When attacking, and a critical hit is rolled, but the roll would not hit the target, is it a miss, or do you roll to confirm a crit? On a 20, it's a hit either way (if you are playing Nat20 = hit). However, w/ feats and some weapons, you can get a large crit range (14-20). Example. PC Bob needs to roll a 18 to hit BBEG. His weapon has a 14-20 crit range. He rolls a 17. This is in the crit range, but outside of the hit range. 99% sure it's a swing and a miss, but wanted to check. Thanks |

This is why large threat ranges aren't technically as good as large crit nubmers - you still have to be able to hit them on the lower threat numbers. |

Just confirming, what was the weapon and crit range extension here? This probably should be 15-20. |
| sblaxman04-17-08, 02:16 PM | Perhaps, the situation was hypothetical |
| Half_Dragon_Infernal04-17-08, 11:29 PM | It's actually impossible for a 14-20. Lets count the numbers: 14,15,16,17,18,19,20 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 numbers All effects that increase the crit range on a weapon double it. Maximum base crit range is 3. Odd numbers x 2 = Even numbers, which exclude 7. As far as I know, no effects known to men on earth, the solar system, milky way galaxy, local galaxy cluster, vergo supercluster that increase crit range stack anyways. |

There are effects out there that add an extra 1 to the crit range, such as Psionic Weapon Master. |
| Lilinthra04-18-08, 07:20 AM | Perhaps, the situation was hypothetical Fair enough. I figured that since you were using keen/improved critical/whatever in the example that it was from an actual player's weapon. |
| sblaxman04-18-08, 06:35 PM | Honestly I just wrote down a range, it wasn't a character or anything is specific, just a general situation. Thanks for the reply though, answered the question. |
| Half_Dragon_Infernal04-18-08, 07:25 PM | And the range you wrote down is possible with a keen scimitar wielded by a person manifesting psionic weapon. |
