Breath Weapon question [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-05-07, 10:21 AM A character in my Savage Tide campaign is going to go through the Dragonborn ritual described in Races of the Dragon. He's going to go for the Heart transformation which will give him a breath weapon. He already has a breath weapon as a 9th level Dragon Shaman. As far as I can tell, they each recharge separately and if he takes a feat that enhances a breath weapon, it applies to both. Is that correct?

The Metallic Dragon's racial Breath Weapon specifically states that both work on the same recharge. However, it seems to me that Breath Weapons gained from multiple different sources act independently of one another.

For example, a Dragonborn Dragonfire Adept shouldn't suddenly lose his DFA-granted ability to Breath as a standard action, with no recharge; at the same time, his racial Breath Weapon shouldn't lose its required recharge, simply because he's a DFA.

Each Breath Weapon should be treated individually according to its source.

04-08-07, 03:48 AM I agree with Kain on this one. Furthermore, I would recommend the dragon shaman opt to choose another draconic aspect that proves more synergistic than simply another breath weapon. At a certain point, one or the other will prove useless. Since the shaman gets draconic wings at a later point, taking the wings aspect can be a great choice if the player doesn't plan on sticking to the shaman class until the end. The same argument would apply to the heart aspect. However, the mind aspect is the one no other class or humanoid race can emulate.
