Crystalline creatures [Archive] - Wizards Community

What are they?

Creatures made of crystal or glass. This is not a subtype or special quality; it it left to the DM's judgement.

05-12-07, 07:33 PM The only ones I can think of in the MM would be an Animated Object make of glass, such as a mirror are, well, a large crystal :D

That spell description has, on multiple occaisons, made me want to homebrew a whole mess of crystalline creatures, though.

05-14-07, 03:53 AM The Nerra (mirrormen outsiders) from the Fiend Folio are specifically described as being crystalline and hurt by the spell shatter.

Other than that, I guess the Crytalline Troll would qualify. A lot of golems are crystalline or glass-like, but since they're immune to spells, they don't really count. There must be other crystal-like monsters out there, but I just can't rememeber any at the moment.

05-14-07, 10:59 AM One of the worst D&D creatures of all time, the Carbunkle, had a crystalline component. Basically, this was an armadillo with a valuable gem in its forehead, that people would chase after to get the gem.

There are some groovy crystalline creatures in the Tome of Horrors by Necromancer games, and some of those creatures made an appearance in the adventure "Hall of the Rainbow Mage"

05-16-07, 01:06 PM And lets not forget the third catagory of dragons. You've got chromatics, metallics, and the gemstone dragons (the psionic dragons).

It's not like bronze dragons have kidneys, bones and the like made of actual bronze.

05-18-07, 07:42 AM Any golem contruct or other entity composed moastly of stone, metal or crystal / glass will be crystaline. As cooling metals and magmas solidify into regular aragments of atoms. Often though these crystals are too small to see, but if you look closely at a pice of granate you'll beable to pick out a jumble of crystals, mostly quartz, olivine and feldspar, some several mm in lenght.

So Iron and Stone Golems, Earth elementals and so on should be vulnerable.

05-18-07, 08:02 AM That depends on a specific and rather technical definition of a crystal that I doubt the designers had in mind when they wrote the spell.
Also, golems and spell immunity.
