Just as a quick thought, where do you as a DM draw the line saying that a person cant be rezed due to the now horrible condition that the body is in? Because of decay how long do they have before the body cant function? If vital organs were hit in called shots would that affect them? (Huge gap in lungs, heart, ect).

Plz post comments, opinions, or even examples from your experience as a DM.

The condition of the body is not a factor for the Resurrection spell. The Raise Dead spell repairs mortal wounds, but the body must be otherwise 'whole'. Severe damage would not be a factor in either case.

That being said, what's a called shot? (That question being rhetorical)

Because of decay how long do they have before the body cant function? For raise dead it is 1 day/caster level. If vital organs were hit in called shots would that affect them? (Huge gap in lungs, heart, ect).Just don't use called shots. I'd say that unless the corpse was intentionally mutilated or snacked upon after death it is sufficiently intact for raise dead to work. Heck, even if someone died due to being in the wrong place when a vorpal sword went snicker-snack, I'd say raise dead works as long as you have both the head and the body.

I don't use called shots.
If the person dies from melee combat they are left whole enough for raise dead to work.
If they die from magic combat - excluding disentegrate or spells that completely eradicate the body - they are left whole enough for raise dead to work.

Pretty much the only time Raise Dead wouldn't work would be if the person in question was in an area that does constant damage - falling into lava, being eaten by a creature that survives the encounter, etc.

I don't try to list the limbs that may be hacked from a person as combat progresses. There is just no sense in essentially screwing the players out of the possibility of a Raise Dead.

i think that with raise dead, as long as the head is not removed from the body, and in all cases of the resurrection spell, the deceased char can always be revived. The exception being death by effects that, in the description, so much obliterate characters that they will not be revived (in which case, usually, they can recreate a character on 1 level lower, for instance) in ANY case except for a wish or miracle spell. These effects generally destroy souls or place them in the empty void between planes.
Resurrection actually restores the entire body, basicly even giving a new one to the soul of the departed. At the DMs discretion, one can edit time limitations to spells (like players dead by longer then clericlevel*xdays can not be revived other then by a wish/miracle spell, a temple visit or divine intervention, just to name an example)
