| Goat Face05-18-07, 01:16 AM | Lets say I have a fighter who is using a spiked chain against a foe that is standing 10' away and is weilding a "non-reach" weapon. Now lets say that my fighter decides to make a disarm attempt (without the benefit of the Improved Disarm feat) against this foe...Typically, this action (disarm) would trigger an AoO against the fighter. However, seeing as how the fighter is outside the foes threatened area, would he be safe from this AoO? I guess what im trying to ask is... Can AoO's be made against opponents who are not in threatend areas? |

Can AoO's be made against opponents who are not in threatend areas? You can only take an AoO a foe provokes if you threaten that foe. For example, you can't take an AoO if you are unarmed (normally). So in your situation the answer is that the enemy can't take an AoO back unless he's holding a reach weapon. |
| KillerGM05-18-07, 01:44 AM | No. He would only provoke AoOs from those opponents who threaten him. If he was within 5ft of an enemy using a bow, he could disarm and not provoke as well (as a bow does not threaten). |

Now if you want to be creative you could say that: If you fail on the disarm attempt, the defender may immediately react and attempt to disarm you with the same sort of opposed melee attack roll. His attempt does not provoke an attack of opportunity from you. If he fails his disarm attempt, you do not subsequently get a free disarm attempt against him. Would still work with a reach weapon, assuming your weapon was wrapped up with it or you grab it or something. I think this is even legal but it seems just a tiny bit fishy. It doesn't say this is an AoO, and it doesn't give any conditions about reach weapons in the rules. Give some enemies that otherwise don't have reach a two-handed weapon for the opposed roll. Or give fighter NPCs spiked gauntlets or armor, which can't be disarmed. |
