For example, let's say I have a human paladin in full plate with a 20 ft move speed. This is easy. The ring would increase his speed to 30 ft., and give him a +5 competence bonus to Jump. Since his speed doesn't go over 30, there is no bonus from extra movement. Now let's take a human barbarian with a 40 ft movement in light armor. She puts on the boots, and her movement gets bumped to 50 ft. She already had a +4 bonus from having a 40 ft move. So here's the question. Is her total bonus (minus ranks and strength) now +9 (+4 original from 40 ft move +5 for boot competence) or +13 (+8 for 20 ft over 30, and +5 from boots)? My guess is the latter, since the bonus from having a high speed is an unnamed bonus, and the bonus from the Boots is competence. It just seems odd that they'd neglect to mention this other bonus. Opinions? |

I think they don't mention it because jump modifiers from speed are covered by a separate rule. For instance in the example of the human paladin with speed 20 the boots would provide a net +11 to his jump. +5 outright and would also eliminate the -6 penalty from having a 20 speed. The item could remind you to check the rules for jump, but really, if every item/spell/feat/etc gave a reminder of relevant rules the books would be twice as long as they are. :D |
