Elves need less sleep due to the mediation thing. Does this apply? They also have a ring of sustenance. Does this apply too? Would the ring grant an additional benefit to a normal elf? As in 4 hours > 1 hour, like it's normally 8 hours > 2 hours? |
| DMParadox11-12-07, 05:10 PM | The description of Alter Self in the PHB (pg 197) states: You do not gain any extraordinary special attacks or special qualities not noted above under physical qualities, such as darkvision, low-light vision, blindsense, blindsight, fast healing, regeneraton, scent, and so forth. You do not gain any supernatural special attacks, special qualities, or spell-like abilities of the new form. Your creature type and subtype (if any) remains the same regardless of your new form. 1) I'd put The 4 hour meditation instead of sleep under "special qualities" and/or "so forth". So, it wouldn't apply. 2) Elf is a subtype of Humanoid. The 4 hour meditation is an Elf trait. Since the player will retain their original subtype (not Elf) then it wouldn't apply. The Ring of Sustenance descriptions specifically says "sleep". Technically, the only benefit given to an Elf by such a Ring would be the nourishment. I could see an DM making a house rule for the ring being fully used by Elves. Specifically towards your question of "As in 4 hours > 1 hour, like it's normally 8 hours > 2 hours?" Simple answer: No. Reason: The ring description gives a specific time of 2 hours. Inferring a 75% reduction across the board is reading way too much into it. If it granted a %, then it would have been given, but it doesn't, it specifically says 2 hours. This is my opinion, anyone else want to weigh in? |
