So, let's say you somehow find out the standard D&D cosmology, astoundingly, is a perfectly accurate representation of cosmic reality. You're now concerned about your own afterlife. Where then would you spending your life living in accordance with the ideals of in order to enter in when you die? Personally, I would find Elysium, the Beastlands, or Bytopia (in that order) to be a great place to spend eternity, particularly because I suppose I'm a romantic, naturist type. However, despite Elysium being the land of eternal bliss, I'm sure some folk here would rather spend all of time hanging out someplace else on the planes. So what are your top choice(s) and why?

Wherever I stay, I'd like an ocean view. Maybe Ossa. I'm not really CG, though, so I think I might be in the Outlands, either near Sylvania or Faunel, or somewhere there that gets lots of snow, preferably. With a big isolated estate.

Maybe I'd become a Rilmani. That'd never get boring.

Wouldn't spending an eternity anywhere be a horrible experience? But I guess eternity is what we're stuck with. I'd choose any good plane.
Perhaps somewhere Chaotic?

I would say Ysgard for me.

A library containing all the knowledge of the multiverse in the style of Roman villa located overlooking a SouthSea island type beach. Cabana boys always there to supply rubdowns and vodka tonics... aaaah heaven...

Easy pick for me... Lunia, the first layer of Celestia.

A nice urban environment, basking in eternal moonlight with an ocean view on one side and a mountain view on the other side, with all nice people and no pesky chaotic idiots allowed.

What more could one wish for?

Thoth's Library.

As long as I had a place in Elysium, or in the Outlands rather close to Elysium.

I should rather die in the material plane. It would be completely useless if I lived afterlife in anywhere. I mean, what's the use? And also, what challenge? Maybe it would be better to be torturing myself during afterlife in the Plane of Torturing Myself (which one is that? Sorry, I forgot)

and no pesky chaotic idiots allowed.

Please, no indirectly bashing other people's alignments in my thread. We can talk about what we would like without being down on others. If my thread about paradise turns into a flame war I shall be sad. :( :P

Well...a plane is a pretty big place as is my understanding. At least, I would consider infinite size rather large. It's not like you are spending eternity in on a small island you are trapped on. Also, you have to consider that some of them time moves slowly or not at all, so you probably would not feel the mortal sensation of 'boredom'.

Probably Bytopia for me, just lawful of good, nice locals, interesting scenery...
Not sure if I would prefer Dothion or Shurrock though, well, I have eternity, I guess I can split my time evenly between the two...

I'm not a big warrior, but if the opportunity presented itself then definitely Ysgard. Get into fights, drink and generally misbehave as much as you like so long as its heroic, and even if you die, you wake up the next day. Terrible if you want to hang on to your stuff, but thats a chaotic plane for ya.

Why spend eternity anywhere unless alive and capable of doing things? If I am dead I cannot do anything useful for anyone and I would rather be back alive again. If not, is better for being dead and no afterlifes.

Also if knowing this would be possible to figure out unknown questions in physics and cosmology, using equasions and stuff, possibly also religious stuff, and also other stuff as well.

Any of the Celestial Planes would be paradise to me, as long as those I care about are there to enjoy it with me.

But I admit that the 7 mounting Heavens appeal to me. A perfected place where universal love, friendship, order exist to the Benefit of all. after years of toil, doubt, hardship, etc. You find yourself in that perfect place under the stars where the best part is yet to come: Everything in it's proper place, contemplation, order that breeds hapinness, closeness to the all-perfection of the universe.

Yet, stick me in the 7 mounting heavens...

The Outlands. I'd get a library card at Boccob's Public Library. I'm sure that'll keep my occupied for a long time. I could also hang out in Obad-Hai's National Park if I feel like just relaxing. And if I feel like a change of scenery, there are the portal towns to visit.

Balance in all things.

I'm the petitioner from wherever that says, screw these burgs, I'm going to Sigil. Rent a nice flat in the Lower Ward and join the Bleakers, that's what I'd do.

Although I'm more neutral in nature, the Abyss or Hell seems interesting.
Well, anywhere with lots of fire, lava, succubus (or anything similar) that look like that (http://www.larryelmore.com/images/everquest/EQ%201st%20Omens%20of%20War.jpg) (end right of the image, although, with a face a bit more 'evil' and 'creature', if you understand what I mean), a large library (if hell/paradise exist, then other plane/creatures do, better read about them.. and magic learning ? Sure.) and lots of good peoples/paladins to smash constantly.

Hmm. If I had a choice, there are a few things that seem nearly equally appealing to me. First, if there's anyway I could become an eladrin, that's what I'd do. I know they're not generally made out of petitioners, but I think maybe if I performed some great service for Arborea and/or CG Morwel might be able to make me one as thanks. Secondly, being an einherjar in the service of the Norse gods would be awesome. Failing either of those, I could likely be happy as a petitioner on either Arborea or Ysgard.

07-30-07, 02:20 PM
Wait... Do we all start as petitioners? That might change what I decide! ;)

If I'm not a petitioner, and will actually spend eternity with a high chance of not being eaten of destroyed somehow... I'd like the Abyss! You've gotta love infinite variety! Not to mention all the different types of evils to amuse you.

Then again, I'm probably Neutral Good, Lawful Neutral, or Lawful Evil... But of those, I'd think Mechanus is probably the least varied of the planes, but Baator or Archeron seem to have nice atmospheres about them. On one hand you have the Archdevils taking part in an endless war, and those sexy Erinyes, Fierna, and Glasya... Not to mention the limited variety in the infinite planes. But as for Acheron you have never-ending conflicts and wars taking place along massive cubes for all time! Sorta like a more gritty, awesome Ysgard!

If I was to be a petitioner though, I'd probably want to go to Acheron. Maybe Carceri's outer planes, but I wouldn't like the natives.

I'd want to spend eternity in a planar metropolis similar to Sigil, where all the alignments are welcome, and anything can happen. Then I'd spend my days playing Monopoly and Battleship with a Hound Archon, a Barb Devil, and a Goblin named Scrag.

07-30-07, 05:53 PM
Probably Elysium, Amora layer, everything is good and fun and pesky adventurers don't want to come there as they'll be entrapped!

Plus I won't be tortured like the petitionners of evil aligned planes. That has to count for _something_.

Sigil. Or the Positive Energy Plane. (Wouldn't that be fun for something that couldn't die?!)

07-30-07, 11:29 PM
Beastlands. Lots of natural splendor, talking critters, varied environment[ though I don't know if it has oceans....],etc.

Assuming I am not a petitioner[ and therefore likely to turn into an animal], I'd build a little log cabin and plant a garden in a forest clearing. Then I'd make friends with the talking beasts. Books I suppose I could get from someplace else, assuming a little planewalking is allowed. Or maybe I can talk someone into bringing them to me.

Failing that, I'd choose Bytopia. No talking animals, but on the other hand, it does have the nicer parts of civilization [pubs, social gatherings in town, etc.] without the bad stuff[much crime, overcrowding, etc].

07-30-07, 11:41 PM
Either Sigel or the Outlands, for many of the reasons discussed above. I thrive on information and new experiences but I prefer not to be tortured endlessly (the Abyss, while infinitely varied, is not so cool for me). So Sigil'd give me the greatest chance at meeting new people and learning new things, what with all the interplanar traffic going through there. And then I could in theory get anywhere I wanted from there, given the right portals and keys.

Alternatively, I'd like somehow to be reborn as a Githzerai on Limbo. that'd be an interesting life... I'd finally get some time to contemplate, and the idea of living on a plane directly shaped by thought is intriguing.

I'd like to live on Celestia (I am true neutral with lawful good tendencies), but Ysgard sounds like sooooo much fun. If I could go there for a few days whenever I felt like hardcore fighting and screwing, but spend most of the time on Celestia, that would be awesome.

Eventually I might evolve into an archon, which would be even more awesome.

I would have to go with Blessed Fields of Elysium, no worries, no cares, no boredom, just an afterlife of eternal bliss stretching out for all time. I would hope to earn a place among the islands of Thasasia to build a beautiful house, find a kinderd soul and enjoy the warm ocean air for the rest of time.

If not there then I suppose I would go to the Karasuthra layer of the Wilderness of the Beastlands and spend my afterlife in an endless hunt beneath the pale moonlight.

07-31-07, 03:45 AM
I would wish to spend my eternity in The Clockwork Nirvana of Mechanus or in The Blessed Fields of Elysium, in the layer of Amoria. Or perhaps the plane of shadow. This plane is deadly, dark, and deep. Grr... I've begun to forget Frost's poetry. Darn.:pbbbtt:

07-31-07, 04:54 AM
Hmm... I get bored of the same old thing pretty fast (which is odd for someone who is probably best described as Lawful Neutral) so it would be really hard for me to choose. I don't like fighting much nor do I even know how, but Ysgard sounds like too much fun.

I think that's the World Serpant Inn you're thinking of.

I'd personally want to go to Bytopia. Even though I'm way more chaotic than lawful, and more chaotic than good, Ysgard doesn't much appeal as an option for eternity. I'm more of a weekend warrior with regards to Ysgard. Why is it, though, that the dwarves, who are lawful, live in Ysgard, and the gnomes, who are chaotic, live in Bytopia, which is on the law side of Elysium?

Anyway, Bytopia... Well, the gnomes seem like pretty nice folks. You get a mix of wilderness and semi-urban landscape. You don't have to start of as an ugly little thing that's probably going to get eaten. There's books, because gnomes are quite bookish. There's art, because the gnomes are artistic. It has "Topia" in its name, which is a good thing, except in the case of dystopia, which is not the case here. If anyone on the planes is going to invent a computer, it'll be the gnomes. And probably the biggest thing is that I can live out my life's dream: I can get some friends together, go to mottlegrasp's orchard, and scrump some apples, and he'll be like, "Damn petitioners, get off my lawn!" and shake his walking stick at us, and I'll be like "Oh no, It's old man Mottlegrasp! Run!" You just can't do that anywhere else.

Elysium - Amoria. A nice place to visit and you get to do nice things for others every once in a while.

Would you choose death (no eternity, just worms) if it was an option?

The only reason I desire an afterlife is because it is the will of God. D&D planes=no Judeo-Christian God=no afterlife for me.

This decision would probably change if I had levels in a PC class (or Hero class, for d20 modern) instead of in Commoner (or Ordinary class, for d20 modern)

While Ysgard does seem really fun, If i have to choose a final resting place It'd be either Arborea or Bytopia. I'd probably be very, very happy in Celestia or Elysium, as I consider myself strongly good and mildly lawful (for some reason, Bytopia doesn't seem overly appealing). However when I think about it...

I've always had this highly romantic view of warrior life, but I'm not the warrior type. I'd like to go somewhere I could fight, not out of necessity, or a difference of views, but out a pure warrior's spirit. I've always loved the idea of Valhalla, so I think somewhere in Ysgard might actually suit me.

Assuming were all petitioners i'd say Arborea hands down with Alfheim (layer of ysgard) a close second. I would rather be a BGOC on Shendelavri or because of real life beliefs being a high ranking outsider in Aeaea might be cool.

Still being a petitioner sounds like hell. Your a near mindless being that retains very little of what you were in life and you don't remember anything of your former life so even if your lucky enough to have a loving family who all shared the same allignment none of you will really even know about each other.

Also are we assuming we are all basic level 1 commoner NPC types? Why arn't I a lamia or Illithid?

Clockwork Nirvana of Mechanicus.

I could set up my own cog and I could play D&D with the help of my least inevitable companion. You know the cute little one that jabs people with a fork for puting their elbows on the table or for fudging numbers.

Build a Library and a fortress hold. Build ellaborate traps forcing people to move like chess or die pieces only they don't know which pieces they are.

Then I could spend a few millenia trying to grasp the purpose of the plane.

From what I've read whether a petitioner remembers their life or not depends on what type of petitioner they are. I think the case was that those that become fiends generally don't, but a lot whom become celestials do. Then again, this was something I saw in a second edition Planescape book, so it might not apply in 3rd edition. Otherwise, well it might not seem like hell if you're a good petitioner, but there's something very evil about forcefully robbing someone of their memories and turning them into a creature that will serve you, I can't imagine that good aligned deities would do something so awful, not unless the person is willing anyhow (and that's another thing, if I remember right, petitioners had to be willing, but this was also something in second edition.)

Edit: According to the book Warriors of Heaven at least aasimon do retain memory of their past lives. They also can choose whether they want to stay the same type of celestial or advance. I haven't finished reading all the other entries, so I don't know about other celestials. Of course, not all petitioners become aasimon.

You are who you are now. Don't worry about translating yourself into D&D characters. The premise is not "you die as a D&D character, what's the 'coolest' afterlife you'd want him/her to go to?", the premise is "you die, and it turns out the D&D universe is real, so what do you want your eternal afterlife to be?". Which, incidentally, makes me wonder if the people who answered one of the lower planes or the Far Realm somehow misunderstood the question...

Not even.
And seeing the numbers of peoples that want to go in the lower planes, it smell advancement quick enough. :D
Through blood, violence, pain and cruelty the status will raise. How can there be a higher feel of satisfaction and reward ? Going near to death multiples times, engaging wars and literally evolving from a form to the other to gain the top after a while. And having some fun at the same time with mortals.
If you die, well, you begin again untill you makes no errors at all, got to reward patience. Time no more matter at this point, the eternity is there waiting for you.

Though, I agree, the first couple of centuries will be the hardest and most inimaginable literal hell to live in.

I prefer fighting for the rest of the eternity with real dangers and achivement than to fight and wake up the next day without a scratch as an happy world without problems. You must feel hell to give hell to others.

It really comes down to the significance of a life spent in leisure of a life spent with a goal in mind. If I were going to the nine hells, I would probably try to further their agenda as much as possible to prevent starting out as the lowest form of creature. Likewise with the Abyss or Carceri. Given that I'd have eternity to try to progress through the ranks of devil/demonkind, the rewards would probably pay off eventually. What are a few centuries of fear and torment for a few eons sitting on top of the fiend stack? I could even get my own layer to mold and shape at me own whim!

But if I HAD to start as the lowest form of creature, I'd go to Acheron, since you still retain some memories of your past life, and get to fight nonstop in hopeless, eternal battles. I could probably become a leader at some point though. It would be an interesting struggle for eternity against unsurmountable odds.

But yeah, as far as the Far Realm is concerned, I doubt mortal minds can contemplate what a petitioner would be like there! I assume they'd have tentacles.
