What deities can we expect to see back in 4ed, and how will the multiverse change? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hey guys.

Since 4th Edition is right around the corner I am wondering what changes might happen to the D&D multiverse and it's many deities. I'm most interested in which deities/pantheons we are likely to see erased from continuity, and what kind of new deities we might see.

I am also curious about how Wizards might rework each settings' planes, and how they will make the different setting relate to each other.

Also, is there any chance we might see older deities from older D&D editions return? Deities like the former AD&D2 Animal Lords would be great to see again. Some others I would like to see come back are Zuoken, Amaunator, and Sardior.

Zuoken is in the Expanded Psionics Handbook.

Amaunator is dead, and back in the form of Lathander. There's options for his clerics in Lost Empires of Faerun.

Sardior only exists in one Dragon article and a couple of Mind's Eyes. WotC doesn't seem to like psionics, so I doubt he'll see the light of day.

I doubt that they'll do away with any of the gods (And they certainly won't change Pelor's alignment), even though they say that the edition will be completely setting-neutral. In fact, I hope they recognize more pantheons in their next Deities and Demigods, like the Celtic, Aztec, Hindu and Japanese pantheons.

But didn't Zuoken mysteriously disappear? Probably imprisoned somewhere?

As for Amaunator, it is believed by some that he is Lathander, but there are other possibilities.

Zuoken was imprisoned beneath Castle Greyhawk, and is officially freed at the end of Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk.

From the Wizards R&D seminar, posted by an attendee (

"Greyhawk will not be default setting in core
We want to leverage the assets of the assumed parts of a D&D world – Mordenkainen, Bigby, Vecna, Lolth, Tiamat, Asmodeus, etc. However, we also want to call upon the great mythology that is more commonly known such as Thor, etc."

I want Tiamat and Bahamut to gain higher status in the pantheon. With the dragonfall war going on they should gain more followers and since Tiamat is playing a huge roll in whats going on in Chessenta/Unther she should get boosted.:)

Asmodeus is killed by one of his pit fiend generals, Necros. Necros marries Tiamat and between them is born Sorcen. Sorcen deposes both parents and becomes ruler of Baator. Tiamat sits in the Shadow Dimension and seeks revenge against her son. Sorcen makes moves against the gods and discreetly kills a few of them off in his ongoing conquest of everything and his ultimate plan to destroy all the gods is slowly realized. :P

Seriously though, I imagine they may flesh out the mindflayers story a bit more.

With the abyssal and infernal lords being in the pathetic line, they'll be killed by their low grade soldiers/slaves. Their death will desorter the balance of their plane and destroy the 'evil' element in DnD.

As an series of explosion, it'll weaken significantly the evil gods and the good ones will get rid of them without problems. Though, since only the good ones will remain, they'll be the only element of it, and thus, become neutral and merge into the planes. After some times, they'll simply stop to exist and they'll be forgotten.

In short: No gods in 4e. What the heck were you thinking ?

i would rather ignore something like the hindu pantheon and replace it with FR.

Why? I think it is a valid subject, why close the thread?

Because the 4E board has a monopoly on all 4E threads.
