| SSj3goblin03-18-07, 02:49 PM | This god is mentioned both in MMIV and LoM and seems to have a long backstory that's eluding me. Who is he? Also, I saw some people theorize on the Eberron boards that Eberron was the prison of Tharizdun, and I'm curious about that theory too. |
| Doom_Linnorm03-18-07, 02:58 PM | I'm no expert but I think he is an evil elemental god that was sealed away. You'll have to rely on other board members to tell you more, but now you atleast know his general nature. |

Well I know, from MMIV, that he IS NOT an evil elemental god but posing as one, to get archomentals behind him. |
| Ozzymandias03-18-07, 03:28 PM | Warning: Spoiler information to follow. Tharizdun was featured in one major adventure/campaign scenario back in the day (way before my time, but I've done a little bit of research). I'm not sure if it was 1st or 2nd edition; regardless, the product was titled The Temple of Elemental Evil. Or maybe I'm getting the details mixed up. I know that, in the original, Zugtmoy was the primary antagonist behind the Temple; her plan was to create an elite force of elemental priests by culling the weak, and then launching an attack on the World of Greyhawk. Needless to say, she failed, and was locked away in the lower depths of the temple. In Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil (3.0 printing, '99 or 2000), a new cult starts up the process all over again, only this time the head priests are worshipers of Tharizdun. He's a deity of entropy and destruction, who was locked away in a divine prison of sorts by the other gods. Legend states that if he's freed, he'll bring about the end of all existence. Actually, now that I think of it, I'm really not sure where he comes from before that. I'm certain there must be some more history to the guy; perhaps someone else on the boards will be more helpful than myself. |
| SALDAR03-18-07, 03:53 PM | A 1st edition module called Lost Temple of Tharizdun was the first published info I am aware of (I bought it new and yes, I still have it). Tharizdun is a god of entropy and insanity. He was sealed away by the other gods in an extradimensional prison ages ago, but the prison is slowly weakening. Thus allowing his clergy some access to him. In The Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil (3.0) his clerics are once again trying to free him. Since he is the god of entropy and insanity his clergy become more and more insane and actually look forward to the end of existence for all things. Beyond that, you really don't WANT to know more. Or do you? You know, reality is but an illusion perpetrated by the other gods in order to cover up the truth that all things come to the glorious oblivion of nothingness. |
| Shemeska the Marauder03-18-07, 08:40 PM | Tharizdun's prison (the Demiplane of Imprisonment) is described in Dragon 353 in the article "Multiple Dementia". Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil is one of the major sources on him, as well as some bits in the 2e Guide to the Ethereal, On Hallowed Ground, and a brief writeup of Tharizdun as a deity in an issue of Dragon a few years back (still very brief, and gave a deific rundown on his power while still imprisoned). There are hints on him as the Elder Elemental God in 'The Inner Planes', 'PSMC III', and in the recent Archomental articles in Dragon magazine as well. |
