ok i have a question about cleave and great cleave

Cleave says out of players handbook 3.5 "If you deal a creature enough damage to make it drop (typically by dropping it to below 0 hit points or killing it), you get an immediate, extra melee attack against another creature within reach. You cannot take a 5-foot step before making this extra attack. The extra attack is with the same weapon and at the same bonus as the attack that dropped the previous creature. You can use this ability once per round."

Great cleave says out of players handbook 3.5 "This Feat works like Cleave, except that there is no limit to the number of times you can use it per round."

The question is, if the fighter is surrounded by say 4 creatures, and he has great cleave, and the creatures are of low level, enough that one hit kills them outright, does he get to great cleave them all on the first attack or does he only kill two and then the next attack, (by the way he gets 2 attacks per round), the other 2?

the way that they explain it in PH3.5 sounds like it could go either way.

please someone help.

thanks OM

As the rules say, "If you deal a creature enough damage to make it drop..."
It doesn't say it has to be with a normal melee attack.
It could also be after an attack of opportunity, IE. You have a reach weapon and are threatening 1 enemy. 2nd enemy charges you and provokes attack of opportunity, you hit and drop enemy 2 and can then cleave enemy 1.
This still counts against your cleaves per round, if you don't have great cleave.

Yep, if you drop 1 opponent and drop the next with your cleave attack you can keep going (if you have great cleave).

Or, to put Frugal's answer another way, your first attack continues until you fail to drop a creature. And if you are making a full attack and drop a creature on your second attack, then you get to Cleave from that one too.
