, waiting for this day - the essence of Mephistopheles' Avatar was placed inside in his stead. We just broke 20th level. |
