A smart halfling walks into the smithy's shop... [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-31-07, 09:11 PM and he wants to buy himself a shortsword. Does he buy:

a) a Medium dagger for 2 gp (1d4, 19-20/x2, 1 lb)
b) a Small shortsword for 10 gp (1d4, 19-20/x2, 1 lb)

Am I missing something here?

03-31-07, 09:14 PM The -4 to-hit penalty for wielding and inappropriately sized weapon perhaps? 8 gp is a small price to pay for an effective +4 to-hit.

You can argue with RAW all you want, but it will not change. Though your DM may make a custom rule.

It sucks but a small version of a weapon costs the same as a medium version.

In 3.0, it worked exactly the way he is talking about. There were no weapon sizes, Small characters just used bigger weapons as being one size catagory "larger". So a halfling would weild a longsword two handed like a greatsword, and couldn't use an actual greatsword at all.

04-01-07, 03:14 PM Right, now in 3.5, the halfling could wield the medium dagger one-handed (taking a -2 penalty). The SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/weapons.htm#weaponSize) has more information on it. The halfling could not wield the medium dagger as a light weapon, at all. Unless he had the Monkey Grip feat from Complete Warrior. With monkey grip, the halfling could wield the medium dagger as a light weapon taking the same -2 penalty.
