any theories...all welcome since Gygax has said he will never give details...

here was our past discussion:

Is that all? Gygax hasn't dropped any hints or anything on the boards?

Anyway, since they were associated with Archeron in that thread, I've come up with an idea: Massive, angelic figures made of the black ice of Ocanthus. Extremely powerful, the tremors of those who still barely live shatter the massive sheet of ice they are imprisoned in create the storms of ice in Archeron's lower levels.

To be honest, I could care less about them given that they're from gygax's novels and nowhere else, and the cosmology from his novels usually has only a passing resemblance to that developed in D&D as a whole after he left TSR. But beyond the source, let's be honest: a lot of gygax's hinted at and promised material is vaporware (30 years on and we're still waiting for Castle Grayhawk) and I wouldn't get excited about it showing up.

Does he have a reason for not describing them?

As for Acheron's natives, I've gone with the Hassitor in my own games.

I like that. Titanic beings made of black ice.....perhaps like Xixecal....an entire race of abominations? Hmmmmmm....

What's this about?

Shemmy, I don't know if he had a definite reason, just something he brought up in one of his novels.

Who are these blokes again?

Who are these blokes again?

Planes of Law mentions an extinct race known as the hassitor who constructed massive mobile/living fortresses of iron, ice, and undead flesh. The hassitor are gone, but a number of their fortresses, known as hassitorium, still exist in the hands of new owners.

One of those fortresses shows up in the hands of an exiled Rakshasa noble in my current campaign/second storyhour.

What's this about?

We never got much on the layout of the famed first dungeon of D&D, I believe. Talked about for a while, I'm guessing.

And we should listen to a Gary Gygax novel? It may be an interesting creative study, but that's because he does some wierd stuff.

I think the reality is that Gygax had no clue what they were and never got around to developing them. It has whetted my curiousity as one of the planar mysteries of old when I felt Gygax actually had something in mind...

As someone who knows almost nihil about Gygax or his work, could someone fill me in on the basics where maelvi are referenced (and how come they're a mystery otherwise)?

It's from his Gord novels, I can't recall the exact place and there isn't anything more than that. They existed and now don't, were apparently from Acheron. Some guy has been trying to get Gary to give out some info for the last ten years...

This link http://home.comcast.net/~chris.s/outer.html says they can be found in the 1e MM II but I really don't recall seeing them there.

Edit: Nope, not there. But the dreaded nature of the vegepygmy is brought to light :D
