Bonus to Hide Checks? [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-15-07, 09:51 AM I am wondering if someone hiding gets a bonus to their hide check if they attempt to hide behind well concealing objects (bushes, desks etc.)? Or is that sort of thing necessary for hiding, and doesn't give any bonus?

09-15-07, 12:00 PM You only need cover or concealment to hide, and some things could easily grant a circumstance bonus. I know that heavy undergrowth grants a +5 bonus on hide checks according to the DMG.

Notice how I stated that you were hidden from sight; total concealment is something granted to you by virtue of opponents not being able to see you (which is the point of hiding). Total cover is something granted to you by virtue of your opponents not being able to strike you, which are two different things. For example, hidden behind a wall of force, you're granted total cover, but no concealment at all. Thus, you still need to hide.

Of course, if you're behind something big and opaque, you're benefiting from both total cover and total concealment.
