4 Arms and Split Psyche? [Archive] - Wizards Community

So two separate questions for you:

What would it cost/entail to have two extra functional arms grafted onto a character? Two of my players, the monk and the mystic theurge (cleric/wizard) both want two extra arms. The monk will be using them to gain extra attacks in battle, and the mystic theurge wants two extra arms so that she can split her psyche and basically have two minds and two pairs of arms - and can therefore cast two spells per round.

::blank stare::

How in the world do I rule on this? Are there rules somewhere out there for this, or are there some guidelines I can follow for it? The wizard has a Graft feat, and the players are willing to work with me on penalties and the like - I just need a little help on how to exactly go down this path without simply saying "No can do" because I don't know how to do it. Any help is awesome!

It isn't as much "no can do" as it is "this is not a good idea". Having access to more limbs (and Multiweapon fighting) and more actions warrants a hefty level adjustment.

There's no RAW to support this kind of solution, so you'd have to improvise. You could have the wizard qualify for this kind of "operation" by virtue of a Graft feat, but both the monk and the mystic theurge will have to take LA for this. Consider this like a sort of template. Here are my recommendations:

1) For 2 extra arms, impose a +1 LA. These arms enable the character to use multi-weapon fighting in lieu of two-weapon fighting. Monks gain no particular benefit from having more arms than any other creature would, so your player's monk will have to take up Multiweapon Fighting.

2) For an extra standard action every round, impose a +3 LA. Having an extra standard action every round is worth as much.

Note that these adjustments are cumulative. Again, keep in mind that this is all suggestion. What you want doesn't exist within the RAW.

So if the wizard already took the Graft feat, then she doesn't suffer the LA penalties for having two arms or for the extra standard action? I would force her to make sure she rollplayed the split personality aspect of her character, but as far as in-game balance, the feat should take care of that for her?

I spellcaster who splits her mind would, it seem to me, at best be able to cast spells at 1/2 caster level. The Intelligence modifier that is added to the DCs for her spells would also be halved, as only half the original intelligence is going into the casting of the spell.

Make sure you don't underplay the impact a split-personality would have on gameplay. Skills such as Diplomacy would take a serious hit if the character suddenly was mentally unstable. Not to mention the grafted arms...

This has nothing to do with it. The Graft feat will allow her to create the desired effects. Whether she has it or not doesn't change the fact that whomever gains the benefits of the extra arms/action will have a severe LA penalty, even if it's the grafter herself.
