Hey guys.

I remember reading something a while back which briefly mentioned a cat deity named "The Cat Lord", or something like it. Sadly, I don't remember where I read this, or where I can find more information on this feline deity, so I'm hoping you guys can help me track him down.

And if there are any other feline deities please tell me their names, and where I can find them.

Thanks in advance for any help.

"The Cat Lord" is back in the 1st ed MMII, but I'm not certain what book he's been reprinted/updated in.

If you want the fairytale on which he's based, just do a search for "The King of the Cats" and you should find it.

The Cat Lord in the 1st ed book is deceased, murdered by Malar. His female successor is found in the 2nd ed Planescape Monstrous Compendium I, with other mentions in some of the other Planescape material. TWhat happened to the previous Cat Lord is found in the Planescape adventure Something Wild, where his successor is also encountered. She doesn't know what happened to the old Cat Lord, but is wrongly suspected by the other Animal Lords of having taken the position by foul play.

Damn, this is really disappointing for me.

Does all the D&D canon cross over from all the previous versions (1st ed, Basic, AD&D, AD&D2, etc) to the current 3.0 and 3.5 games, or is it as though neither of the Cat Lords existed in the current settings? If they don't exist, could I just bring an old copy of the 1st ed MMII and have my DM introduce him, without worrying about the 2nd ed material?

Isn't there a D20 version of Stormbringer? I faintly remember reading it.

If there is, you will find the Cat Lord description in there.

3.0 stats for Cat Lord can be found in the Epic Handbook. Cat Lord is only a rank 0 quasi-deity.

Also, during game on Friday, Cat Lord was finally defeated by Rat Lord. :P

The Cat Lord in the 1st ed book is deceased, murdered by Malar.

Technically, we don't know that.

All we know is that a previous male Cat Lord of the Beastlands was murdered by Malar. We don't know that this was the one from the 1st edition Monster Manual II. Since neither cat lord has been given a proper name, it's impossible to make a definite identification.

In fact, the MMII one was updated for the Epic Level Handbook, as others have pointed out, so he's still around in 3e.

It's not completely clear that the MMII Cat Lord has anything to do with the Beastlands. They could be completely different beings. The MMII one - who Gary Gygax's 3rd-party novels called Rexfelis - is different in many ways. The Beastlands aren't even mentioned in the MMII description. Or perhaps it worked like this:

1. 1e Catlord ruled cats from the Beastlands, but quit in order to become the lover of Xan Yae, wanders the multiverse.

2. Another male catlord takes over.

3. This male catlord was killed by Malar, and is replaced by a female catlord.

On the other hand:

Damn, this is really disappointing for me.

Does all the D&D canon cross over from all the previous versions (1st ed, Basic, AD&D, AD&D2, etc) to the current 3.0 and 3.5 games, or is it as though neither of the Cat Lords existed in the current settings? If they don't exist, could I just bring an old copy of the 1st ed MMII and have my DM introduce him, without worrying about the 2nd ed material?

1. Why would this be disappointing? Why is a female Cat Lord disappointing but a male Cat Lord awesome?

2. Basic D&D canon doesn't usually cross over between editions (since it's a completely different game), but AD&D1-AD&D2 canon does unless something says otherwise. 1st edition = AD&D. The original D&D is never called 1st edition.

3. Of course your DM can introduce whatever he or she wants. It's not WotC's game; the game belongs to whoever is running it and plays it. I'm offended by the notion that you somehow need to conform to canon if you don't want to.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to spay/neuter your catgirls (http://somethingpositive.net/arch/sp01192004.gif).

Aren't there animal lord prestige classes as well?

There were other animal lords in 2e. There was a Wolf Lord, a Lizard Lord, a Hawk Lord, and rumors of a Dinosaur Lord, for example. It's implied that there was a lord for every nonmagical species (though all dinosaurs may have had to share one, on account of being almost extinct).

It's not a prestige class, to my knowledge.

Oh, and I forgot this:

And if there are any other feline deities please tell me their names, and where I can find them.

The Cat Lord isn't really a deity, but more of a planar ruler, roughly on par with Abyssal lords. He or she does has mortal cultists, though (for example, the Cult of the Beast in the Forgotten Realms campaign sometimes worships the Cat Lord).

For feline deities, I'd direct you to Bast (found in Deities & Demigods and Faiths and Pantheons in 3e; also known as Sharess) or Nobanion (found in Faiths and Pantheons). Malar (from the Forgotten Realms setting) is sort of feline as well. You might even interpret Karaan from the Book of Vile Darkness as feline, seeing as he's basically just a renamed Malar.

There's also Red Tiger from The Savage Frontier, page 11, which you can download from here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads).

Other feline deities from the Gods_list.pdf (http://planewalker.com/downloads/godslist/godList.php):

Meerclar
Demigoddess
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Portfolio: Felines
Sources: Deities & Demigods (First Edition), Dragon magazine #54 - "Down-to-earth divinity"

Meerclar is also the Stormbringer/Elric!/Dragonlords of Melnibone deity Fabius mentioned.

Water Lion
Lesser deity
Alignment: Neutral (Neutral Good)
Portfolio: Unknown, but hates sharks
Sources: Monster Mythology, On Hallowed Ground

Water Lion appears as a lion with a fish's tail, made completely of water.

Ferrix
Lesser deity
Alignment: Neutral
Portfolio: curiosity, Hunting, play (goddess of weretigers)
Sources: Monster Mythology, On Hallowed Ground, Warriors of Heaven

And, as always, with your DM's permission you can always invent a feline deity if none of the existing ones suit your fancy. The game's meant to be creative/collaborative, not just about basing everything on official sourcebooks.

Bast and Sehkmet from Egyptian Mythology.

Bast being a goddess of love and cats.

Sehkmet being a lion goddess of war.

Which, it's worth pointing out, have nothing to do with any of the Cat Lords being discussed.

Does anyone other than the Cult of the Beast and the Tibbits worship the Cat Lord?
