Why no deities with prestige classes? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Looking through my books, it seems to me that every single god and goddess has strictly vasic classes, with not a prestige class among them.

Does anyone have any idea why?

And would putting a prestige class on a new deity seem out of whack?

It's because when the books were made, they could only use material from the Core books. (PHB, DMG, MM, and D&DG for Deities and Demigods; the same plus the FRCS and F&P for Faiths and Pantheons). Nowdays, they're less restrictive like that, but there's been no new gods. Check out Dicefreaks, they use PrCs aplenty for their gods.

Well, some of the gods of the Forgotten Realms (Faiths and Pantheons I believe) have PrC. Mystra and Azuth have levels in Archmage and Bane in Blackguard for exemple.

But it is said in Deities and Demi Gods that you can add classes or levels to the gods so they can fit your campaing. Boccob and Vecna both need the Archmage PrC badly. The rest is all up to you. How Big and Bad do you want them? And with Epic levels, gods should just be ridiculusly fun :D.

My pantheon has Prestige classes out the wazzoo, especially with Deity power being increased somewhat (Greater deities get 60 Class levels + 20 outsider HD)

Also, bear in mind that many prestige classes are in some way tied in with either a god, a mortal organization or both. It wouldn't make much sense for a god to be a divine champion of themselves, or to belong to the Harpers, for instance.

Wait a Second:

Hades: Fighter 20/Rogue 10/ Assassin 10
It's not completely true, and there's no reason why they couldn't get those classes, with the possible exception of flavor (Consider a Deity with ranks of Asmodeus' Thrall. Doesn't work)

Dicefreaks' Zuoken is a Monk20/Fist(of Zuoken)20, and at least one version of Kord has levels in Mighty Contender (of Kord). I find both quite sensible.

Assassin levels are pretty common. F&P deities also sometimes have levels in archmage, blackguard, shadowdancer etc.

Savras should really be a Loremaster.
In fact, he's perhaps already one, I just don't know.

Thanks...there's enough examples from various sources that, when I stat up Saoirse, Goddess of Freedom, I'll feel more comfortable including a prestige class or two.
