| tos_shai_hulud01-29-08, 03:52 AM | Does choosing not to block a creature attempting an overrun provoke attacks of opportunity from other creatures within melee range? In the following example, X denotes the creature attempting an overrun, Y denotes other hostile creatures in combat (with weapons with reach), C denotes hostile creatures in combat (with weapons with reach, but P has partial cover due to proximity to X), and P denotes the player character (X is large so takes up four spaces), ".." denotes a 5' square, and "-" is a wall: YCXX.. Y..XXC Y..P..Y Y......Y Y----Y to YY...... Y......Y YPXXY Y..XXY Y----Y In this situation, P could theoretically have 5' adjusted to allow X to move by, which would not provoke attacks from every Y. Does overrun allow a 5' adjust to avoid blocking, or does that movement provoke attacks from every Y? |

Moving outside your turn, even 5', is never a 5' adjustment, and AoOs are provoked from every creature in a position marked Y. |

In step 2, "Opponent Avoids ?" it doesn't say anything about the avoider moving to a different square. The avoider stays put in his square but allows the overrunner to pass through it. The overrunner continues moving with whatever movement he has left, and still has his standard action since you let him past. According to the Online SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/movementPositionAndDistance.htm) entry on movement, the overrunner can't end his move in the same square as the avoider (because the avoider isn't helpless). So the avoider doesn't provoke an AoO through the act of avoiding the overrunner (because he doesn't leave a threatened square), but may have provoked and if he made his own AoO in step 1, provided someone who threatens the avoider has one of those feats that causes such attacks to provoke (or he used his AoO to make a kind of attack that provokes). Now, if the avoider was bullrushed (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/specialAttacks.htm#bullRush) into another square then the avoider would provoke by leaving a threatened square. |
