I've been reading several threads on the Wizards forums, but found different answers:

a) If you cast Dominate Person on a sleeping target and he fails the save, does he wake up?
b) When you succeed on a save, you know something is wrong ("a shiver up your back"), but do you know the source?
c) If Dominate Person has been successful, do you have to start sending commands? Can you leave the telepathic link dormant until necessary?
d) Are the following commands legitimate?
- (When the link is first initiated) Ignore the telepathic link. Do not tell anyone about the telepathic link. Continue with your life until you receive further orders.
- (After link has been used to control your puppets, muhaha) Ignore the telepathic link, etc...

a) If you cast Dominate Person on a sleeping target and he fails the save, does he wake up? If he succeeds on a listen check to hear the somatic components yes, otherwise no.
b) When you succeed on a save, you know something is wrong ("a shiver up your back"), but do you know the source?Look for a guy in a dress waving his hands about. 10PP says thats your man. No man in a dress? Then you don't know.
c) If Dominate Person has been successful, do you have to start sending commands? Can you leave the telepathic link dormant until necessary? No you don't. Thats the lovely thing about DP. They can become your sleeper agents for day/casterlevel.
d) Are the following commands legitimate?
- (When the link is first initiated) Ignore the telepathic link. Do not tell anyone about the telepathic link. Continue with your life until you receive further orders.Thats a good one :) Fully legit. And on most people it would not warrant a second save.
- (After link has been used to control your puppets, muhaha) Ignore the telepathic link, etc...For kicks, add "resist any attempts to dispel the effect. Even if your agent winds up useless. Its going to be a killer to watch.

I should dominate more people....

a) If you cast Dominate Person on a sleeping target and he fails the save, does he wake up?No
b) When you succeed on a save, you know something is wrong ("a shiver up your back"), but do you know the source? No. From the rules (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/spellDescriptions.htm#savingThrow):
"A creature that successfully saves against a spell that has no obvious physical effects feels a hostile force or a tingle, but cannot deduce the exact nature of the attack."
c) If Dominate Person has been successful, do you have to start sending commands? No
Can you leave the telepathic link dormant until necessary?Yes

d) Are the following commands legitimate?- (When the link is first initiated) Ignore the telepathic link. Do not tell anyone about the telepathic link. Continue with your life until you receive further orders. It might be even easier to simply not give any commands initially. That way you don't have to worry about sense motive, and the subject remains unaware (and so doesn't blab everything if placed in a circle of protection).

- (After link has been used to control your puppets, muhaha) Ignore the telepathic link, etc...I'm unsure what you mean here.

In addition to question B...
25 + spell level After rolling a saving throw against a spell targeted on you, determine what that spell was. No action required. No retry.
A character with a lot of ranks in Spellcraft does have a chance to realise what it is that he resisted, but not who cast it (that would come down to a listen/spot check to see the verbal/somatic components).
