| thorr_kan08-29-07, 02:50 PM | I've been doing some campaign planning, and I'm pondering the Plane of Shadow. Here we have dark reflection of the world, cloaked in gloom and darkness. What would you consider the thematic opposite the Plane of Shadow? |
| TurnCloak_Kobold08-29-07, 03:00 PM | the oposite is simple, its literally the material plane. dont be fooled, its easy to fall into the rut that the positive energy plane is the oposite, but its the material plane. check the tome of magic for reference, they have an entire section about it. but the oposite is the material plane. i like the idea, the shadow plane is great, everyone on the material plane has a oposite that lives in the shadow plane. and who knows, maybe one of those shadow selves wants to go replace his material self, just to feel the sun on his face. see, dosent even have to be an evil campaign. |
| lint trap08-29-07, 03:25 PM | Back in the day, the Demiplane of Shadow was sort of a mid-point between the Positive and Negative Energy Planes. Now that it's full-fledged, it doesn't have a core opposite. Dragon #321 details the Plane of Radiance, though; that might be a good piece to use for the sake of contrast. |
| TurnCloak_Kobold08-29-07, 03:28 PM | true, i supose that would make a bit of sense wouldent it. it makes sense that if theres a shadow dragon, and a radiant dragon, amd theres a shadow plane, that there should be a radiant plane, though it comes off that apparently that radiant dragon is from celestia, which is a shrugging point for me. |
| Return of the Flumph08-29-07, 03:52 PM | The opposite of the Plant of Shadow is the Fungus of Light. |
| hazhar08-29-07, 04:15 PM | In my setting the Plane of Shadow in it's original conception doesn't exist per say; but there is something similar that has pretty much the same feel, and it's a coterminous/coexistent plane only accessable from the Underdark. It occupies the same place that the Ethereal Plane does for the surface world, making them opposites. The difference is thematic: Viewed from the Ethereal Plane the Material world is a fuzzy, colorful yet indistinct place, shifting in and out of view; wheras from the Shadow Plane the world is bled of all color and brought into sharp sobering contrast. If ones wants to travel further, into the "deep shadow" or "deep ethereal", the planes become more and more negatively and positively aligned respectively and eventually become the opposing planes of Negative and Positive Energy. |
| Shemeska the Marauder08-29-07, 04:50 PM | The Plane of Shadow is a dark, twisted mirror of the Prime Material. FWIW, the "plane of radiance" that appeared in Dragon 321 doesn't have any real precident or role in the D&D cosmology, so it doesn't thematically mesh easily with the other planes that coexist and developed alongside one another (though I suppose it might work as an odd, rainbow'tastic demiplane). Also, that plane in Dragon 321 while sharing portions of a name, has no link to the actual quasielemental plane of radiance (the border region between the Elemental Plane of Fire and the Positive Energy Plane). |
| thorr_kan08-29-07, 04:58 PM | The opposite of the Plant of Shadow is the Fungus of Light. You've got a point. (I proofed the post twice!...but forgot the subject.) |
| Rinian208-30-07, 07:37 AM | I remember that in one of the recent Dragon magazines (RIP) there were details of the Plane of Radiance. Of course, since I remember neither actual details nor the issue number this post may not be as helpful as it could be. Sorry. :) |
| setekh08-30-07, 11:46 AM | Theres also a Plane of mirrors mentioned in Fiend Folio under the... Nerra. |
| lint trap08-30-07, 03:26 PM | FWIW, the "plane of radiance" that appeared in Dragon 321 doesn't have any real precident or role in the D&D cosmology, so it doesn't thematically mesh easily with the other planes that coexist and developed alongside one another (though I suppose it might work as an odd, rainbow'tastic demiplane). Yeah, it did seem a bit forced, but I ended up using it as a transitive demiplane, as sort of a Bifrost to Ysgard's Yggdrasil. So it doesn't have the symmetry of the more "standard" planes, but it's still a useful and interesting place to pass through. |
| Rinian208-30-07, 07:09 PM | FWIW, the "plane of radiance" that appeared in Dragon 321Huh. I missed that post completely.Of course, since I remember neither actual details nor the issue number this post may not be as helpful as it could be.How embarrassingly correct. |
| thorr_kan08-30-07, 10:27 PM | Thanks for all the input folks. I really think Ethereal is the way to go. But I'm going to divorce the Ethereal and Shadow planes from the Energy planes. Too much baggage there, I think. |
| Rogue Shadows08-31-07, 10:05 AM | I've always thought that the Shadow, Astral, and Ethereal planes formed a sort of triumvirate. Like, there's no actual opposite. |
