| kronas03-01-07, 08:33 PM | I am making a world, and want to include some gods. I don't know which ones to include, I am thinking that I should include a god that is the creator of a different race. Then like a god of the different elements, like fire god, ice god, etc. What other types of gods should I include? Death? High Lord of Evil? What? |
| RavenGraygem03-01-07, 10:27 PM | I definitely suggest finding a copy of Deities and Demigods, if you don't already have it. It has quite a bit of useful advice on the subject. But since I'm guessing that you either don't have it or can't get easy/immediate access to a copy, here goes: 1 Each particular race should have at least one racial deity. You don't need to give each subrace its own deity unless it's fairly different from the rest (for example, dark elves have Lolth, and the rest have Corellon whatever-his-name-is). 2 You should a deity for each aligment component; lawful, chaotic, neutral, good, and evil. You can often mix and match here, like a chaotic good or lawful evil deity. Of course, each deity should have the domains that match its aligment component(s). 3 A deity for each of the four elements. 4 At least one deity for each of the following: Magic, Death (and possibly undeath), War, Knowledge, Creation (smithing and the like), and Nature. Of course, you can mix and match these. For example, one deity could be in charge of Earth, Nature, and Good. Another could be in charge of Law, War, and Fire. Use the deities given in the PHB as examples of this. Hope that helps somewhat. |
| alchemyprime03-01-07, 11:23 PM | The most important bit: Every character should have at least 1 god to follow. Let's use character types as an example. Elves: Elves would need a racial deity. It should be CG or NG. Maybe CN, but that might be stretching it. He should have a little combat, magic and nature mixed until smooth. Dwarves: Dwarves should have a LG or LN deity of forge, war and earth. Simple. Halflings: Halflings can either have a LG deity of valor and honor, a NG deity of helping everyone, or a N deity of looking out for #1 and diplomacy. Let's make 2: the LG and the N. Half-orcs: A war-ish deity is best, with a Chaotic alignment. CN and CE are good choices. Gnomes: Gnomes need to be inventive and tricky. A deity of artifice, magic, knowledge and trickery is best. Also, good should be in his alignment. Half-elves: treat as elves or humans. Martial characters: This one is interesting, because we have a Lawful good only class (paladin), a Non-lawful only class (barbarian), and two any alignment classes (ranger and fighter). Let's make a LG deity of Honor and Valor, a CN deity of Beasts and fury and a NE deity of murder and slaughter, but also control. Arcane characters: A N deity of knowledge fits very well here. Let us also include a NG deity of helping with magic, and a NE deity of necromancy and harmful magics. Rogues: This also includes bards. Let's use a LE deity, a NG deity, and a CN deity. The LE one should be of assassins, expertise, and discipline. The NG should be a Robin Hood-esque person. He'll be a deity of theivery and goodwill. The CN should be a deity of Narcisism and Good Times. Divine characters: Clerics are easy. They choose anyone. Druids are harder. Let's make a deity of nature that's N. Also, a NE deity of beasts and dinosaurs, and a CG deity of weather and hunting. This allows for all druids, and also for all rangers except LG to have a nature deity. Let's make LG rangers more paladinic. Regular Joes: The NPCs, the everyman. Why would he follow our deity of theives, when he can follow a deity of healing or love? So, we want a NG healing deity of the hearth, a CG love deity who is also the moon, a LG community deity who is also the sun, a LN war deity, a N deity of money, a CN deity of harvest. We also want a deity of death, so let's make three N ones. The Hunter: He finds those who are about to die. His clerics will tend more to NE, as he takes up those who die painfully. The Maiden: She helps lead you to the Buaracracy. Her clergy is based more on NG than N, but the occasional NE gets in. Lets have all but her NE clergy turn undead, instead of rebuke. The Judge: His clergy is more LN, but also tends to have CN members. Lets make him also a deity of Fire and Water. Those who were evil will be "fired" before being sent off, and the good will be annointed. Those who are neither will just be sent on their way. So far, the pantheon looks like this: Elf God: CG, Chaos, Magic, Strength, Good Dwarf God: LG, Law, Good, War, Earth Gnome God: NG, Good, Trickery, Knowledge, Magic Halfling God: N, Trickery, Darkness, Charm, Luck, Knowledge Halfling Goddess: LG, Law, Good, Luck, Sun Orc God: CN, Chaos, Destruction, War, Strength Valor God: LG, Law, Good, Strength War Beast God: CN, Chaos, Passion, Animal, Strength Murder God: NE, Evil, Strength, Destruction, Luck Knowledge God: N, Knowledge, Magic, Trickery (okay, so it's Boccob.) | navar10003-02-07, 02:06 AM | Make a racial god for humans. There's never a racial god for humans. Not even Wastri, since he likes amphibians too. |
| sciborg203-02-07, 02:20 AM | Deities and Demigods is useful, but so is a look at Godchecker (http://www.godchecker.com/)and SacredTexts (http://www.sacred-texts.com/index.htm). I spent a lot of time on these sites when I was trying to flesh out pantheons for a lot mythologies. Also look at the Malazan (https://starvalddemelain.pbwiki.com/Ascendants%20and%20Religion)world and its interesting notion of Houses (House Light/Dark/Death/Life/etc) Sadly sacredtexts may go offline soon....thankfully I bought a CD - For the major texts of about every faith in human history one of the better uses of $50... Check out the FAQ (its in the board stick) there were lots of write ups of lots of gods. |
| Witch03-02-07, 02:23 AM | Make a racial god for humans. There's never a racial god for humans. Not even Wastri, since he likes amphibians too. They've got Zarus. Okay, that's not a compliment, but they do have him. |
